calculus and microbiology; just received it at around 3:30 today

Hi LNCS,

I've heard UT does this quiet a lot... where they wait to make a decision based on your grades. It could be cuz of several reasons: your current GPA, the trend in your grades so far and also if this is your first time taking a course at university level.

Saying that, I think your calculus and micro grades are really good.

Dont worry --- we are all in the same boat. AND like UT says, "until you get a rejection letter, you still have a good chance." At least they didnt reject you, and liked you enough to still want to evaluate you.

Good Luck!

thanks genuine 🙂

So if you didn't receive one of those emails then does that mean we've been rejected? I'm thinking that they sent those to people they are still deciding on, and will make their final decision on the May 22nd meeting. 😕

I guess we are all so tired of waiting that no matter what we hear or dont hear from UT... just sounds negative. I dont think it means rejection for the rest of us that didnt hear from them.

They must really like LNCS and didnt want to reject her, so based on her performance they'll make their decision.

When I interviewed one of the P1s said she got her acceptance letter a wk before school... so if they make their final decisions on 5/22 --- i dont see what takes them that long. I guess some students are waitlisted maybe and they get in towards the end?

i think those who didn't receive the email have proven themselves grade wise already; your final transcripts aren't needed to make a valid decision. you guys are in good shape 🙂

i am sorry to have made you guys nervous. I had a family situation a few years ago which resulted in a couple of really horrible grades.. I since have retaken them and earned A's in both classes; however, since pharmacy schools average retakes, the damage has haunted me years later. I explained this in my personal statement as well as during the interview. Im sure this is why they sent me the email. I hope this puts your minds at ease.

Sorry about the grades. Dont worry too much... when I called the school, they said they had really outstanding applicants and the ad com wants to make sure they select the very best... meaning we all are SUPER GOOD candidates... and its hard for them to decide, and they are trying to give all the GOOD ones - every chance they can.

Just curious... do u have a backup school?

Don't worry about it LNCS, we're all 1 big happy, but stressed family here. Also, I was under the impression that UT grants grade forgiveness and replaces repeated course grades instead of averaging them. Am I wrong?

Thanks guys!! I have been accepted to Texas Tech which I am really happy about🙂 Amith, UT doesn't replace grades they average (ex. if you took the course and got a C and then retook it and earned an A, you really have a B according to UT.

oh wonderful... so u do have a school to fall back on... now dont stress and relax...

I think TT is the one that replaces your lower grade. They award u for improving which is great! 👍

hehe... there is so much black bean .. dunno what to do with it... i didnt realize that one small packet of black beans would reproduce and become loads and loads of never ending black beans... hmm time to go look for some good recipe to make them at least decent! 😛

Genuine, thanks for making me laugh  . My parents are in the middle of world war 3 and laughing feels really good. I think one of my favorite parts about moving to Austin is the Tex Mex! Beans . . . yummmmm.

LNCS: When I first started applying I was super freaked out because I had a medical issue in my freshman and sophomore years and ended up dropping about 10 classes during that period of time. Like you, I talked honestly about it and about overcoming everything in my statement and interview. I think they really appreciated the honesty and they will see that you had to work extra hard to come back from it and that you did it! That alone makes you a stronger applicant in my book, and I am hoping they see that the same way!

You all are my little SDN family group and I am really thankful you are all here. It is hard for people outside of all this to understand what we are all about to take on.

:luck:

Thank you for the words of encouragement Rachgator 🙂

Hi! I recently found this site and loving it already!

Like most of you, I am/was really frustrated about not getting anything from UT. However, I also applied at TAMUK ILRCOP and didn't receive my acceptance letter until yesterday. Before that, I was ready to give up at pre-pharmacy altogether and pursue my back-up plan--nursing. I figured if they hadn't contacted me then, they wont contact me now. After getting my acceptance letter from ILR COP, and reading this thread, I now know that it was a flawed thinking. Honestly, I'm still surprised that they accepted me. I already told everyone(family, friends) that I have been rejected even though I didn't get a rejection letter. I was ready to move on, severely disappointed of course, to nursing since my friends and I would be taking the same classes when we get to the program. What I'm saying is, dont give up if you didn't get a message from your desired institution other than a rejection letter. I wished I had found this site earlier to vent my frustrations.

On a side note, does anyone know what a rejection letter is like? I'm just curious.

Anyone here that is already at UT have a gentics professor recommendation? I get to choose between Fischer and Saxena for summer 2.

