Sorry to hear about that...

Everyone, NB: - Members of the admissions committee do visit these boards, particularly the interview feedback section...I've talked to a few of them about it. They say that they try not to guess who's who, but it's blatantly obvious who some people are (how many applicants scheduled to interview on the 9th are in the military and live in Tucson?)
They understand, though, that this forum exists for the commiseratation of applicants, so it's probably okay to vent, compare schools, and discuss; just don't be immature. Those I've spoken to aren't as interested in spying on individuals as they are in keeping tabs on general perceptions about the school and getting feedback regarding interviews.
You know, though, that, despite the effort of an adcom member who sees this stuff, these impressions can have some subconscious effect when decision time comes.

I changed the most juvenile part of my original post while (hopefully) getting the gist across. Not that it matters, I'm withdrawing my appllication to UT at this point.

My family lives very close to the memphis area and I am planning on working in memphis for one year while I apply to medical school. I am wondering if I officially transfer my residence to TN during that year if I will be considered instate for admissions and tuition purposes. I really want to go to UT and it would put me much closer to my family than my state school but am unsure if they will consider me in-state during the application process if I am living/working in TN for that year. Also, I'm a little concerned that I won't be competitive at UT and that I'll transfer my residence and then not again nor have a shot as an out of state applicant in my present state. Any advice? Should I suck it up and just go to my state school?

Also, does anyone know of any good jobs for a pre-med during their year off? I'm looking for research or some way to use my Biology degree and want to be in Memphis. I can't find any job postings for research assistants on the UT memphis website. Thanks.

If I didn't already have several acceptances, both out of state and in state 😉 , I probably wouldn't have shared as much info. As it is, it is not critical that UT accept me (which they probably won't at this point anyway 🙄 )
Good luck to you BOHICA-FIGMO (do let us know where you decide on) :luck: and an early "Happy Saint Patrick's Day' to all!

You'll find your preference on the continuum between lecture and self-study, and this will depend in large part to whether you are an auditory learner or a better reader.

Within a month or so, you'll know when to come to class and when not to.

True. But there are a few home-study clinical presentations peppered in throughout the lab schedule. Pretty low key. May or may not be a signficant factor in the subjective portion of your lab grade.

And at your utter peril. Mini-tests suck.

That's what makes your accomplishment so impressive, Funkles, your ability to achieve those velocities while footing it through the blades Flintstones style...

True, my post was a bit unprofessional and immature, but I do hope that the UT admissions folks read it. They need to know that what they did is a MAJOR foul that shouldn't be tolerated by any professional organization.

Yeah, I agree...this is a competitive thing for them too. I'd like to have the best classmates and fellow alumni possible, so I'm sorry to hear this happened. Good luck wherever you decide to go!

1) Get a handle on your anger! Go take a walk. Breathe in and out. Watch one (or more) episodes of Futurama or the the Simpsons. Calm down!

Or Family Guy...

trinitrotoluene said:
2) Get some perspective! You said that you already have an acceptance at ETSU. That's more than what many others can say. Some don't have any. Neither the world nor your medical career will end if you don't get into UTM.

You're right, I'm very lucky to have several acceptances; so how a school treats me is a factor in my selection decision. I think many schools expect prospective students to bow down at their feet and take whatever treatment the schools dish out. I am much more impressed by schools that show mutual respect to their applicants.

trinitrotoluene said:
3) Your additude only hurts your chances of getting into UTM or any other school. If I were an adcom person and saw your post, I would try to match your information to your name and automatically reject you from further consideration--now and perminately. If this is how you react to a minor, correctable setback, how are you going to react to your first serious setback in med school. In my opinion, the people of the great state of Tennessee could do without shelling out thousands of dollars for another doctor like you.

