How long does it take UT Memphis to get back to you after your interview? Also, anyone who's interviewed there have any tips on what to expect?

A long time, lol. Honestly. As for the interview, don't sweat too much, both of mine were very laid back. Nothing as far as grilling or hard questions. Just be yourself.

My interviews were very laid back. I had a few difficult probing questions but I sort of expected them, so they didn't ruffle my feathers. It took over a month for me to hear back after my interview but I had other circumstances that delayed my notification.
I've been accepted several places, deposit sent it, and now it is like I just dropped off their radar. I've heard nothing. I guess Financial Aid stuff is next but is that pretty much it. I suppose I'll get a letter stating when class starts and something about making sure I'm up on all my shots. However, I was thinking they might send out housing option guides or a contact list for people at the school who can help or something. For those of you who've already been through this, what do they do next?
I sent in my deposit to Memphis et. al. as well...but have heard *nada* since. Didn't even get a receipt from memphis for my deposit. In fact, not even all of the enclosed items were enclosed with my acceptance. *shrug* I suppose we'll just have to wait and see 🙂
Yep, we'll just have to wait 🙂 I did get a receipt/acknowledgement from ETSU.madrigail said:I sent in my deposit to Memphis et. al. as well...but have heard *nada* since. you guys must be superstars. I didn't get a UT interview till just recently. Any idea how many applications they got this year? I'd love to go to UT (well there is the whole "memphis" thing but from what I understand, if I hate memphis I can high tail it back to ktown).
Still nothing here from UT!! 🙄 I may have to throw in the towel and just quit worrying about it soon enough.
CONGRATS TO ALL THOSE THAT GOT IT 👍
Also how was your ETSU interview? I have one coming up in Jan.

Dont be scared of memphis, its all in the perception. Its bad how certain neighborhoods inflate the crime rate and all of a sudden its a bad town. Its like any other big city, you have to be smart and watch out for yourself, but dont down on it man. Thats how there negative memphis images get started. Just stay away from orange mound, geez.
I personally had my most difficult interview at ETSU. I should qualify, one of my interviewers was really rough and one was super nice. However, I must have done okay (although I felt like I had blown it) because I still got in. Everything else about my day at ETSU couldn't have been more perfect. I really love that place.futrorthodr said:Still nothing here from UT!! 🙄 I may have to throw in the towel and just quit worrying about it soon enough.

Is it being too pushy to call and ask about the status of my application about every week and a half
Mind you it would only be one school that I would do this too

They're having an Adcom meeting this friday, so Nelson said letters would be sent out the following week. That means I hope to find out RIGHT around x-mas time!! An acceptance would be the best present ever 😀. But Dr. Smith, my beta interviewer, said because of my 8 on verbal I'll probably be waitlisted until they get rejections from all the competitive harvard/hopkins applicants. Heh I was really thrilled about getting that verbal since it was definitly my weak spot. So who knows, I sent thank you letters out yesterday so I hope they get it before the meeting!
Geronimo, have you decided over ETSU or UT yet? Not sure if you said it in a another form or not, I'm too lazy to search 😴
I have decided on ETSU, unless UT comes up with scholarship. I sent a notice saying to offer my seat to someone else at UT. Nelson responded by asking me to not be so hasty and said I should at least wait to see if UT can match scholarship. So, I sent in my deposit and will wait till March 1st to decide. However, in all honesty, ETSU is the place for me and I know it. Only money could pull me elsewhere.
Did anyone interviewed at UTSCH the very week b4 thanksgiving (Nov 22,23). Mr Strother said the adcom will not be meeting that friday but the following friday which is the dec 3rd. Well its dec 14th and i still havent heard from UTSCH. Is anyone in the same boat as I am.
UT rocks, I can't imagine why anyone would rather live in cow town (Johnson City) but to each his own I suppose.
See I got a wife and a kid on the way. I also just read "My Own Country" and reading about his experiences reinforces why I would like to live there. Plus, Memphis is a little too 🙁 unfriendly for my comfort zone. However, there are those that love it. I just am one of those who don't. But, let's not argue over Memphis vs. Johnson City. They are just different and that is all that needs to be said, not which is better.Cerberus said:UT rocks, I can't imagine why anyone would rather live in cow town (Johnson City) but to each his own I suppose.

