Hey Everybody,

Would anyone mind explaining what differences exist between AMCAS and TMDSAS? I am considering re-applying next cycle and have close ties to TX. Will the TMDSAS application require a lengthy time investment or is it pretty similar to AMCAS?

Thanks!

They are pretty similar. TMDSAS activity descriptions are shorter and its main essay (why medicine) is a bit shorter as well. TMDSAS also has an optional additional essay (kind of a diversity essay). But overall it's the same stuff in both.

Also, consider that for a relatively small flat fee you will be applying to 8 schools, some of which don't have secondaries (UTH, UTMB, UTHSCSA) or have a free one (UTSW).
If you have ties to TX, there is no reason not to apply to TMDSAS schools, unless you totally hate TX or something 🙂

Thanks, Amygdarya! Wish I had applied via TMDSAS the first time around!

if you're out of state is it even worth bothering using TMDSAS?

Probably not if you don't have strong ties to TX and/or extremely impressive stats. IIRC, at least 90% of the student body at TX schools must be TX residents.

Good to know. thanks. I remember trying to figure out what exactly TMDSAS was when I was looking at the AMCAS app and msar stats and w.e.

If you have decent stats and don't mind doing a couple extra essays, you minus well go for it since it's cheap to apply. Plus, if you are lucky enough to be admitted, the schools are cheap as well. Another difference that hasn't been mentioned yet is TMDSAS doesn't consider +/- with grades.