I had Saxena..and he was hard, but I've heard REALLY bad things about Fischer...I would go with Saxena...Bergeson isn't a choice?

they're both pretty bad.

a friend took genetics with fischer and got a C. my roommates taking cell bio with saxena and she says he's fine.

according to pick a prof:

saxena:37.95% A, 33.62% B, 18.24% C (although that's for all classes that he teaches)
"He is a really good professor to take for genetics. His lectures are hard to follow, but read the book, do the homework and GO TO OFFICE HOURS! He is a very nice guy who actually cares about his students and enjoys the material. It is not an easy class, but it is a fair class. He is the best genetics prof there is. Take him!"
" Strengths
he's a nice guy, and his tests are easy if you keep up and everything that you should be doing. He won't give you impossibly hard material on tests.
Drawbacks
he's a bit boring in lectures, I fall asleep a lot."
" I had a bit of trouble understanding Dr. Saxena at first but I started sitting in the front and it became easy. Read the material before you go into class, because he lectures directly out of the book and it is hard to learn from what he says but you can clear up any questions during class. His tests aren't hard if you read the chapter and do the self-quizzes from the back of the book. He had 5 or 6 pop quizzes in class but each quiz asks obvious questions from the previous lecture so just go to class. There is no final. Each exam gets a bit tougher each time. The first is just multiple choice and the last is a mix of multiple choice and fill in the blank. You learn a lot of relevant information from his class, but go in to see him if you want to really understand everything. You're probably going to get a better bio foundation from another prof unless you go into see him. Then he'll try hard to make you understand. Discussions are pointless but go anyway because they will definitely help your grade. He gives an opportunity for extra credit at the end that will add 10 points on your last exam. If you put in a little effort, its not hard to make an A."
" Strengths
I really enjoyed this course. Dr. Saxena, though intimidating to talk to at first, really wants to help his students. He encourages you to ask questions in order to gain a better understanding of the material. There are three tests and NO FINAL. This class is not an easy A, but I don't think you're going to find a genetics course that is an easy A. If you put the work into it, you should be well on your way to an A or at least a B... Take Dr. Saxena for genetics!
Drawbacks
He gives 6-7 pop quizzes a semester which count 20% of your grade and drops 1 or 2, but it really helps to keep you from getting behind on your reading, which is helful come test time."

and Fischer:
13.9% A, 32.14% B, 27.97% C
"" Dr. Fischer is about as good of a prof as you can find. She cares about her students, and is pretty good lecturer. Some of the lectures are really dry. Bring a cup of coffee to class. She doesn't assign homework or demand memorization like many other bio classes, but the tests are difficult and it requires lots of work to keep up with the lectures. I've learned alot, but I needed to spend more time working the suggested problems to do better on the exams. Definitely a good class."
" Her tests are really hard and her lectures are boring. You have to know the problems from the book to do ok on the tests."
" Professor Fischer is an impossible teacher. She is very enthusiastic about her research and her teaching but don't let that constant smile fool you. Her tests are impossible and she gives no partial credit. Her tests often consist of 4 to 5 questions w/ multiple parts and if you mess up once you miss the whole question. She seems nice when you talk to her in her office but sends evil emails. And it isn't necessary to go to class, because you will either fall asleep or waste your time taking useless notes."
" she's really a rather boring teacher, but if you do the problem she assigns then the tests become much more manageable....except that she assigns so many of them at once. when she lectures, the material makes perfect sense, except that none of it is on the test. her work load really isn't much at all but be prepared to cram for her tests, because the material on the test is pretty random."

hope this helps

on a side note:

you guys should check online to make sure they've received everything even though they've said so before. a friend of mine interviewed with me in feb and recently got a letter from ut that i believed denied her on the basis that they didn't have a rec letter of hers even though they told her at her interview that they had everything.

she checked online and there were like other people's transcripts in her file. she ended up having her professor send the rec letter again and appealed ut's decision and now she's in!!

so just make sure that everything's in order. good luck everyone.

I'm sorry if I missed it somewhere in the thread, but if I'm not accepted into the college of natural science, but accepted to my second choice-college of nursing, does that mean my chances of getting accepted is very slim? UT already sent me my financial aid info on college of nursing. Is that indicative of anything?

Thanks Vicky336. I hadn't heard of that particular site before. I looked on ratemyprofessor.com and found a bit on each of them.

