Hey all representing latinos from MI...what latin areas are you guys from?
I'm from Texas! Yeah, yeah!!! Good luck to all you guys!
Alright, fellow Valleyite. I'm from McAllen. But I'm fortunate to no longer be a pre-med. I'll be moving to San Antonio in a few weeks to start med school. Good luck to you all!
I went to Columbia. Just graduated last month. I thought I was ready to come back to Texas, but I'm scared of the hot weather. I actually like the New York cold!

I have a question about the word Hispanic... Why are you hispanic? You look like you're caucasian to me and in fact, you live in the U.S. I don't understand the designation.

well, when i say HISPANIC i mean anyone that has mexican or southern, central amican heritage yes, i know this is not the literal definition of the word but thats the way i take it. nowadays the lines between ethnicities are hard to distinguish. fyi, there are 35million plus HISPANICS in the US. on the other hand, caucasian is used to decribe people who have light skin according to the US census bureau. i wouldnt consider myself caucasian. GRACIAS

Interesting. So when you marry a, lets say French / English woman, what will you consider your kids to be?
I don't seem to get why people who live in a country, especially those who were actually born here, consider themselves a designation used to "group" people for affirmative action. The word Hispanic is like a slur to me.

Oh, and a last comment: Hispanic isn't a race. Hispanic people can be white, brown, black, or any shade in between. Having blond hair/blue eyes doesn't exclude a person from being Hispanic.
Right, it is a ethnicity 🙂
Ethnicity of where? Where is Hispania? When you find it please let me know I want to go there and visit... sounds like a cool place.
Baylor made a good point, what is wrong with saying you are Italian or Polish or lets say P.R. American? Nothing. In fact that makes sense, especially if you or perhaps your parents are atleast from there. But Hispanic? What is that?
Furthermore, there are other terms that are more correct to race and or ethnicity, i.e. Latin American or just American.
If you're here your American.
how is "Latin American" more correct? i'm cuban, i'm not latin. latin america generally refers to central and south america, with emphasis in the former. i'm from the caribbean. why not call myself a carribean american? because the term most commonly used for those of us from the carribean--dominicans, cubans, puerto ricans--is hispanic.
where is hispania? well, where is latinia? when you find it, let me know. i understand what you're saying about latin america, but it's a cluster of countries. why not just say mexican american? 'latin' works to generalize, why can't 'hispanic'?
there is nothing wrong in saying i am cuban american, but when it comes down to the question on the app, there aren't that many selections. hispanic does the job just well, while 'white' or 'black' does the job for race.
i am an american. but i can't deny my history. why can't i be hispanic? it's not taking away from my being an american.
I understand what you're saying but my point is latin is a real term used througout the world. Hispanic was really a word termed and created by the Nixon administration.
As well, saying you are cuban American well, that depends... Were you born here? Because if you are then I would have to say you're American. Right?
From Webster's:
Main Entry: His·pan·ic
Pronunciation: \hi-ˈspa-nik\
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin hispanicus, from Hispania Iberian Peninsula, Spain
Date: circa 1889
: of, relating to, or being a person of Latin American descent living in the United States; especially : one of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin
oh... my... jesus... this isnt what this thread is about. drop it.Webster now has the word bitch in it too and fornication under consent of the king. Ok, fine.
But what are you saying, people from south American are really from Spain? So, they should be called hispania from the Iberian Peninsula.
Ok, hmmmm, so let me get this straight Cuban's, Mexican's and P.R.'s are from Spanish decent but have come here from the respective countries and now should be termed on where they originally came from of prior generations?
Ok!
oh... my... jesus... this isnt what this thread is about. drop it.
Why even argue? Everyone, stop using the term Hispanic, because it is unsettling to someone on a studentdoc forum. Please ...
excuse me but if someone doesnt like the word HISPANIC.......THEN THEY CAN STAY THE HELL OUT OF MY THREAD!!! YA HEARD!
Hispanic (Castilian Hispano, Portuguese Hispânico, Catalan: Hispà, from Latin Hispānus, adjective from Hispānia, the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula) is a term that historically denoted relation to the ancient Hispania and its peoples. However, when the modern day country of Spain was created in the 15th century, it inherited the term, and thus, since then, Hispanic is also related to Spain, its people and its culture.

It is a real word. Why are we arguing about something so trivial? You don't like your heritage for some reason? The word hispanic, like many words has evolved. It has evolved to include all spanish speaking countries. What the hell is wrong with that? It isn't an insult. That's like saying being an Anglo is insulting because you are not from Europe. Yet people are still often called Anglo-american. I don't see anybody coming with torches and pitchforks with that one.
So you're saying that people that decended from Rome who went to Spain and then called themselves Hispania and moved to Mexico later on are now imigrants in the U.S. and should be called Hispanic.
OK
Nice new name benzene the Hispanic!
I have nothing nice to say in this thread, so even though I'm also a TX resident like our dear OP, I shall stafoo.