I guess I'm glad you're not on any admissions comittees. In terms of reacting to setbacks, I felt this was an appropriate forum to vent my frustrations to a potentially sympathetic audience. I've seen people who keep their emotions bottled up. They are the ones who die early from heart attack or suicide.

trinitrotoluene said:
4) Call the school and ask to reschedule. Certainly, USPS messed up the handling of your letter. However, that is not UTM's fault. If they want to give you an interview, they will most likely do what they can to make sure you get one.
Um, how is it not UT's fault? 😕 True the USPS may have dorked things up too, but UTM is the one who mailed the letter 2K miles across the country less than 8 days before I was scheduled to interview. Neither did they call or e-mail. I'd say >75% of other schools where I've had an interview have confirmed my upcoming visit via phone or e-mail. Clearly, most of the blame rests on UTM.

trinitrotoluene said:
BTW If we both go to UTM, you are NOT going to be my lab partner. I just don't want to fool around with people who blow up like you do. It's not good for my constitution.

That's pretty ironic coming from a guy (gal?) whose user name is TNT ! 🙄

Haven't seen any traffic lately, and while I may have turned some folks off with my recent venting, I hope I didn't kill discussion on this formerly active thread. For what it is worth, I don't have any beef with current or future UTM students, and I hope my posts weren't interpreted that way. If fact, I offer you congratulations! I'm still not thrilled with how I was treated by the admissions comittee at UT, but I'm over it now. Case closed.

Trying to decide which waiting list to get on for Mud Island apts.

Arbors Harber Town
Cheap (relatively speaking), the apts are smaller, but it is plenty of space for me. No gate

Island Park
Larger apt, gated community, about $86 more a month.

Anyone know about these places?

Hey TNAaron, I was thinking about Island Park...it looks pretty good.

The girl that showed me around the property was smoking hot too. I forgot her name, but she had a HUGE rock on her finger. What a shame.

I like Island Park because it reminds me of my current apartment in Knoxville. I am probably going to get on a waiting list this weekend for a 1 BR.

Gotta watch out for that "rock" 🙂

Some friends of mine that go to UT Dental School have an open room in there 3 bedroom apt on Mud Island so I'm living with them. The unit is in The Estates at River Pointe.

😀     😀

I am PUMPED for 3 reasons.
1) This arrangement vs a 1 BR saves me about $300-$400 a month.
2) These are 2 of my best friends
3) They know me and what I like and can show me the things in Memphis that I want to know about. They can give me a tailor-made tour

Now all that's left is moving. 👎

Did anyone on the no-decision list hear back from utm today?

I am also on the no decision list for UT-memphis and I have not yet received any mail from them. I did however talk to Dr. Strothers a few days ago and he said that it has been pushed back due to the fact that they lost last Friday since it was Good Friday and the admissions committee did not meet.

I'm sorry. I got a little explosive myself. No hard feelings...at least on my part.

Did anyone get any questions regarding meth during interviews this year? Meth is a really big medical, social, and political problem in this state, and I am suprised that I did not get a single question about it during interviews. I got grilled on TennCare at UT; why no questions about meth?

Are you addicted to meth?

I've finally decided on a school, and I'll be withdrawing from ETSU and UT-M this week (SLU,GWU also). Just thought I'd give you guys waiting on spots a cheerful note for the day. Hang in there :luck: .

(I ended up picking UK =best choice/deal for me)

If you decide to attend Vanderbit, you had better resolve not to tell jokes like that. You'll get a cold stare. Meth production is a VERY SERIOUS problem in TN.

To those that received a letter from UT- Memphis stating that a decision has not yet been made, has anyone heard anything this week?? 😀

I'm not on the 'no decision' list, but I do know that Diane Harris was on vacation Monday. So, I imagine things have been delayed a couple days. Best of luck.

Well initially on the letter we received it stated that we would hear something by April 1st but I guess that got pushed back because of easter.

I know what you mean. For some reason Memphis always exceeds their deadlines. When I interviewed, we were told that we'd hear something back in a week. After 3 weeks I called to check on my application and a few days later I received an acceptance packet. If I were you, I'd ask either Diane or Dr. Strothers when they may tell you something. I'm sure they're very busy, but that trip to the mail box is gut-wrenching when their "deadline" approaches.

