I am looking at getting another scope for a satellite office. I have two Olympus CX41's; one has been great, but the other has been a lemon since day one (trouble with convergence, I believe). Does anyone have any suggestions? At our latest meeting they were saying something about Zeiss plan apochromat objectives, but did not mention which models of scopes are recommended. Thanks.

This is a very good question. What is the BEST and MOST COST-EFFECTIVE microscope for a pathologist?

By the way, I like the microscpes in the Board exam center..they seems to be simple and effective.!!!!!!!

Do you have a microscope representative? A lot of places that sell microscopes have people who will come look at them for you, calibrate, etc. Sometimes the problem is simple (i.e., the objectives aren't screwed in right, or one of the objectives is off and all the others work together well). I really don't know about putting one brand's objectives on another brand's scopes - apparently they can be interchangable but I haven't seen that done myself.

Yeah, we have a rep. He sucks. His boss sucks. Their customer service sucks. Due to franchising agreements, they're the only option for Olympus. Apparently the prism in my headpiece is less than perfect, but when they changed it out the problem only marginally improved.

I've used CX41's rarely - we have three new ones (one is a double-headed) and they seem to work fine. Most scopes that are available to residents at the various hospitals we rotate at are BX41's (or the predecessing BX40's); attendings use them too. Some BX45's in the mix.

Are you looking to stay with Olympus or move on? It sounds like the problem is primarily with the service people. I don't know anything about customer service agreements and/or cost of switching however.

I have no loyalty to Olympus, I simply thought that they were one of the better brands when I was starting out. I would be open to any good scope under 8-10k (4-5 if Ocommiecare happens)....

Hi MOHS_01,
I would consider Zeiss; not the most ergonomic I think, but optics on their cheapest model (which I keep at home) are superior to the more expensive Olympus BX4 that I used as a resident. Nikon is great too I think.
