Hey guys,

So I'll be starting at Duke in a couple months for fellowship. I have no intention of staying in NC following the year, but I am wondering if it's worth applying for a NC state license only to moonlight during the year...

If anyone would be able to give some advice, that would be greatly appreciated. Just looking for more information on moonlighting availability, responsibilities, pay, and feasibility during fellowship year.

Thanks in advance!

I got a NC license in 2003 when the Navy sent me to Camp Lejeune for a few years. Easiest of any of the licenses I've obtained, and one of the cheapest and least painful to maintain. $175/year and renewal takes about 10 minutes online to log CME hours.

If you think there's any possibility you might want to moonlight during fellowship, you might as well get a full license instead of a training license.

Regardless, it's not a bad idea to have a handful of current state licenses, even in states you don't plan to return to. I still maintain my CA license and the odds of me ever moving back are about 0%. But you never know when you might need/want to move or moonlight on short notice ...

What fellowship are you doing at Duke? If it's CT or ICU, it's probably not worth the trouble because you won't have the time or energy. Pain, regional, OB, (possibly peds), maybe you could make it work. I don't know of a ton of easy outside moonlighting opportunities, though. Most of the local regional hospitals have been gobbled up by Duke or UNC (or private groups in Raleigh), so getting in to one of those systems for a couple shifts a year will probably be difficult.

Otherwise, what @pgg said about having multiple state licenses...

The Raleigh market is American territory. I am assuming they could occasionally have some use for locums but I do not know for sure.

Sorry, yes, by private I really meant non-academic. It is definitely AMC territory.

There were only like 1 or 2 fellows during my time there that I knew did moonlighting, and it was all internal at Duke (OB/ICU shifts, etc).
