Hi

I have a few questions regarding the program. I'm a cardiac anesthesia fellow, planing on doing a 2nd critical care fellowship next year (July/16-June/17). I did my residency in the US.

When should I apply to the program?
If I apply now, would I be pulled out of my fellowship? and if i join know, could i get a guarantee to complete them?
Would I be allegeable for the FAP program?
Would my fellowships help or not?
Would my family get neutralized also? (my youngest as an american citizen)
I'm 37, would that be a disqualifier?

Thank you
G

Hey, I am also applying for MAVNI this year. I am a IM hospitalist, working for last 3 years. I can able to answer some of your questions.

MAVNI open for 2016 slots since oct 1st 2015.
Your age of 37 should be OK for applying under MAVNI, for physicians they can apply until they reach 43
You will get naturalized once you done with your basic training but you have to apply for green card for your wife and other kids who are not US citizens.
I assume u can be still deployed while you doing fellowship which may not be a problem, but your time might get extended to finish your fellowship.

Hi, I do not know about the fellowship issue but you should apply when you are ready.
This is the last fiscal year (ends September 30) for MAVNI.
No one knows if it will be extended or not.

Regarding naturalization, the military helps and pays for you to get it.
You can file an immigrant petition for your non-US citizen family members once you get citizenship.

MAVNI is a long and complex process.
Many recruiters do not understand it as well and you will get conflicting info.
For doctors, I think 42 years is the cut off age.

The process is you meet with a recruiter and submit your CV and 3 references.
You will also work on a very lengthy AMEDD application.
The recruiter will cross check everything (ECFMG, Residency program, Board certification, etc).
Your CV will be reviewed by a medical doctor in Army, in my case a Colonel.
The Colonel conducted phone interviews with my references and myself.

You also need to take the ASVAB, OPI and the physical at MEPS.
After everything is ready, your application goes to the HCP boards.
Once selected, you get orders to get enlisted.

Then wait 3-6 months for secret clearance and US citizenship.
After US citizenship, you get final orders for a Commission.

Good luck!!

Thank you for the very detailed answer.

If you don't mind me asking:
- How long did it take from submitting the paper work till you were asked to take the ASVAB and OPI? (What does OPI mean?) and did you study anything specific for the ASVAB?

-was there any talk about the sign in bonus?

-the time frame for the clearance, how did you get it?

Thank you

ASVAB; you can take any time.
You do not need to study anything for ASVAB.
My recruiter did refer me to a website called march 2 success.
Three days of study there landed me near the very top percentile.
But you only need to be at the 50th percentile.

OPI is Oral Proficiency Interview in English.
Again, a practicing physician in USA does not need to study or practice anything.
Just show up and you will get top score.

I have no idea about the bonus for Anesthesiology.
There is a small bonus for Internal Medicine.
But this can vary from case to case.
Anyway, bonus is a minor issue and I can earn much more by moonlighting.
For me, the opportunity to serve my adopted country and to become a US citizen is the main selling point!

The final security clearance is titled SSBI.
SSBI starts only after you enlist.
It can take anywhere from 1 month to 1 year, or more.
It can be denied in some cases as well!
3-6 months is an average timeframe.

There is another verification titled G 845 which the Military runs for all MAVNI applicants with USCIS.
This will check your immigrant status to make sure you have been compliant with all immigration laws.
And that you have been residing in the USA continuously for the past two years
Without this verification, your application will never make it to the HCP Boards.
This particular verification typically takes 1-3 months.
It is taking longer nowadays in the current security scenario.

Good luck!

Hey

I will share my experience so far with MAVNI
I met with my recruiter in Oct 2015, submitted basic information, CV etc.
He could not able to set up AVSAB since I was waiting for my H1 extension. I received my H1 extension paper after long waiting, in first week of Jan 16.
AVSAB was scheduled last week, and I cleared it.
I am waiting for OPI, and physicals to be scheduled. Seems like they need a week of notice to schedule it.

But recruiter mentioned that, for MAVNI they no longer need Internal Medicine physicians for reserves for this year. Unsure how much this is sure.

Thanks for sharing.

I submitted my paper work in first week of January and now waiting for "SAVE request" to be cleared. I don't know what that stands for, but I was told it takes a couple of weeks

I believe your recruiter is correct.
According to my recruiter, the Army has completed their recruitment target for IM Reserves.
But multiple Active Army spots still open for IM!
They still have multiple openings for Family Medicine, both Reserves and Active!

Thanks for sharing.

The "SAVE request" can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months!
