So I'm currently a student and BYU and will be applying to all three texas dental schools in May. I grew up in Houston and graduated from HS there in 2006. Upon graduation I completed a year at Texas Tech before going on a two year mission for my church. After the two years I came home for a few months then went off to school at BYU. My whole family lives in Texas and I plan on practicing dentistry in Texas. I know when you submit your application on TMDSAS they ask you residency questions and one of the rules is you have to live in the state 12 consecutive months prior to the application deadline of 0ct.1st. One of the exceptions are for those students who are gone for a period of 5 years or less due to educational purposes. Is there anyone out there that is in the same situation I'm in or has gone through this process in declaring residency. (I'm still a registered voter of texas and have my drivers license in texas). What did you have to do in order to get your residency changed from non resident to resident on your tmdsas application? Any advice prior to applications in may would be very helpful! Thanks!

I was in your situation almost exactly, and what I had to do was have my parents (who live in Texas like yours) claim me as dependents on their tax returns. This is what I would recommend for you. Even if you're married, you and your spouse can file as "married filing separately" and both have your parents claim you as dependents. Then you'll qualify for Texas residency for sure.
