AMCAS GPA calculation

anyone else went to a school that used the same system as the AMCAS 4.0, 3.7, 3.3, 3.0 etc. no editing of transcripts b/c of repeated grades, and actually had their scores change when AMCAS recalculated things ? I'm really curious why people's GPA's go down based on AMCAS recalculation... what are some of the other reasons why GPA's go down? School awarded 4.3, you can repeat classes and have them replaced, what else? Also do P/F courses count to your GPA if you failed one ?

If you took college classes in high school, and only got credit on your transcript. Those grades are now factored into your AMCAS GPA.

Here is what happened to me my cum. GPA went down and my science GPA went up. The reason is that the people at AMCAS decided to make all my 4 credit classes with lab worth 5 credits and my 4 credit humanities classes worth 3.3 credits. So want ended up happening is all my A's in humanities classes counted for less so the couple of B's I had in philsophy and classics classes had more of an effect. Alternatively they counter tutorials without labs as 5 credits and thus my science GPA got jacked up because of their odd way of doing things. So I think much of the change has to do with how much credit they award for each class you take.

Schools in the University of California system use that system of grading. A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, etc.

As far as I know P/F courses do not count, nor do S/NS courses. Note, at least the schools I went to in CA, repeating a course does not REMOVE the course from your transcript and replace it with the most recent one. Its still there, but the most recent grade is used for your SCHOOL'S GPA calculation. However AMCAS will count BOTH scores in their GPA calculation.

Then there's DO schools which take the better of the two.

The school I got my BS from gave number grades: 4.0, 3.9, 3.8, etc.
AMCAS rounds 3.9s and 3.8s down to 3.7.
3.6s get rounded down to 3.5.
3.4s get rounded down to a 3.3.
3.2s get rounded up to a 3.3
3.1s get rounded down to a 3.0
AMCAS rarely rounds up, almost always down. Plus, our grades topped out at a 4.0, we had no A+ to achieve. (This last part has nothing to do with AMCAS, it's just me whining.)

if your school has the same grading system (4.0and 3.9 and so on) why would they round down? 😱

My school gives A's=4.0, B's=3.0, C's=2.0 etc, so when I go to type in my grades for amcas, how else could they calculate my gpa other than 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 etc?

I mean they could assign different credit hour amounts I suppose but other than that my gpa wont change right?

That shouldn't be a problem, since if there is no differentiation between +'s and -'s then that is the same system used by AMCAS (A = 4.0). Other schools, like those described above make things more complicated where they add/subtract a fraction from these values to discern between +/- scores.

I was looking over the AMCAS app for last year and had a little trouble picking out which system my school had... a school year at my school was sep-dec a semester, jan-apr another semester, and may-aug another (optional) semester... so is this the tri-semester system or two semesters with a summer session ?
