What do you people consider safe? I mean, I prefer living in downtown, urban areas. Is the downtown really all that bad because thats where i'm hoping to live.

I have many friends who live downtown, and they are doing just fine. As with anywhere, you have to be careful what you do, and watch who's around. I think the area directly around UT is the most dangerous. Although there are UT police that do a pretty decent job as far as I can tell so far, UT is right across the street from the med. Cars get broken into often. I am from Memphis and had some bad experiences in the downtown area, but most of the bad things that I know of happening is car break-ins. Just don't leave anything worth stealing in sight.

Does anyone know if Johnson City Medical Center is still commonly referred to as the "Miracle Center?"

What do you guys think of the Mudd Island area? I'd probably rather live downtown but I am somewhat afraid of getting my car broken into (i've had it happen to me 5million times and where i live hs a much lower crime rate than memphis), plus I exercise a lot and it is usually harder to run in the downtown.

Why doesn't Memphis do this as well? Seems helpful to applicants.

I just had my interview at ETSU today, and overall I think it went pretty well. I also really liked the area. Lets just hope they liked me as much as I liked them.
Also according to your stats Geronimo it looks like ETSU has already offered acceptances to almost a full class(60). The Dean of admissions told me that they do however offer anywhere b/w 90 and 120 acceptances a year, and they have never overbooked a class. That is amazing!

ALSO DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THE INTERVIEW SEASON FOR UT MEMPHIS ENDS?? I STILL HAVE YET TO HEAR ANYTHING AND I DEFINITELY DONT WANT TO CALL AGAIN 😡

Thanks for any help 😀

You're right, they have only accepted about half of those they are going to accept. Many will likely come from the "wait-list" after Jan. Some may be last minute decisions in May. I have no idea about UT though. Best of luck!

I received a post-secondary rejection from ETSU today. (no interview) and have my first interview at UT this week. I can't figure out what makes me different to UT than to ETSU? Is it just that ETSU has a smaller class size? I am from Memphis

I live in Johnson City and No they do not refer JCMC as the Miracle center anymore.

Thanks. Can you ever remember anyone referring to it as that?

I believe they referred one area of the hospital as miracle center about 6-8 years ago. But as soon as all the hospital formed an alliance ( Now known as Mountain States Health Alliance), they dropped the name.

The reason I ask is related to the book "My Own Country" by Dr. Verghese and I was curious as to whether this was just a fable or if it lasted.

Thanks. Does anyone know how long Doug Taylor has been in his current position or how long he has worked for Quillen?

Well after all my waiting, aggravation, and worry my interview invitation to UT memphis finally came yesterday 😀 , and then to make it even better I open my email today and there is an interview invite to Meharry 🙂. The past two days have been good.

Did anybody else have a split inteview at UT MEMPHIS?? I have one in Memphis and then another one two days later in Nashville.

I got my interview invite from UT yesterday as well. All in Memphis, but I live in Memphis.

I called UT the other day, and it turns out I have an interview. Shouldn't they have...told me about this in some way? I've gotten no letter, no email, nothin. Has this happened to anyone else?

And another question...does everyone who sends in a secondary get an interview? Is that why I didn't get a letter?

jmmmmm. If you called and they told you verbally, then they probably have you on the list, they just haven't gotten around to sending the letter (I only got 2 weeks notice). Also, they are starting to send out email notifications to some people. If you spoke with them a while back, then I might check back with them. If it was in the last day or two, I'd be inclined to wait another day or so.

Does ETSU have more "instruction days" than UT Memphis? ETSU runs from Aug. 1 through the end of May. UT Memphis starts about two weeks later and ends about the same time but appears to have a little more vacation worked in as well.

Has anyone tried calling UT to see if you were accepted after the adcom committee has met (usually friday after your interview), but before you receive your formal letter?

All these threads about scholarships have got me thinking...UT's literature says they interview for these things in January. If anyone has scheduled a scholarship interview let us know so we can stop checking our e-mail/mailbox. I know that some of you smart TNers will get them!! (Maybe I'll start playing Powerball...I think my odds are bettter  )

I think last year's scholarship interviews were in late march (maybe 21st and 22nd) so I'll bet there won't even be notices sent out for them for quite a bit (based on how slow memphis has been on things so far this year).

I have a few other acceptances....BUT i would find it hard to turn down $80,000 free moohlas!!

~madrigail

Sweet deal, but I think they only give out 5. Those probably go to the 4.0 GPA, 40+ MCAT, students. That is who I would be looking for if I had $400K in scholarship to give out.

At my interview Mr. Struther was telling me us about a guy who forgot to pack his suit shirt for his interview day and didn't notice until the morning of. Apparently the kid looks up a dry cleaner, goes down there, and buys a guy's shirt as he's picking up his cleaning. He said it was such a good story and showed thinking on his feet, that they ended up giving him a scholarship!

That is pretty good! I haven't heard that one before. I actually forgot my suitpants at one interview in MO but sadly 🙁 it didn't turn into more than a $3,000 scholarship.

