Hey, everybody ,

Do not want to upset anyone, but I did talk to UT Houston yesterday; they told me they sent few letters last week and that it was their 2nd round of admissions; and that the class is full for now.

ARe you sure, becuase I talked to celeste and she told me that half the class is full, there waiting till february to send out more acceptances.

I also just talked with Celeste. She said their class so far had about 50 acceptances which leaves give or take about 15 more spots. She said a hand full of letters has already gone out and they will send another hand full of letters out sometime next week. She said that they are still early in the process and that she knows that they have several dual deposited applicants.

I guess we all need to just keep the faith and keep each other updated.

so do they know if you've put down a deposit at another school? would they not offer an acceptance because of this?

IT was specifically stated that by dean at UT houston, that they do talk amongst each other, I.E baylor admission director talks with UT houston and San Antonio, so they know when students put down multiple acceptances, they stated that we should not do this, becuase it really slows down the accpetance process.

HD

they contacted me about my dual deposit almost immediately after the deadlines, so they do talk amongst the schools, and then they both confront you. it reminded me of the time i tried to date two girls at once...

So after all this, I guess we're all still at the same point we have been since early to mid December..We still don't know when second round letters go out for all 3 TX schools and no one's received one yet..Oh boy.. 😳

Bigbeevo34,

I am applying to dental school this summer, and I noticed that my stats are very similiar to your stats.

Congratulations on your acceptance! I see that you got into Baylor and UTSA. I am sure UT Houston will accept you too if they haven't already. What made you choose Baylor?

What do you think was the key to you being accepted? What areas do you think made you stand out to other applicants? How did your interviews go? Any tips that you could give me?

Now, I haven't taken the DAT yet, and I am impressed by your score. Is it a must that I score that high to get accepted? Of course I am shooting really high, but I want to know where I stand just in case I don't. My GPA is a 3.1 overall and in science. Pretty much the same as your GPA. How did you study for the DAT to score so high? How many hours and for how long? If you didn't study that much, let me know if you're just really smart and didn't need to study.

I plan to take the DAT in May and get my application in by mid June. I am interning 24 hours a week for a dentist. I will have worked there for over four months by the time I send in my application. I am also doing volunteer work. I am an older student that is 31. I think that I noticed that you played soccer. Where you an athlete in college? I was not an athlete, and I know that is a plus for those that are.

Again, congratulations. Thanks for any advice you might have. By the way, I am from Texas if you haven't already realized that.

Yah, the waiting sucks, and whats worse is that newbs are coming on here asking questions already. Nothin against newbs, just makin me realize that the application for next cycle is coming out soon. Slowly but surely the door to acceptance is slowly closing on 2005.

Well, if the door does close on us, then I guess we will all meet again soon next year, wont we???...
Anyway, Hi everyone I am a new member, have been following the news and am in the same boat as you all. I wish you guys good luck. and that until the door closes, Hang In There!

I certainly hope not. I was supposed to interview at my first choice in September, but I had already accepted another interview on the same date. So, my first choice pushed my interview date all the way to December! Needless to say, I didn't even have a chance at the first round.

I got an acceptance in December and put a deposit down, just incase I didn't hear back from my first choice in the second round.

Anyone out there know if the schools will pass up on someone who already put a deposit for another school? 😱

were speaking of just in texas, the deans of each school go over a list of students who they accepted and find out whether or not you doubled up on deposits,

Yes, I understand. I was speaking of the Texas schools.

I would think that if you deposited at let say baylor, that UT houston and San antionio, would scratch you off the list. If you only got accepted to 1 school in texas I could see that would be the school you would be destined to go to.

I know a girl at San Antonio, that wanted to get into UT houston, but it didn't work out she ended up at San Antonio.

I would just be happy with the acceptance you got.

Again there are some of us who haven't gotten a letter yet.

It seems some people may factor in imaginary friendships with people who work at the dental school when they consider their chances of being accepted.

Be reminded that these people talk to many students each year and will often give the same information to them. It is their job to simply give out information and they are not going to be getting paid more just because they let YOU in.

With that being said, yes it is sad that houston only has ~60 seats to offer and with it being this late in the game I would discontinue my chances.

Jen1996,

I declined the Baylor acceptance and accepted UTSA's for many reasons: atmosphere, laptop program, and b/c it is close to home. I was pretty much set on San Antonio until I interviewed at Houston. I loved the school and the closeness shared among the students. The smaller class size was also attractive. So if I got accepted there I would seriously consider it, but as you can see from previous posts, there's a good chance that I won't hear anything.

The key to my acceptance was my DAT. With a gpa of <3.0 when I applied, I knew that I really had to score high to prove to the schools that my gpa was not an indicator of what kind of student I was. The extracurriculars and volunteering helped, but probably not as much as the DAT. There wasn't anything spectacular about my interviews. Just try to keep them talking, ask lots of questions. That's what I did. I think I had good recommendations also b/c I did well in the respective classes. Since I started my college years as an engineering major, my GPA was low. But once i switched into Biology, there was an upward trend of grades. The adcoms might have taken that into consideration. But the DAT is the key!

I took the Kaplan class last summer, and I thought that it was a good start, but just a start. I did all the required and optional assignments, sometimes even taking subject tests multiple times. I printed out all the tests and did problems where ever I went. They advise you to look at all the problems, and not just the ones you miss, and this is so true. I must have looked through the flash cards 6 or 7 times. I also tried going through all the Chem/Orgo/Bio textbooks I had but that became tedious. But I used them alot as references. You have to put in the work. I had to sacrifice alot that summer, but it paid off in the end. While taking the Kaplan classes, I studied about 3 hrs a day everyday. After it ended, in the month before my test, I put in about 5 hrs/day. Remember, its not how long you study, its how well you study. I read through the Kaplan book 3 or 4 times and I really tried to retain/memorize everything. If you want to know more about the specific subjects, you can PM me.

