Hey fellas, I wanted to get a thread started for the USF med class of 2006. Since it appears there's a few of us around on this message board, like CANES and Lukeweigand, I thought it'd be cool to post here if we have any questions on financial aid, housing, pre-matricultion program, etc.... or just to rag on UF/UM/FSU ( F orever the S chool U naccredited). Just kiddin BIOTN

I thought I'd just mention that I think USF is a damn good school and am really happy to be going there. I guess everyone has there own reasons for picking a particular school over another. IMO USF has the best attributes of UF and Miami mixed together. Academics and especially clinicals are excellent.

So all you floridians speak up and post

I would just like to point out that I had the honor of snubbing UF. :D I also agree that USF is a great school. And if the school were closer to my home, I'd probably go there. However, staying with my family is a big issue for me. Consequently, if UMiami gives me the green light, I'll go there even though it costs more and I liked it less.

Would you mind if I ask you what your stats were when you applied to USF? I am considering this my DREAM school... as it is close to home, and like others, this is a big issue for me. Where did you do your undergrad, and what your ECs and MCAT? GPA is pretty much a given (in that it has to be competetive like at least a 3.65 or so). So please let me know what yout think was the biggest factor in getting you accepted at USF. Thanks a bunch!!!

Why don't you call up USF and ask to consult with the dean? If you are closeby, you may even get to meet with him in person. After my pre-interview rejection, I called up and spoke to him and got really good feedback about what they want. He told me to be competitive there, you really need a 3.7, 10s, and a VERY early application. To be considered, however, all you need is a 3.3 and a 24. Somewhere in the middle could also get you in. I think if you meet with him now, right when the application cycle is about to start, it will greatly benefit your chances, since they could get to know you. If you can't find the number online, please send me a private message and I'll look for the number for you.

And welcome to SDN btw! :D

Hello fellow Bulls,

I'm definite on attending USF this fall. I think I'll be going up there next week or the week after to apartment hunt.

Simpleton, I also agree that USF is an excellent school. I really think the clinical exposure there will be really strong there. I'm looking forward to getting out of Gainesville and living in Tampa. The down-to-earth, non-competive student body there was also a trait I really like about the school.

Can't wait to meet all you fellow Bulls there!

-2NT

hey 2NT, did you withdraw from Finch yet so I could get your spot? :p :D

Let me be the first USF student to say Welcome. I hope you all enjoy it here as much as I have enjoyed my first year so far. If any of you have any questions, hopefully I can be of help. About the white coat, last year they sent us a slip that we had to send back with our chest size in inches. Not sure what they told you guys but that is how we did it. Lastly enjoy whatever summer you are going to have because it will be rough when you get here in the fall.

Luke,
About the white coat ceremony, I just e-mailed Phyllis (her e-mail is on the paper asking for coat size) and told her I could not head up to Tampa before May 1 to just try out some coats. She told me not to worry about it because they will have a table during orientation in which you could try on lab coats. They could get your size there. She was very friendly. But, that's not a big surprise, since everyone at Tampa is so sweet. These people do not know the concept of being rude ( weird for me since I was born and raised in Miami). Hey usfgator, why do you say that it is going to be rough when we get there? Are you saying that because it's just medical school in general or specifically USF? What has been the hardest thing about your USF experience thus far?
Cane

Yes it was meant as more of a general comment, but for us it was very bad because they cut out three weeks of our gross anatamy time and replaced it with the profession of medicine class. Because of this we had to cover the same amount of material for the first exam in a shorter period of time. Fifty percent of the class failed the first exam and this caused a harder transition for most of the class. However, do not worry, changes will be made for your class. The hardest thing all together probably was getting used to going to class from 8-5 last semester and then having to go home and continue studying or you will fall behind. Also I had to get used to actually studying my ass off in advance and still feeling like I knew nothing. In undergrad I would study a day or two before the exam and do fine. Those days are clearly over. These are common feelings for first years and they just take time to get used to.

Hey,
any of you bulls interested in the pre matric summer program? or are you going to chill for the entire summer?

Sairules, he goes to undergrad w/ you...what are the chances. Just to one of the forums that usf is expected to attend and get all you information straight from the horse...or bull to make it more accurate...

So far it seems like alot of guys accepted...any women for simpleton going to attend?

Blame,
In case you didn't comprehend after our various PMs, I am a woman who is going to attend USF as of right now. Geez! If you didn't know that I was a woman after all of those sessions of flirting, what were you thinking? I must admit I am a little disappointed in you, Blame. I guess all of the men at USF are going to have to help mend my broken heart.
Cane

cane,
i was imply that none of the usf girl had not posted on this thread....

I thought you were a woman..not a girl...but after that viscious attack  ...i dont know.

All women out there...simpleton is elligible bachelor....and he loves the smart women. So cane, does that count you out? J/K :D
Go get em girls

I would recommend the prematric program to anyone that wants a head start. All the prematrics were ahead of the game for the first two tests in anatamy. This gave them a great deal of confidence that the rest of the class lacked. Can you do well without being a prematric? Sure, however you will most likely do better in the beginnng if you do take it. I did not take it and ended up doing fine. At that time I valued relaxing over the summer. So it all depends on what you want. Relaxation over the summer and increased stress when you start school or no summer and an easier transition into medical school.

