Just curious as to whether anyone has heard from their recruiter about the Air Force HPSP yet. I know the board met very recently, and that it will be a week or so before we hear, but I'm so anxious! So, news anyone??

Decisions were supposed to be made the 4th but due to inclement weather, the selection board is behind. At least that is what my recruiter said as well. Now its just a waiting game i assume..
WOOHOO!!
Just got a phone call today from my recruiter! 1 of 11 selected for a 4-year scholarship this year! I will only be using 3 of those years since i am going to UofPacific, so i will only owe 3 years payback.
i am so pumped right now, can't wait to get everything started! Hope to see some of you in the future!
Does this mean they are going to give you a 3 year HPSP scholarship? The way you word it, it sounds like they'll be "wasting" a 4 year on you this way, when someone else who actually needs all 4 years covered could use it, and all you need is a 3 year. Clarify?
Pretty good explanation. Its something we have looked at in the past and will continue to look at. Ideally, we would give UOP folks a 3-year scholarship in order to save the 4-year scholarships for those going to 4-year schools. Unfortunately, it can't be worked out at this time. No, the way UOP works is that since its the only 3-year institution in the country you can still use a 4-year scholarship. I could have applied for the 3-year with UOP also...but not really.
The 3-year boards meets in November, and the earliest dental schools can give acceptances is December 1. In order to get a 3-year, you absolutely have to have a letter of acceptance from a dental school-since technically you are supposed to be in already.
When you apply for the 4-year, you can apply it to any school you get accepted to, so I choose UOP. I guess technically they could give me a 3-year, but they normally already give all of those away before the 4-year boards even meets, so this is the only way.
So in a way, you could view it as "wasting" a year, but i like to think that they are actually investing in someone they want and that they are willing to give up one year to get it.

Just a question, I am applying for the Navy HPSP and was wondering about the 1 of 11 selected for 4 year HPSP, does that mean there are only 11 4-year HPSP scholarships for Air Force? I wonder then about how many are given for the other branches then? I doubt you have that type of info, but maybe just the 1 of 11 selected? Or was it 1 of 11 for that round of selections?
Thanks!

Hey, just met with my recruiter today to get fingerprinted, etc. and essentially you are correct in saying that they are "wasting" a 4-year scholarship on me. In fact, i guess it was kind of an ordeal. Apparently the air force hadn't dealt with applicants going to UofPacific until i applied, and they did not really know what to do. They initially said to my "representatives" (my recruiter and the program director) that since it is a 3-year school that i need to apply for a 3-year scholarship. Then they explained to the board that in order to apply for a 3-year, you need to be in dental school already and that it is impossible to do so with a new dental applicant based on the time of the 3-year board. They explained that by not considering me for the 4-year just because i am accepted to the only 3-year program in the country is essentially telling everyone that if you want to go to UOP, then you can't apply for the scholarship. So in the end, they saw the light....and they agreed with my representatives.
But...like you said, they essentially had to "waste" a 4-year on me and turn it into a 3-year. So yes, i am taking up a 4-year spot with a 3-year scholarship.
So for that i thank them, and i guess they wanted me or else they would not have done it.

I'm guessing the information that you were provided about the AF not having dealt with students going to UOP is something you were told from the recruiter...there have been a good number of AF HPSP students at UOP. I often wonder where recruiters get some of their information or how it morphs like the telephone game.
Alright, so the results came out a little less than two weeks ago and I still haven't heard from my recruiter. I emailed, called his office and cell, an texted him last week on different days last week and nothing. I thought he might be on vacation but I talk to the office secretary and he has been in the office all week. I probably didn't get the scholarship but I still would like someone to tell me. What do you think I should do?
I'd drop by the office.
That'd be nice, but he lives 700 miles away from me. I think they place you at a recruiter near the dental school you would be attending and not where you live but not sure.
That doesn't really make sense to me, because aren't you working with the recruiter before you even know which school you'll be attending? I'm guessing you just don't have a health professions recruiter near you. I may be in the same boat, as my state doesn't have one, so my nearest health professions recruiter would be 3000 miles away. 🙂 Let's hope not though![]()
Anyone officially commissioned yet? I'm getting a bit nervous bc I'm still not entirely done with the process (still not commissioned), and I haven't done FAFSA/CSS (I doubt that anything will come up that'll take away my HPSP, but it will be nice to know that I'm covered FOR SURE). And does anyone know how exactly the financial aid work with the Air Force?
I was thinking about the monthly stipend and how I'm gonna pay my dorm, since the dorms are charged per semester or year (and the stipend is monthly). Any idea?
Got commissioned March 23! 2d Lt now! Pretty cool, small, quaint ceremony. Once everything is in it all goes pretty quickly (for me anyway). About the financial aid, you have to talk to your school. The federal government can only give you so much money per year. So if you are on scholarship (that they are paying), you aren't eligible for much more federal financial aid (direct loans). How it works is they subtract your school's tuition and the stipend amount from the maximum they can give you per year and then the leftover is how much you can apply for for financial aid. For me that is only going to be about 5k/yr since school is so expensive...so, not much.
Not sure what to do about the semester/year thing...sounds tough. Is there another option or somewhere else to live?
