Any non traditional students completing prerequisites online ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am not.. I know the post is asking who.. but I am 100% sure that people would say to stray away from taking pre-reqs online since in class is much harder.. and how would you do a lab?

I took biochem online at UNE. The rest of my prereqs were in a traditional classroom setting. Even with the one online class I got plenty of interviews/acceptances and it was never mentioned during my interviews. I'm guessing that would change if more of my pre-reqs were online.

The course was no joke. Google it for more information. There are threads on SDN discussing it.

I took it at CSU. No problems either. Still a tough course.

Sorta unsubstantiated. Never taken one but you are 100% sure. Im not saying to take all of them online but for students who work or have other mitigating circumstances you have to be flexible.

I know people who did take gen chem online. They send you a lab kit and it's more of a pain the way you have to document your experiments vs doing them in person in a class.

Thanks for the feedback. Due to my profession (military officer) I have to be flexible and do a good amount of the pre reqs online until my contract is over and I get out of the service. I think if I do well and explain the circumstances that it will work out.

Admissions also have an incredible amount of respect for the military.

When I was asked my in interview if I lived in Colorado I explained to him that due to work I couldnt attend the local university Biochemistry class but I knew it was crucial so I took the distance learning course.

He basically told me real life happens and you have to be flexible and commended me for making it work for this course.

If you kill your MCAT I think it becomes even less of a talking point.

What did you think of the course, I am about to take it. Did you use the full 16 weeks? Do you think it would be difficult for a capable student with lots of free time to finish it in 12 weeks? That's my goal, but not sure if that's realistic. Thanks

I took the microbio class at UNE to satisfy their lab requirement (no other dental school requires microbio lab as far as I know). It wasn't too bad. Taking microbiology and immunology in dental school was relatively easy for me because of it.

I would check your local 4-year and community college to see what they offer. Depends on what you need really. I know at the CC I took a lot of credits at most of the bio/chem classes online had a lab portion to go to.
As a military officer look at the ed center and see if you have any options for night classes.
All in all I think it really depends if you have a background in science and are just completing some extra classes vs trying to get all the pre reqs done! More information could help.

I used the full 16 weeks, but I did procrastinate a little bit and I work full time. The material is interesting but there's a lot to cover which is what makes the class so difficult. The concepts aren't hard but the volume of information is extreme. Most research I did suggested really focusing on the objectives, but even with that focus it was hard to predict what the exams would cover. My best advice is to watch the lectures and use the text to supplement any topics you're struggling with. I then rewatched the lectures at 2x speed right before the exams. I think it's doable in 12 weeks if you can dedicate most of your time to the course. Good luck!

Thank you for the helpful response! Kudos to you for taking down biochem and full time work!

To piggyback off this thread does anyone know a good online course for physiology?
