I realize that these have been posted a ton recently but I would really love some advice. I am having a hard time coming up with my rank list. To start things off, I will be a new father beginning residency so categorical programs appeal more to me than advanced. I am a DO student with steps >255. Here are the programs I have interviewed at.

University of Arkansas
University of Arizona
Maricopa (community program in Phoenix)
University of Iowa
University of New Mexico
University of Illinois in Peoria
University of Kansas Kansas City
University of Kansas Wichita
University of Nebraska
Providence Sacred Heart (community in Spokane, WA)
University of Missouri Kansas City

As of now my top 5 in no particular order are:

University of Arizona
University of Iowa
University of Nebraska
University of Illinois in Peoria
Providence Sacred Heart

Providence Sacred Heart is closest to family (7 hour drive) and I really enjoyed the program but it is so small (2 residents per class) with no overnight call and is a community program with level 2 trauma. Outside of that I enjoyed all the programs but have no geographical ties. Would I be crazy to put this community program above my others? Sorry for this long post, I'm just at a loss and looking for words of wisdom.

Honestly if "close" is still 7 hours from family I think I would try to go for a bigger program with better training/pathology.

Potential job: I’ve never heard of your residency, tell me about your experience.
Future you: It was great, nice hospital friendly people. Level 2 trauma and never worked a night.
Potential job: *** dial tone***

If it’s for you, then more power to you. But I would think about having to fight later for a decent job just because you wanted to live easier early. Hard residencies with volume and demand for work build good radiologists.

Easy to say from here because I had no obligations to anyone. You may have to succumb to the “happy wife, happy life” scenario.

Strongest name program is Iowa. I know people at the KC programs and they seem like good radiologists (or good people, at least).

Why is Peoria in your top 5? Do you enjoy forced moonlighting and never ending call starting r1 all in the most depressing Midwest town?
Damn that wasn’t the vibe I got from them during interview day at all. Is that really how it is?

Would rank New Mexico, Kansas, and Missouri higher. Friend went to Providence and he's an IR attending now. Peoria should not be in your top 5 unless you want to be miserable for 5 years in the middle of nowhere. My 2 cents.

Glad I’m finding this all out now. My biggest worry is I only got 4 prelim interviews and scrambling into surgery would be a nightmare. Where would you rank providence with those programs then? I enjoyed Nebraska quite a bit as well.

I don’t know, I think that Sacred Heart in Spokane is an excellent program with a great reputation, especially within the west. It’s still a community program though and yes level 2 trauma, so you will miss out on some things.

I think it has become popular to talk poorly about the program in Peoria while there are many similar programs that aren’t talked about nearly as much. The call is certainly tough. I just wouldn’t make your rank list based on the opinions of others. It sounds like you are ranking based more on gut feel and I honestly feel like that’s the best way to go.

Thanks for the input. I really am trying to go with my guy but man it’s tough. Good to know that sacred heart has a solid reputation though. I really did enjoy that program.