Hope that helps and good luck this year!

Rrrrriiiiigggghhhhttttt...Whereever that came from..Here's the only scoop I know..Was down in Houston interviewing after 1st round and the dean of admissions straight up said if we had a letter in our posession that we needed to say yes to guarantee us a seat somewhere..He said there would be lots of musical chairs during Feb and Mar until the classes settled early in April..It's happened b/f and will happen again..He said there are no grudges held against anyone who accepts, then gets a letter from their 1st choice, declines the 1st acceptance, and accepts the 2nd one..I think the big deal is actually having 2 deposits down, holding down 2 spots, and possibly making them miss out on a student..Don't give up hope just b/c you didn't get a letter or didn't get your 1st choice yet..It could happen..Hold the faith my friends!!! 😀

I finally settled on UTHSCSA. I really liked both schools, but when it comes down to it, San Antonio's departments were better organized. While I loved the atmosphere and students at Houston, I think San Antonio or Baylor (havent heard from yet) will give me the best opportunity to work with the doctors i know, and do some awesome research. Tough call, but opened up another spot for hockeydentist. if you got into baylor would you go?

Tough choice, but I really like the family atmosphere at UT houston, plus my family is here, I would really miss them If I had to go out of state at first, but if I had to go to baylor that wouldn't be that bad, Dallas was great, but houston is home.

In reality though, I would take the first acceptance that came accross my door. I am desperate peeps.

So....ummmm...with all this talking...there still isn't anything new...right? I mean we're all still waiting for 2nd round acceptances and are in the exact same spot as we've been since our interviews.....waiting..... 🙁 ....this sux!

Thanks so much for the info Bigbeevo34. I am getting excited that I actually have a real shot at this. Now, I need to buckle down and study for that DAT!

You should be so proud of your DAT score. I know that probably took a lot of hard work to get.

Again, congratulations on your success.

Whoops...

Possibly. I never really considered it just because although I really liked the school a lot, I got the impression I wouldn't get accepted there. Long story 🙂 So I guess ... I don't know.

Very impressive Bigbevo34! Well, If I don't hear anything soon, I guess I need to start thinking about retaking my DAT. My score was 19/20/17. I thought I had math, reading, and PAT under control, but disappointed with the results... Any suggestions on how to improve these subjects?

I'm really getting nervous here... Everybody out there checking your mailbox everyday????

I have been waiting too but I am starting to lose some hope for a Texas school...Does anyone know what exactly all the hold up is? I thought the deadline for the first round had past...

1st round has come and gone, but there are multiple rounds.

Tweety....I am new to this site, wish i knew about it sooner, anyways keep your hopes up, im from Dallas with basically the same DAT score as you (my PAT was actually lower) and I got in to SA and Hous in December, still waiting on Baylor, of course since its my 1st choice....anyways dont be discouraged your scores are solid and im sure your name is on the list somewhere....

BTW i talked to Baylor yesterday and they said the same thing, that 2nd round wont be out until the middle end of the month....oh well ill still make my daily trek to the mailbox...good luck

I don't think you need to retake it. If you gpa is decent (3.2 or higher) you should be in good shape. I'm pretty sure schools don't place that much emphasis on the PAT so I would worry too much about your score.

Oh, Tilt and Bigbevo, thanks for the encouragement... My GPA isn't that great... Around 3.4, but I have 4.0 (all sciences) as postbac and few years of working experience. Well, I only had an interview with San Antonio (my only hope)... had a great interview, but I guess it boils down to your GPA and DAT... I'm sure that if I had a better GPA, I would've had interviews with the other two schools even if my app was late. I wasn't planning on applying till this year, but since I had everything done at the end of summer, I decided to go ahead as a practice, but it has been tough journey and wasn't going get my hopes up, but it isn't easy controlling your emotions... I don't care where I go... I am just ready to start dental school!

Has anyone else thought about how much it would suck to go through the Hep. B shots and not get accepted. That would be such a jerky thing to do. “Hey go spend money and endure pain, oh sorry we’re not accepting you.” Plus, why is it that only San Antonio sent out those letters if it is a new state law.

UT Houston sent out the shots requirement too, I actually received the same letter twice. Hmm...

Anyway, it says for Hep. B you have to wait a month between shot one and two and six months between shot two and three. Yet all of this is due by May 1st, so really that's like late April in the mail. How do you manage this with only @ 3 months till then?

I wouldn't worry about beach, because you're not going to see the clinic untill second year. Thats plenty of time if you ask me. It would be different if you go to a school where you would be in clinic 1st year, where getting the hep B would be a top priority. I am not saying that getting the hep B is not a priority but the urgency is not that great.

I just read your thread and was hoping to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that you all have accumulated. I am from Texas and hope to go to a Texas Dental School. Right now I am Junior at BYU Hawaii. 3.4 overall and 3.3 science. I am planning on taking the DAT in June and have everything submitted by the end of June. What is a must for the dat to based on my gpa? What are the musts for applying etc....? Is getting into dental school really possible or something that just happens to other people.

New Kid......Getting in is possible for you too.... your GPA is competitive so I would say that a 20 on the DAT would get you in no problem but a 19 is probably still good too, anything below that and you will get interviews and maybe an acceptance but nothing for sure......your extra curriculars matter too though, like what kind of dental experience you have and so on. but i would say as long as your academic average is a 19 and you dont blow any one subject you would be ok but a 20 would be better 🙂 .....just my thoughts...good luck

WOO HOO got my letter from Baylor today!!! Hope the rest of you hear something too.....btw they dont give you much time to respond, have to have my deposit to them in a week....but who cares 🙂
