Bhuiya - Dr. Tawfiqul age 63 Professor and Vice Chair of Anatomic Pathology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, succumbed to COVID-19 on Sunday, December 13, 2020 after a 4-week illness. Dr. Bhuiya was a towering figure at Northwell Health. He received his MBBS from the Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1980, and after a Rotatory Internship at the same institution, arrived in July 1983 at Long Island Jewish Medical Center as Resident and Chief Resident in Pathology (1983-1988), then as Fellow in Surgical Pathology and Hematology (1988-1992). After an obligate two years as Junior Consultant Pathologist at Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1992-1994), Dr. Bhuiya came back to Northwell to stay (1994-2020). He first was Assistant Professor and Attending Pathologist and then starting in 2003, Associate Professor and Vice Chairman, Department of Pathology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In the latter capacity, he oversaw the growth of Anatomic Pathology Services at Northwell to become one of the major such academic programs in the country. In 2015 he was promoted to the rank of Professor of Pathology in the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.Dr. Bhuiya had impact on every aspect of Pathology across Northwell Health. The central Anatomic Pathology Services unit he directed was a direct provider of subspecialty pathology services to the Northwell Central Region, and provided real-time support to Pathology in the rest of the health system through real-time subspecialty consultation. Dr. Bhuiya himself was an outstanding diagnostic pathologist, specializing in Breast Pathology but with excellence across the breadth of Anatomic Pathology. He was a physician, scholar and educator of the first order. Countless colleagues across the health system and beyond depended on him for care of their patients. He chaired the major health system committees for Quality in Pathology Services, and was member of the Northwell Interdisciplinary Breast Cancer Committee since its inception in 2009. He was member of the national Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology (ADASP), Past-President of the New York Chapter of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMANA), and Past-Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee of the Nassau County Society of Pathologists. First and foremost, he was a friend, mentor, and colleague. His gracious spirit, indefatigable optimism, and caring touched all who had the privilege of working with him. Dr. Bhuiya is survived by his wife, Dr. Naeema Bhuiya, and by his son Tanzim Bhuiya and daughter Sabreen Bhuiya, both of whom are following in their father's footsteps, attending medical school at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