Trust me, compared to where I'm from, Johnson City is NOT cow town. The town I went to high school in had 3,000 people. 😀
OrnotMajestic, have you heard back from Virginia? If you get accepted, which do you think you would choose?OrnotMajestic said:Trust me, compared to where I'm from, Johnson City is NOT cow town. The town I went to high school in had 3,000 people. 😀

Well, today was supposed to be the second time VCU send out batch invites. I did not get any status update, so I'm assuming I got skipped over this round. The next invite is 1/30 I think.
At this point, I'm pretty positive that i'd still choose ETSU. I just "fit" there.
What I liked about VCU was the block scheduling, with classes only from 8-12. I'm not too fond of the idea of school all day (lectures and me don't get along that well)....but I just really like the philosophy at ETSU, the staff, the small size, the town....and I think ETSU has just as much to offer. Pretty much, my only negative to ETSU was the traditional lecture. Other than that, I'm 99% ETSU bound. 🙂 How about you? Sounds like we may be classmates starting this June! 🙂
Question: if you check the daily schedules for MS-1 at ETSU, are the Thursdays your "preceptor" day? I think it would be awesome if that was a day of good "hands on" learning.
Good luck on VCU. Options are always nice. I know what you mean about "fit." I have so much in common with many of the current students and the direction of the school. Yes, Thursday are "preceptor" days or Rural Track days for those in RPCT. I'll probably go that route. I would like to have extra training in that area.OrnotMajestic said:At this point, I'm pretty positive that i'd still choose ETSU. I just "fit" there.

what exactly will be going on thursdays at etsu during the preceptorship time.. for some reason i thought the preceptorship was only a week long program that they did.. did anybody ask questions about this during their interviews or know something about the program otherwise.
This is primarily for people who interviewed at ETSU, were rejected by ETSU, and also appilied at UT Mem. However, if anyone else has something insigtful to say about this, I would welcome your input.
What is the status of your application at UT Mem?
UT Mem told me that I will be interviewed, but that the interview is yet to be scheduled. ETSU is meeting today to figure out if I can go there.
I want to know how likely it is for someone who interviewed at ETSU and was rejected by ETSU to be accepted at UT Mem.
Considering the average GPAs, average MCAT scores, number of applicants, number of interviewees, and number of acceptances at these schools, it seems like getting into UT Mem is easier than getting into ETSU.

My guess is you are right. I have a friend who was outright rejected at ETSU but waitlisted at UT Memphis (for the 3rd year in a row). However, this person had kicked up there MCAT 4 points this past April, so I think they have a much better shot this time around. My guess, is if you are waitlisted, you are okay, but if rejected, you may have a more difficult time. None-the-less you must also consider that the interviews are a big part and you could have completely different results from those interviews.trinitrotoluene said:This is primarily for people who interviewed at ETSU, were rejected by ETSU, and also appilied at UT Mem. Someone else may be able to give you a better answer than this. As I understand it, about half way through the first semester, Rural Tract students (about 10-12 out of 60) travel to two rural sites for a "preceptor-like" experience on Thursdays. The rest of the class will spend those days in clinical skills courses to begin with and eventually get to go hand out with a preceptor on Thursdays, maybe in the second semester. Of course, you should probably call Mr. Taylor and ask him for a better understanding.braduva said:what exactly will be going on thursdays at etsu during the preceptorship time.. for some reason i thought the preceptorship was only a week long program that they did.. did anybody ask questions about this during their interviews or know something about the program otherwise.

According to the news, any letter sent inside a state that is mailed by today should arrive by Christmas Eve.

Judging by my experience with the USPS this has to be a total lie.
Wohoo!!! Got my acceptance from Memphis in the mail today 😀. Count me in on the class of 2009! Man it is really a sigh of relief finally being done with the application process since UT-Mem is my first choice I get to withdraw my application everywhere else.
Goodluck everyone else who is still gruling it out 👍

two questions:
1) where do you live (just curious if you are in ktown)
2) When did you interview?

I just received my first interview invite to UT Mem. So many of y'all talk about it being slow, but they were the first (and only so far) to get back to me, even faster than ETSU.
Anyone interviewed with Dr. Wall or Dr. Holcomb at UT?

Congrat Cerberus!!!!! 😀
Yeah, UT was the first to get back to me with an interview and even acceptance before I even interviewed anywhere else. I really wasn't expecting even an interview until around January/Febuaray, but have already recieved acceptance and it's still December.
In my case, the distance from my residence to the college is proportionate to the rate my application was processed..... Oregon sent me a notecard saying they were 12 weeks behind!!!
But with my experience UT is anything but slow when compared to the other 10 colleges I applied to.

