Any Hispanic Pre-meds???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am half spanish( Sevilla, Spain)/ half puertorican(Guaynabo, PR). I used to live in Puerto Rico. Now am living in Orlando, FL attending UCF. I am very proud of my race/ethnicity or whatever you guys want to call it.

I've been incredibly fortunate in this process. I hope it's an indication that I exhibit qualities of a likely-successful physician...

Holy crap, dude. You have SO MANY acceptances already. Crazy.

Funny how after close to 3 years there are only 3 pages of hispanic pre-meds. Guess I'll add myself to the list and see if we can hit 4 pages by 2012?

both my parents are cuban so add one more hispanic to that!

I am a Dominican american. It is good to see other Hispanics pursuing careers in medicine. Sometimes I feel they are not enough.

Hey, I'm half Spanish / half Puerto Rican. Originally from New York (NYC, then orange county), and now I'm living in central Florida. I didn't realize until scanning over the MSAR data recently just how few hispanics are in med school.

MexicanDr, I actually just got back from my first interview at my state school (Medical College of GA). It went really well! Thanks for asking. It also took away a lot of the stress for my upcoming interviews. How's the process going for you?

Great to see Mexico being represented in SDN. My parents are from Zacatecas! Jalisco is a beautiful state by the way.

holler =] I'm 100% Salvadorian. Born there and everything xD

hey man. How's the process treating you? I still have several interviews to go but overall I've had a good application process. Have you heard from any schools?

I am not applying this year bro, still working on pre-reqs, thats all I need.

Congrats on the good process!

I'm not Hispanic, but I used to be nearly fluent in Spanish. I could probably bring it all back in a half-year.

Would you consider going to medical school in your family's country of origin and coming back to the US after earning your degree?

Yes, I know that the process that Caribbean grads face is the same for all FMG/IMGs. The appeal that I can see in this over going to the Caribbean is (1) contact with civilization (2) familiar environment, especially if you've gone to visit for vacations (3) you'd be attending an actual university (4) you're part of both cultures any way, so there might be less social stigma upon returning to the US.

However, I would expect most programs to take 5-6 years to complete. Whereas in the Caribbean it would be just two years on the island and the rest in the States.

If forced to make a decision, which one would you go for? The Caribbean or Latin-America?

If I cant get to an MD/DO school here then I would probably try UAG's International Medical Program in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. This is the state where I was born and raised.

This thread always seems to die out. Any good news for the Latinos applying this year?

RGV here. Representing the west side. I know most people are from the east side of the valley. 😀

Se murio de nuevo este thread. I guess Hispanics are still underrepresented in medicine... Any news?

I also wanted to share this link with you:

National Network of Latin American Medical Students:
http://nnlams.org/

Apparently, all the Latino medical student associations around the nation have united under this umbrella organization.

It's pretty exciting since they were separated into regions before this past summer. I'm excited to be part of it next year!
