Hey all,

I'm just wondering how much of a disavantage I will be at if i don't take anatomy before med school? Do most 1st year med students have anatomy under their belts before they start? I heard that if you havn't done an in depth anatomy course prior to first year gross anatomy I will find it extremely hard with the already heavy course load.

I haven't anatomy either, and so I bought this Anatomy Coloring Book by Kapit. One of my friends said it's a great way to become familiar with anatomy and the most common terms without having to read some dry, boring book. I've seen people on SDN mention this book as well. Plus, it's sorta fun coloring 😛

If you search old threads, you'll see that people who haven't taken anatomy can still do well though.

I love the coloring book! When I took anatomy, we only colored a limited selection but I liked it enough that I colored many pages on my own.

My opinion on the class is that it would be very helpful. 'Course, I'm not in med school yet, but there's just SO MUCH memorization to do, every exposure would help. And, it'd be great basic knowledge to have for the MCAT. In fact, since it's been many years since I had gross anatomy, I'm going to do the prematriculation program just because we're gonna study the musculoskeletal system. I remember the names of the big stuff, but when it comes to insertions, foramina, and the like, I don't remember bupkis.

Hey there,
I had no anatomy (Chemistry major) and I did extremely well in Gross Anatomy (I am a surgery resident). If you get accepted into medical school, you will be able to make it through all of the first year classes. There is plenty of study time built into your schedule. Don't go to lab unprepared. Do your reading, review your dissector so you know where to expect to find things and be prepared to spend time outside of class and lab practicing and identifying structures. Gross Anatomy is fun and very interesting. On a regular basis, find two or three classmates and schedule an body-side review session with one of the instructors. Ask this person to be brutal with you. You will find that stuff starts to click and that you actually enjoy these sessions though they can be humbling at first. Be prepared to work your rear-end off but in the end, you will be fine.

I had no anatomy before med school and also did fine.

Make sure you review other cadavers in the lab before exams. Knowing which cadaver has an awesome disection of the maxillary artery branches or pundenal nerve will help you greatly on the practical exams. Every body is different and it really helps to identify the structures you need to know on several cadavers.

You will get plenty of A&P in med school

Most people didn't have anatomy.

The people who did take it said it didn't help much, except for the terminology.

just as a followup question to those of you already in med school, what classes do you think WOULD be helpful to take in undergrad, I have a few upper div science courses I need to take and I wanted to maybe take a few that would be helpful for med school, any suggestions or classes you wish you would have taken?

Human Physiology or Histology

In my research on schools over the past several years I have found that most prefer if an applicant does not have anatomy. The reasoning is that each school has its own method for teaching A&P and they don't want a student to have a fresh slate coming into M1. However, there is an obvious advantage to anyone who has taken a course twice - no matter the subject. The anatomy coloring books are great and are a relaxed, stress-free way to get familiar with many of the terms used in Gross Anatomy. Coloring is such a stress-reliever as well!

The most helpful classes for the MCAT and for success in first year are the upper-level bio courses such as Human Physiology, Histology, Genetics, Immunolgy, etc. But don't worry too much. You have to realize that there are many students who succeed in med school with only the science pre-reqs. I'm sure you'll do well whether or not you have previous experience in Anatomy or any other med-school course.

Science classes? Psych helps a little, neuro helps a little. Art classes (to help you visualize things) help a little.

Public speaking and writing will help a lot. 👍