Obviously the forum and classroom enviroments have different levels of appropriatness, relax and enjoy the fact it is a joke, I was cracking up  no pun intended.

Exactly! It is very important that we learn to relax and enjoy some things! Life and death are serious enough and we should learn the importance of relieving stress through seeing the humor in some things. Life is too good not to! 😀

To those people who were on the UT- memphis no decision list have you heard anything further? I was placed on the alternate list!!
Also if you were placed on the alternate list have you called in to find out your relative position on that list???

Its a shame because I think that my chances are now slim, and I was really hoping to attend next year. :scared:

I was on the "no decision" list and recently made the alternate list. I spoke with Nelson Strother, and he said that they could talk in more detail about my position in a few days. I understand that they're still working on the list at this point. Just hang in there.

Maybe this will cheer you up. From the data I've gathered on UTMEM, [on average] ~130 people make the alternate list, and [on average] ~56 people make it off the list. That's an average 43% chance of getting into UTMEM, once on the list. Interestingly, the average chance of making it into ANY med school is only 53% (from AAMC data). So, you're chances [at this point] JUST FOR UTMEM are almost as good as your chances of getting into ANY school.

Also, if you're on the ETSU waitlist as well, and assuming the same percentage matriculating from the waitlist as UTMEM, then your chances of getting into a TN school is 86%.

Just hang in there. We're all going a little insane from this process, but it's good conditioning for the year to come! And by the way, if you golf, just write "[any school] admissions committee" on your golf balls ... you'll pick up a club or two in distance.

I make meth out of little babies. Then you deal it to the 12-year old school vendors on street corners. Middle man.

Chill, dude. It's aight. I promise. Ain't no one treating meth like it's no big deal, but you can't be serious about every problem in the world 24/7 or you'd go bonkers. As for cold stares at Vandy, well, on my visit, most people seemed to know how to laugh at life. Liked that about the place.

'no decision' --> waitlist for me too, as I expected. They'll actually tell you where you are on the waitlist?? That I was not expecting. Mr. Strother will be getting a call tomorrow.

futrorthodr said:
Yeah I am in the middle third so it is not looking so good for me :scared: 🙁 .
Doesn't all the movement usually take place in May when the Fin. Aid letters go out. People realize they are getting scholarship at school XYZ and decide to go there instead? Hold tight, things may work out just yet. :luck:

Everyone who's been waitlisted just remember that May 15th is the deadline to pick a school. So many of you may get a call around that time. And as for those in the middle third, just remember you still have a chance. It just depends on how many folks decide to defer or go elsewhere. Don't give up and don't fret too much. It'll give you an ulcer (or maybe that's only me). Give yourself time even if you don't get that call til July or August. Many of you will be here next year, and I'll be happy to meet you and welcome you. Now I better study some Path, Pharm, Micro, and Neuro. Wish me luck for the scary M2 year!

The problem for me is that being notified in July would be to late as I would = have already started at the school where I hold an acceptance.

yeah, those pesky acceptances. always getting in the way 😛

no, i understand. the later it gets, the harder the transition will be for me (like finding housing, etc etc)

Well, I'm in the top 1/3. Looks like I'll be sending my love bombs to Memphis over the next few weeks. 😀 Come on, baby, give me that call! You know I luvz you!!!

[fingers crossed]

Good luck to everyone else out there waiting for that first admit. Looks like we need it at this point.

I just wanted to let yall know that I withdrew from ETSU, so there will be a spot opening up. I am headed to UNC! Good luck to you all! :luck: :luck:

Hmmm maybe I can grab that spot at ETSU if I call and sweet talk them a little 😀

Worth a shot! Although, they may think you are crazy if you say "samboo just dropped his spot so he could go to UNC, can I have his spot?" I would love to hear their response 🙂