Canes- I could definitely help with that broken heart, how about a nice candlelight dinner or maybe we could go out for sushi sometime, heard its a good aphrodisiac - just kididng  sounds like will be classmates at usf though and we could end up being study buddies. don't worry about BIOTN he will be too far away to interfere.

I'm hoping to be admitted into the pre-matric program and am going to tampa to look for a place to stay. I noticed there are quite a few houses for rent. anyone else consider renting a house or looking for a roommate. I would like to avoid living in another apartment.

Good-luck to all those going to usf or waiting to move off the waitlist. keep us informed.

Me too Foxy! Poo on ALL FL schools! ) Congrats to those of you who got in them though!

And USF Bulls?! ROFL...lemme check what Rochester is before I get to amused...lol...watch us be like the Grasshoppers or something!

Bulls have nothing on Rochester. We seem to be the mighty and powerful YELLOWJACKETS?!Esqueeze me?? Mmk.

Simpleton, aren't you romantic? It seems like you know how to treat a woman. I'm thinking of applying to the pre-matriculation program. If I mail it out on Friday, do you think it will be too late for me to have a chance at being admitted? I'm graduating on May 10, and I'll be going to Tampa the following week to look for apartments. Do you know which area are many apartments available? It seems like you have already investigated the availability of housing. Do you know what is the average price range of a modest apartment? Who knows? Maybe we will be study partners at USF like you said. If you get accepted to the pre-matriculation program let me know. Do you know when they will decide who gets admitted to the program?
Cane

co-cane (sorry could't resist:), i like the idea of us being study partners at usf especially if the pre-matric program works out. not too good of a solo studier myself although studying w/ the opposite sex can at times not be productive (it's more reproductive) :D i sent you a PM w/ the phone number to the pre-matric office. you should be in good shape, i remember mr. larkin saying that everyone who applies gets in and last year someone said the class wasn't filled. the only bit of researching i've done towards housing was looking at the tama tribune classified ads CLICK HERE FOR WEBSITE i was interested in houses just because i'm tired of living in a noisey apartment. i probably will have to settle for an apartment unless i can find someone else interested. i believe a moderate two bedroom apartment in tampa goes for about $650-$750. also, i heard it's not hard to get an apartment at the last minute. well please keep myself and BIOTN posted -Simple

Guys and Gals, correct the prematric program was not filled last year. You can get an apartment in tampa at the last minute, however that is probably not recommended. If you live right around the school, which is not the greatest area, the cost of a two bedroom unfurnished apartment is not that expensive. This area is high crime and most of the apartments are old and crappy. However if you go north of campus to tampa palms (five minutes away), the prices of an apartment sky rocket up. It is a very nice area that is affordable if you have a roomate. That is where most of the first years live and where I would recommend.

Simpleton,
Don't be ragging on my name because I could use some of the names that Blame has come up with. So, are you gonna look into Tampa Palms or elsewhere? Do you know if they have shortened that Profession of Medicine course that was held in the first three weeks of classes? Keep me posted on any new developments and PM me whenever you want to talk. Later.
Cane

Hey, Simpleton, I forgot to ask you. Why did you remove your picture from your profile? Although I couldn't see you perfectly, you looked cute. Sorry, Blame, but you haven't sent me your photo yet, so I can't say who is the cuter one between the two.
Cane

Damnitt Cane, stop stealing my men already!

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful. Seriously, since when was Simpleton your man? I've never witnessed any exchange between the two of you. Then again, maybe I haven't seen it.
Cane

Bumping this up to let all you guys know that I will definitely be a USF Bull this fall. :D I have decided to go to USF over UM. Hope to meet all of you in the fall or in the summer if you choose to go to the pre-matriculation program.
Later,
Cane

what? Cane, did u give up on waiting for miami? Tell us why!

But congrats on making a decision!

Thanks Michelle. :D I posted my decision and my reasons on the Miami thread. I'm sorry I didn't say it here, but I am too lazy.
Cane

glad to hear canes will be @ usf. don't think magellan and the other waitlisted peeps will think the same... any news on the pre-matric.

i will fill you in soon on that guy i mentioned in the pm. back to work for me

Wow, living in Tampa would be great. I'll be freezing my arse off in New England or in the Midwest. I really need to place a priority on location when applying for residency. Have fun at USF!!!!

I am not quite sure how many of you are aware of the curriculum for next year, so I thought I would let you know what I found out today. Block A will again start off with the profession of medicine lasting most likely three weeks. Originally I thought they were going to shorten it, but they made other changes to compensate for it. Once this is over you will have your white coat ceramony. End of Block A. Block B will consist of molecular/Cell biology and Genetics, ethics and humanities, and pieces of histology. Block B will end around Nov when Block C will start. This block will consist of Gross Anatomy, Physiology, LCE (physical diagnosis), and Biochemistry . End of block C around march or april. Block D will consist of Neuroscience, LCE, and behavioral medicine. I am not too sure where embryology will fit in. Either is block B or C. We had it together with Anatomy. I do not think any of this is set in stone so it could change. This is a drastic difference from what we had. I can tell you this much, it will definately let you have a smoother transition into medical school. You also will have more time to learn anatomy which I wish we had. Also your classes should be organized so each system is studied at the same time. The concept seems to encompass medicine on a cellular level followed by the body and mind.

