I go to NDSU (North Dakota State University) and am in the program. Today, our assistant dean announced to the class that the faculty decided that they want everyone to wear their name tags in class everyday (includes P1-P3). The reasoning for this is because it will help everyone get to know each other better and help out the professors with names.

I am not a P1 and there is a clear viewpoint by the students that this is a joke. Furthermore, I am not sure that they consulted with the students on this decision. With that being said, I would like to hear if you guys think I am overreacting and would like to know if you guys have to wear name tags to class or ever heard of such a thing? The majority of students instantly reacted and said they are flat out not going to wear their name tag.

they are just starting to enforce it here

they started it last year so by this point its not a big deal

my guess (we were recently reaccredited) is that it has something to do with professionalism standards or something

First year I understand it.

We have to do it several times, for example in our public speaking groups. Also, in orientation etc.

But third year might be a bit awkward, depending on class size. Our class is 40 students, so not really needed.

For other than first month or two P1s I think its stupid, but not something to work yourself up about. If you want to make it fun try swapping around tags with other people and see how long it takes for them to catch on, or stick your tag somewhere dumb, like on your back or your butt.

I guess it is also to help us get ready for the work environment. I think it has something to do with JCAHO. Hospitals (or atleast the ones where I have worked at) are really strict about having your name always visible. One hospital of mine wouldn't even allow us to park our cars or pay for lunch without our name badges. My pharmacy school isn't so strict right now (I'm a P1) but I imagine that it will get stricter when we go on rotations.

We are required to have our ID badges displayed at all time. I guess thats pretty much the same thing as having a name tag, only it has a picture added.

I think the rule at our school is two fold. One so that we can learn each others names better and two for safety reasons so that random people can't be walking the halls if they are not student/faculty etc.

We have to wear name tags for lab, but not for regular class, yet...
However, with the new dress code they're trying to push through, it's only a matter of time.

We have to wear lab coats and name tags in our classes where we are "pretend pharmacists". I wasn't required to wear one 1st or 2nd year, except when I was on a practicum rotation. Now it's 4 days a week. When I'm on rotations next semester, it will be every day.

Honestly, yes, I think you're overreacting. I don't understand what the big deal is.

When I first started pharm school we had to write our names on paper tents and set them on our desks....I did the same thing in elementary school!

Gosh, we didnt' have to do that!

Yeah, they'd like us to wear our ID badges all the time, but it's not enforced (at least not yet). We need to wear them during our professional lab courses and during rotations, and some teachers want you to have them during exams.

we don't need to here

we have to wear our name tags whenever we are in the pharmacy building or in the hospital because last summer, so one got into the school and stole a bunch of equipment. Now we have to wear it and if we don't wear it to lab, I've heard we get sent out of class and get a zero for the assignments that day

Its only a name tag. You will wear one the rest of your life.

We have to wear our ID badges in lab, during tests, in the library, and in the computer lab.

Welcome to the yoke.

In many states it is law. In some high security installations you need your badge/nametag to go to the freaking bathroom. My department of defense position requires both an ID card and a name badge. Forget one or the other and you cannot even go to work!

We just got an email that they are trying to figure out a way to keep up with fingerprinting and background checks on all students going on rotations!

This is the tradeoff for wearing jeans. 😉

True, very true. Though I must say that I feel VERY secure knowing that I am surrounded by hundreds of sexually frustrated underpaid eighteen year olds toting ugly black automatic weapons 😱

Seeing one of these with a student driver sign on the front will give you that warm and fuzzy feeling too

MWU CCP requires that ID badges be worn by students on a daily basis, showing security officers when we enter the library, and must be shown to professor/proctors when turning in your exams/quizzes. i didn't like it at first, but i've gotten over it. however, it's not enforced strictly yet...they want us to wear it around our necks or attach it to our clothes, but a lot of people just keep it in the bookbag and pull it out when necessary.

it's true, you're going to have to wear one for the rest of your life...
