Anyone already interviewed or will interview at LECOM-Erie?

I'm a Pakistani but my grandparents are Indian, so I consider myself a bit Indian as well. I'm in a 0-6 pharmacy program on the East coast. My parents are separated. My dad lives here, but my mom lives in California...so I'm getting the best of both worlds.

I'm not sure about pharmacy though. I'm only a freshman, so it's not a well-defined decision. Initially, I entered pharmacy because chemistry seemed interesting to me in high school and in the back of my textbook, pharmacy was amongst the career listings. So with the hope in mind that I could use some chemistry in an occupation, I became interested in the prospect of pharmacy. But now, three years later, I'm having second thoughts. And I have had a better exposure to the field via shadowing, etc.

I've made a list of career options, but I'm becoming interested in anatomy/pathology, public health and journalism. I'm not binding myself to a career, but I'm thinking about graduate studies in journalism and science or perhaps pathology as a medical field-but I probably should not bind myself to a specialty if I'm thinking about medicine. So I'm right now in sort of an undecided pool.

I have been thinking for a while about whether I should post in this thread. I come and read but leave after reading. So finally today i am acutally going to post.

I got into a couple of schools, Jefferson School of Pharmacy and University of Maryland. I will be attending UM. Are any of you going there, or will be going there in Fall 09.

hey,

I will have my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from McMaster University, graduating with a 3.7 GPA. My prerequiste marks were lower I had like a 3.3. My PCAT scores were 80 overall 96 in chem, 90 in math and 80 in bio... really screwed up the reading and writing portion though... The process is basically the same however you have to get your transcripts evaluated at WES or ECE which costs like $200 ... besides that everything was the same... The interview was really good laid back and they were very impressed with my undergrad program and the problem based learning approach... anything else you wanna know?

oh thats very good. Your GPA was awesome tho! Do they mind any repeated courses? Also, do we canadian students need a student visa to study in US? and ... how are the expenses? lastly, when you come back to canada do you need to write any exams to be certified pharmacist here?

thxx for the info!! 🙂

Hey,

For repeated courses I repeated my first year bio course the first part and I guess they didn't mind it because I am accepted now. As for visas, you do need student visa and the school will issue a certificate of visa eligibility once the Canadian student shows they have the money to pay for the school since you are not allowed to work in the US. It is quite costly compared to canadian schools. With tuition alone it is 28,000 approximate total is around 42000 with living and books in US dollars. So we are looking at 50000 canadian a year for everything. If you wanna come back to Canada from the states you would have to write exams. Im not sure which ones specifically havent researched that just yet but probably an exam from the pharmacy examining board of Canada and maybe a provincial one like the ontario college of pharmacists exam.

thats a huge chuck of money! but do you seriously think it would be worth it? i know pharmacy is an excellent career as we don't have much pharmacy schools here in canada, i think pharmacists are in good demand. if you don't mind me asking.. from where did you arrange the loan? i usually hear ppl talking about scotiabank student loan. How did you work it out? btw which year are you in?

I am applying for a student loan from CIBC I will know in the next couple of days.... I think it will be worth it just from taking to people that have become pharmacists from Canada in the US. I am a graduated from McMaster this year and I am going into professional year 1.

Hey guys,

I'm from the state of Michigan(the glove state). My parents were both born in Indian, but I was born in U.S.

I've applied to 9 schools. Got into 2 already and waiting to hear back from another.

well yeah i think going to US for pharmacy is a better choice because of the short time it will take and you will be getting a PharmD .. not a BsPharm like we do here in canada but on the other hand, it is very expensive! almost double the amount. Anyhow, thanxx for all the info! really appreciate it. Would be gr8 to hear from you when you have started your program! 🙂

Yea you can pick your own roommate, or fill out the profile and they will match you with someone (just like dorms)..

I dont know anyone going, so I'm planning on having them find a roommate for me. Do you know if any other gujjus got in?

I know this isn't really quite the place, but my boyfriend and I just broke up. 🙁 He's Indian (Bengali, to be specific), and i'm Filipino. We were pretty serious (almost 3 1/2 years), and the reason why we broke up was the fact that his parents would never approve (his great uncle had a heart attack shortly after his son surprised him with a Muslim wife last week). His family flew last minute to the UK and what happened was that everyone declared that something like this should never happen again. The truth is, his older brother and father know we're together, but the mom is completely unaware. They decided that he should come out the mother, and perhaps that he should really think about his actions and what it could do for the family. He added if he would ever to go against his mother's wishes (dad doesn't care), his family would tear apart, as well as his extended family.

My question is this: Is this really common in the culture? Is it mainly because i'm not Indian? He called me and presented this to me like it came from nowhere and i'm left asking myself, 'Why?' I'm so brokenhearted and upset. 👎

Anyone here going to Chicago State University this coming fall n is looking for a roommate?

Why is everyone so concerned about certain ethnic groups being here?

cause we stick to our own,...we like our convenience store, not casino indian group:laugh:

jkjk i guess its just easier to relate

Hi guys,
I am from India and currently I am doing my PhD directly after my bachelors. After seeing the pharm d students, I am intrested in doing Pharm d. I wonder if I need to take up the pre reqs for applying Universities or will my b pharm degree from india will suffice.
Can anyone advice like which universities give admissions to Indternational students. I know about NOVA, WESTERN and Southern nevada universities. But the competetion is so high for them. So I have decided for 4 Year pharm d. Can someone advice a few universities which i can apply after PCAT.
Hey! I also have a B Pharm...and of course I too am interested in doing pharm D. You know, I had the same question...and as far as I know only NOVA does not require any pre req s done in US because they have this international program that s specifically for foreign pharmacists...other schools either need you to complete prereqs and take PCAT and TOEFL and stuff like that. Please share with me some info on unis that help skip some classes and dont require prepharm to be completed here in US. I am going to apply to Wingate and UNC and a few others in the Carolinas. How s everything going on with you? took PCAT?

So I'm gujarati and think this is a completely bazaar forum! Good luck to everyone applying, but just to let you know that in life, especially in the U.S., schools, workplaces, etc....are not divided into groups of Indian people, blacks, whites, etc. We're pretty damn diverse! And it's great. 😀
