Amalgam or Tooth colored (composites) feelings!!!

Hi Guys,
I recently had two small cavaties found on my teeth and doctor was saying that I have option between amalgam or tooth colored feelings-composites. So was wondering that which one is better?? And why??? Are they both the same?? I am also going to ask my dentist but I forgot to ask him when he told me about this. I know all of you dental students know about this so please reply. Thanks!!

DaktarSaheb, which teeth need to be filled? If the decayed areas are truly small, I would probably lean toward a composite... especially if they are toward the front of your mouth or are visible when you smile.
However, one material isn't necessarily "better" than another - each has it's advantages and its drawbacks. Discuss it with your dentist, and you can come to a decision together about which is best in your case.

It all depends. If the caries are in anterior teeth, or if the restoration will be otherwise highly visible, the dentist will probably suggest a resin. If it's an occlusal restoration, he might not have any preference.

Amalgam tends to be stronger and cheaper, but it's obviously not very aesthetic. A well-placed composite is usually adequate to most tasks, though; but leakage can be a concern if it's not done right.

Bottom line, it's really up to you. Worst case, if you get one and decide you absolutely can't stand it, the dentist can replace the restoration with the other material.