Looks like when we are in the program we won't really have many choices on who we take 🙁 . I am just hoping they are all at least fair and tolerable 🙂 .

Anyone found a place to live yet? I think I'll try to drive Austin in a few weeks. Driving through the hot, muggy south in June should be a fun experience. They aren't really big on Gator fans up there 🙁 .

I am calling Greg Caldera in the office tomorrow so I will see if he can tell me anything about spots left, etc.

I know what the rejection letter looks like. I got two of them from UT. One was for admission to the University of Texas, and a seperate one came for the College of Pharmacy. Both were one page in length.

i got the email about spring 2006 grades also........im pretty sure its because im a reapplicant. at least its not a flat out rejection and theres still some hope!! i just finished taking my last pre-req for them but it was for the literature requirement so i wonder if they consider that grade to be so important as to wait for my spring grades before making a decision.....i guess ill find out after may 22nd now.......if i can stay sane and keep waiting for a few more weeks!!

When did you get the letter? I got a letter from them that I've been accepted by my 2nd choice of college(general app). I'm wondering if that's a precursor for a rejection letter.

thinking about pharm school + studying for finals...not easy 🙁

April 22nd is when I got the one from the College of Pharmacy, and the other came a couple of days later.

Dont mean to sound like a jerk, but I'm glad I still might have a chance to get in since I didn't receive one yet. If you're from out-of-state, that would've been a factor for your rejection. At least you got in somewhere, right? At the end, that's all that matters. 👍

Hi everyone, I called the office today about some pre-req issues, and asked if they could tell me how many spots still open and if the grade pending e-mail meant still being considered or not, I was told that they can't give out that information and to wait until after May 22. I think the only way anyone is going to possibly get any info is to e-mail Dr. Wilcox.
:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

I emailed Dr. Wilcox and he didn't give me any additional info other than that the committee will be meeting for the last time on May 22. 😡

Also I haven't received anything from UT (main campus) yet.

And many thanks to RachGator for asking for us applicants who are still waiting!!

10 days left... :scared:

Good Luck with everything 🙂

Are any of you guys and gals in Austin familiar with the Manor Road area? I may have a chance to housesit for summer school and wanted to know a little about the area. Is it easy to get to campus from that area? Any help is REALLY appreciated!

I'll pass on any news I hear 🙂 .

Hey Rachgator,
I THINK, if my memory serves me correct, that Manor Rd. is around 51st St. area. There's an HEB (grocery store), some eateries (Jason's Deli, FREEBIRDS!, a Sears, and some other stuff. It's pretty much like a small neighborhood, no apts, and I also think there's a bus route that goes to UT, I think the bus stop is across from the HEB.
It's been awhile since I've been in Austin so hopefully a current UT student can tell you more about it. Thanks for all your help again.

Thanks for the info. I think the house in east Austin (78702-about 3 miles east of the school on the other side of I-35) near MLK on the 6 and 18 bus routes. I ran the zip code through google and it said there was gang actvity in that area! Anyone know anything about this? I would have to walk a half a mile to the bus everyday and just want to make sure I am safe.

i would try to stay west of IH-35. the neighborhoods east if IH35 are a bit scary.

try looking into North Campus, Riverside area, West Campus, or Far West (north off of Mopac Loop 1). These are where most students live.

I second that, try to stay west of ih35 if at all possible. There are alot of people trying to sublease their apt for the summer so you can find alot of great deals. Last finals are on Tuesday so act fast before they all leave for summer.

my grandpa lived in that area from 1960s-2004 and it changed a lot. i would not say that it is really safe to go out totally by yourself at night. when i was staying with my grandpa one summer when he was sick i HAD to be in by the time it was getting dark. anyways if you do stay there just be careful and vigilent (spelling?).

Thanks for the area info! The woman was very honest with me about the crime in the area so I decided against it. The price was right but I would have to walk quite a bit to the bus each day. I am looking on craiglist and, hopefully, people who haven't found anyone will be willing to sublease starting July 1.

Keeping you all in my thoughts :luck: !

You don't want to live in that area! (Manor and MLK).
I just joined SDN and this is my first post.... but trust me on this one.

Also, when you get addresses of where you might move to, you can go to http://www.capmetro.org/
Go to trip planner (lower right hand side).
Put in your starting destination and final destination (just type UT).
It will give you a bus trip itinerary, including any transfers you might have to make.
One more thing, you will not need to buy bus tickets, your UT id gives you free rides!

Good luck on finding a place.