In my experience UT was a bit slow but thats ok since they accepted me. I'd recieved other interview invites way back in August. I don't even think I recieved my UT secondary till August.
So is anyone definitely going to UT now? I'd say that there is a 99% chance I will. I loved teh school and the price is so much better than my other acceptance. UT really impressed me more than I expected it to.
Where is a good place to look for housing in memphis>?

I'm 100% sure I'm going to UT, but as far as housing my parents live out and Collierville so that's where I'll reside.
If I were going to live closer to campus Mud Island or Midtown are the best options. I would say buying a small house in midtown and build up some equity would be the best idea, but mud island has a really some really nice options as well.

ETSU invited me for an interview one month after they said my file was complete. My interview was three weeks after that. The committee was supposed to act on my file on the 20th.
UT Mem has not sent me an offical word yet. (However, one month ago, someone at Mem told me that I was going to get an interview after they put my file on the calander. Whatever.)

As for where to live, midtown is very convenient and has quick access to many necessities (i.e. groceries, gas, etc...) The major drawback is the lack of consistency in safety. Central Gardens is typically thought of as the nicest place to live in the area and rent is affordable ($550 for a single in a duplex/tri-plex).
I currently live on Mud Island and love it. It is a 7-10 minute drive to campus against morning traffic. There are a lot of young neighbors, it is easy to meet new people (one drawback to the city of Memphis is that this is not generally the case), and it is very safe. The island has roughly 6 or 7 apartment communities and there are currently homes being built in the range of $160-250K. The apartments run close to $700-800 for a single, $1000-1100 for a double and $1300-1400 for a triple. The main drawback is that it is isolated, but I have found that I actually enjoy the feeling. There is a park along the river that many use to jog and for sports when the weather permits.
Many people on this forum will suggest that it is a good idea to buy a home when going to school in order to build equity over the duration of your education, but in reality this is a very poor idea. Buying a home includes many time consuming affairs that are not part of the renting process. As a renter, when a problem occurs (i.e. air conditioner breaks, pipes freeze, lawn needs mowing, etc...) they are handled by the property management. As a matriculated applicant, you have not spent any time as student and cannot possibly predict your time demands with any accuracy. The other main factor to consider is that during the first four years of a 30 year mortgage (the time you will be in medical school), the vast majority of payments you make are applied towards interest, not equity. If you are not sure this is accurate, check any basic amortization calculator online.
If you have any questions, please let me know.

Many people have the concern that extended apartment living is throwing money down the drain, but as you stated it is extremely convienent not to have to deal with the additional upkeep a household demands. I pardon my terminolgy about accumulating equity as the first portion of a loan is just paying off interest but that contributes to the goal of building equity, a financial advancement.
The living situtaion is dependent on each individual. I belive there is a general consensis that the first two years at UT are extremely time demanding so a suitable should accomidate that.
It comes down to time managment and the following question; Will I enjoy the living conditions and have enough free time to still focus on school? Because it is nearly impossible to accurately gauge the time commitment in advance that is needed.
Someone who has a partner or family members that are supportive would make the home owning arrangment more attractive than an apartment because they would have help with everyday tasks such as laundry, grocery shopping, dishes, and household upkee. Even in my case, living far from campus (30-45 mins), the time not consumed by these daily tasks makes up for the drive, plus the daily drive is a relaxation from class. It would be ideal to have a supportive family and have a home close to campus, but that is somewhat challenging to do in downtown memphis. There are areas in midtown are safe, I have a female friend that is single and has lived in midtown for years without any safety issues. Then if you turn down the wrong street crime becomes more prominent.
Unfortunatly this only first a small portion of those matriculating and many will be moving in town independently. Getting an apartment close to campus has the convienence of a short commute and the social interactions as stated above by Adam. Of course this option still carries the everyday tasks that most people are used to during their undergraduate studies so the pro's and cons can be deduced from personal experience.
My take on living close to campus independently and living out of campus with family support is that the time management is roughly equal. The daily hour - hour and a half spent commutting can be seen as stress relief and a substitute for daily choirs independent living demands but panned out during the week. Living further from campus also makes you committed to staying on campus for a longer during the day which can be seen to increase your productivity or decrease convienence.
Another option aside from single apartment living are the dorms and fraternity/soririty living, which I have little information to give useful comments on.