Thanks bobcat. Yeah, the weather in Tampa will be great. I can't see myself studying in cold weather. I get too sleepy. This is why I only applied to Florida schools. But, in residency, I will leave the state of Florida. Maybe we can switch areas of living in 4 years.
Cane

wow that curriculum sounds too easy. i was hoping for more of a challenge, i do want to past the boards and don't want usf in the same boat as uf. i am just kidding, the curriculum sounds tough and i'm sure there will be many sleepless nights. several people have said that of the florida schools usf has the most rigorous curriculum and miami is the most laid back by far. wonder how they get away with all the south beach excursions and all the other miami vices (no pun intended) heard a little bit about the catastrophe with the first anatomy test at usf, i think the only ones who weren't complaining were pre-matric kids who had a little head start. usfgator-do you know the curriculum for the summer? thanks for the update- simple

Thanks usfgator for the info. Forgive me if this is stupid, but what is LCE?
Cane

LCE means longitudinal clinical experience. In this program you will meet with a physician once a week where you will be provided a focused clinical orientation and introductory physical diagnosis skills in the first several months of Year I. This really is a great program because it really keeps you going through out the semester. Just when you are sick and tired of studying and sitting in lecuture all day, LCE makes you realize why all that information is relevant. In the beginning you mostly shadow with your role expanding through out the year to acutally doing things completely on your own. What I did not include in the previous schedule was physical diagnosis. I meant for it to be included with LCE because the two may go together. However, if not, include physical diagnosis for block C.

sorry i forgot to mention about the prematric program. I was not in the program but I can tell you what I was told how they did it last year. Last year they had lectures in biochemistry, histology, and gross anatomy. In anatomy they dissected everything below the neck. There were tests (practical and written) but they did not count officially on your record. All along they are supposed to track and monitor your progress to try and work on your weaknesses. All the students who did take the course were very pleased. Obviously the course load is less compared to when the fall starts so you should be able to still have some free time to enjoy the good things in life.

dr. canes, have you heard from usf about your financial aid package yet? no word back for me, i know the deadline was april 15. i'm beging to get ant-z, just hoping to get a little relief by the way of institutional grants but not going to get my hopes up b/c i hear none loan money is few and far betweed especially at state schools. has anyone received a financial aid package from any of the florida school? would be interesting to compare. blame - full ride at fsu??

•••quote:•••Originally posted by simpleton:
• blame - full ride at fsu??•••••This is what blame told me. He said that they wanted to help him out with some grants and stuff, but they couldn't. Money is tight up in Nole country this time of year, but they did make sure they offered him the next best thing (He was one of their most sought after students after all). That's right, they hooked him up with a high-paying job in the work-study program. Yep, Blame's new job is the official cowtipper of the FSU College of Medicine. Class of 2006 representin' baby! :p

PS: Cane, we would've had so much fun together at UM girl!

Simpleton,
Dr. Canes? I could definitely get used to the sound of that. No, I haven't received my financial aid package. But, I'm not surprised. I did, after all, turn in the verification form over the weekend. I'm not expecting any grants because I never get anything. Just loans. Post here or PM me if you hear anything. :)

Papi, you are such a cutie. You are really placing doubts into my head about my decision in attending USF. But, I guess that was always part of your master plan: making me fall in love with you.
Cane

Cane, I'm gonna send you a PM later today about your decision. I would do it now, but I got class. Later.

I'll be waiting anxiously by my computer, Papi.

Just want to post to say congrats to a fellow knight that just got into FSU. Looks like Magellan has found a harbor for his boat somewhere outside of FSU, well unless he gets a call from Mr. Larkin SOON. Now it looks like BLAME and Magellan will be tomahawk choppin their way through school together! Although I'm still not doubting BIOTN's chances at UM. Good-work guys!

Papa,
So if i am the full time cow-tipper at FSU..

then i guess your going to be the ammunition and bullet proof vest supply guy at UM? :)

Hope we end up down there...

They did not give me much simpleton...no full ride...i could only wish...after all i am not a stellar student and i am a male caucasian

I wonder how long the commute is between FSU and the gulf. Hope he can still keep up his grades with work and all. I thought Poppy's job was going to be picking up the dropped cocaine shipment from the columbian drug ring.

Hats off to Magellan---
Ships Ahoy matey,

Simpleton...FSU has the tomohawk, and UF has the Gator chomp, and UM has the simple #1 sign...what is usf's action sign...do your arms turn into horns or something...?

Good luck w/ usf magellan...do you care which school you go to...are you excited about FSU? i dont want a commie up in Tally

Hi guys,

Sincere congrats to all of you going to USF :) :p

It is also my first choice; I' ll be applying there after taking the August's mcat. What mcat score would you match with my 3.7 gpa? Would you mind posting stats? Thanks a lot.

Thanks Barbara!!

I'll go first....
