Bump for a fellow classmate and identical interest.

Step 1 230, also considering Mass Gen as my "reach" program since I did a summer research fellowship with a group that moved to FSU from there. I'm wondering what weight that has, if any, or if I should stick to mid-tier programs. The program directors survey had research ranked disappointingly low...

Apply to any and all programs you're interested in. Not much to lose by ticking the box on NRMP.
Do your best to rock Step 2 and Honor clerkships.
Research not necessary.

I agree, research not necessary. I doubt your Step 1 score is a huge red flag for most of the 2nd/3rd tier programs in the Boston area. Just keep the rest of your application clean and you should be okay to at least get interviews.

take step 2 early...230 or higher and youre in good shape...you'll get interviewed by most of the NYC programs based on the stats thrown around for this past year. Where you end up is all on you and the interview.
