Jen1996,
I declined the Baylor acceptance and accepted UTSA's for many reasons: atmosphere, laptop program, and b/c it is close to home. I was pretty much set on San Antonio until I interviewed at Houston. I loved the school and the closeness shared among the students. The smaller class size was also attractive. So if I got accepted there I would seriously consider it, but as you can see from previous posts, there's a good chance that I won't hear anything.
The key to my acceptance was my DAT. With a gpa of <3.0 when I applied, I knew that I really had to score high to prove to the schools that my gpa was not an indicator of what kind of student I was. The extracurriculars and volunteering helped, but probably not as much as the DAT. There wasn't anything spectacular about my interviews. Just try to keep them talking, ask lots of questions. That's what I did. I think I had good recommendations also b/c I did well in the respective classes. Since I started my college years as an engineering major, my GPA was low. But once i switched into Biology, there was an upward trend of grades. The adcoms might have taken that into consideration. But the DAT is the key!
I took the Kaplan class last summer, and I thought that it was a good start, but just a start. I did all the required and optional assignments, sometimes even taking subject tests multiple times. I printed out all the tests and did problems where ever I went. They advise you to look at all the problems, and not just the ones you miss, and this is so true. I must have looked through the flash cards 6 or 7 times. I also tried going through all the Chem/Orgo/Bio textbooks I had but that became tedious. But I used them alot as references. You have to put in the work. I had to sacrifice alot that summer, but it paid off in the end. While taking the Kaplan classes, I studied about 3 hrs a day everyday. After it ended, in the month before my test, I put in about 5 hrs/day. Remember, its not how long you study, its how well you study. I read through the Kaplan book 3 or 4 times and I really tried to retain/memorize everything. If you want to know more about the specific subjects, you can PM me.
Hope that helps and good luck this year!
