  1. Pre-Dental
hey guys
i know there are like a million threads on people asking whether they think they will get in or not, soo sorry about adding another one to the list!
but i am sittin at around a 2.9 maybe 3.0 overall average but around 2.6 maybe 2.7 science gpa. i really want to go 2 SGU but i know theyare one of the most competitive of the caribbean schools. I am writing my MCATs in august and plan on falling in the high 20s low 30 range, so given that happens, do i have any possibilty of making the cut for SGU?
also, should i bother apply before i write my MCAT or just wait till afterwards?
thank youuu!

Depending on what the rest of your resume looks like, if you get in the high 20's you might have a shot. If your resume is blank, things don't look good. Either way, I'd apply to some of the other Caribbean schools if I were you.

I'd wait until you get your MCAT score back before applying. While it's mostly just a formality (since the final decision will only come after they've had a chance to review your scores) the biggest difference it can make is during the interview. If your MCAT is high, at least you'll have something to fall back on after they get done asking about your GPA.

Remember that the interviewers are filling in their paper work while they're interviewing you. When they ask you questions they're really fishing for information to fill in the blank spaces on their forms. If you have positive MCAT scores at least they'll have something positive to plug in when it comes to your numbers.

You are listed as pre dental. I didnt think SGU had a dental program. Or did you change your mind about dental school.
With such a low GPA, you will be borderline at best to get an interview if your MCATs arent stellar. Focus on those review books and begin your med career by rocking the exam. From this point on you will need to do well on standardized exams, develop some solid study habits NOW. IMO it will pay off in the long run!

I agree with previous poster. You will have to explain your poor performance. In the meantime, bolster the extracurric part of your CV. And apply to all four of the BIG 4 schools.

I think unless you rock your mcat meaning above 28 you won't have a chance. I had a 2.98 science gpa when i applied well over 3 years ago and had a 26mcat, and i barely got in, i was offered their remedial program which i don't think is around anymore (AEP or something like that.) now the competition is a lot more fierce, people have much higher GPA's and MCAT scores. I think even if you do well on the mcat you'll still be offered somekind of remedial program and not a direct acceptance into the medical school. The carib is not what it used to be 5 years ago not everyone automatically gets in anymore. at least not at the top4.

good luck work hard rock the boards, find out why you did so poorly in undergrad and change that. if you continue your path you will have a very hard time passing both medical school and board exams.

ohh and change the pre-dental thing. you're pre-med now.