What is Family Medicine - ART? I came across in when looking at residency slots the other day. I have never heard of the ART and I was curious.

So Geronimo, did you choose Quillen after-all then?
Yep, as of yesterday! Spent some time hiking and talking it over with God.

Congrats on your choice. 🙂 Depending on the outcome of the adcom meeting at my state school, I just may see you there in July. 🙂

Since it is your #1 choice, I hope you get in at your state school but you never know what plans God has for you. I really thought I would end up at an Osteopathic school given my interest in missions/rural medicine and all, but God saw fit to direct me to ETSU. Please keep me updated. I'm going to start an official "Class of 2009 James. H Quillen College of Medicine" Post in the Allopathic Forum today.

Ok, so I'm an Oregonian, not a Tennesseean. BUT, I interview on October 4th at ETSU, which I think is amazing considering I'm not only out of state, but WAY out of state. It's my #2 choice (behind my state school). I like the idea of the smaller class size, and their focus on rural care.

I plan on flying in to Tri-Cities Airport (I think). Is that the closest airport?

Yes, Tri-cities is the closest airport.

Did they actually give you a date? I talked to a guy on the phone maybe a week or two before Christmas, and he told me that I would have an interview.

To this date, I have received nothing.

Really, both OHSU and ETSU have similar philospies of primary rural care (it's what I'm interested in)...and truly, only two things place OHSU above ETSU for me:
-It's in my home state
-It has block scheduling (done by noon!!!)

Other than that, I loved ETSU, Johnson City, everything, and would be quite happy to attend. As you said, I'll go where God leads.

That makes sense. I know I had to make that same decision. I was actually accepted at DMU with a half scholarship (which made it roughly equal to ETSU) but going to Iowa when my family lives in the southeast just seems too difficult at this phase of my life. I know med school is plenty tough but my wife and I are having our first kid as well. Those things combined will make it important to have family nearby for support. Although, I hear the "med school families" are just like huge support groups. They love to help out in all sorts of ways. Some med school even have Peds clubs that baby sit for free on Friday nights so med students go out with their spouses. I have no idea if that still happens at ETSU or not.

Freaker, are you talking about utmem. I spoke with them before christmas and they said I should interview in January, but I have not heard anything yet either.

Truthfully speaking, my state school isn't much cheaper than out-of-state ETSU tuition. For me, ETSU would be $30K/year, OHSU is $23K/year (in-state). I mean, $7K is a lot of money, but not compared to other state's in-state tuition. :S

Yeah, that would sway me to OHSU if I had a choice. $7K x 4 is $28K which could help pay for the equipment in a practice or be a nice downpayment on a house. I would check with Doug Taylor and see what you could do in order to get tuition equaled out. I bet they may have some sort of program for that.

Did anyone have Dr. Park for their UT-memphis interview?? I have my interview on Monday and just looking for some additional info Thanks 😀

med schools have been very disorganized when it's come to my application....stupid postbacc

Does Quillen's bookstore on the VA campus have QCOM shirts, sweatshirts, etc...? Or do you have to go to ETSU's bookstore?

They have a small bookstore on the VA campus. I bought a great ballcap there, and they have some other Quillen goodies as well...

Thanks. Too bad they don't have a website. I guess I'll see if they are open next time I pay them a visit.

i think ART is their accelerated residency program, where you do your first year of residency in your 4th year at ETSU thereby reducing the length of the residency from 3 to 2 years.. i know a family practice physician in Elizabethton, TN who went through this program and did his FP residency in 2 years.

So I am supposed to be studying for my Molecular Basis of Disease Mini-exam right now since I have til tomorrow night to take it, and I am actually one of the students that goes to every class everyday (does not leave much time for studying), but I thought I'd reply to this thread instead. UT pretty much interviews everyone who receives a secondary up until mid to end of march. Usually if they are gonna reject someone, they are gonna do it before the secondary. They actually don't send you a secondary and the say "oh sorry, you are not good enough for us." They will not waste their own time or yours giving you incredible false hope. There are a few people who do get rejected, but that case is very unlikely. Actually, they don't usually reject people after interviews either as far as I know. You are waitlisted and then have to deal with the stress of whether they are gonna take you off the list or not, but you still have a chance getting off the waitlist. This past year, over 60 people came off the waitlist. (I estimated based on when people in the top 40 got off the list.) One year, 80ish people were taken off the list. One year, I think Dean Strother said only 12 were taken off the list. The average is about 40. Anyway, I better get back to the lovely MBOD :scared: . Just wait til you get here and have to take all these wonderful classes. And do listen to those who tell you that it's incredibly rough and you will be sleep deprived. We did not believe the M2s, and we are finding out they were not trying to scare ups. They were telling us the truth. Med school is like drinking water out of a fire hydrant.

First, I am assuming that you are a UTHSC student.

Second, are you on the admissions committee? How do you know all this?

Third, a lady who receintly served on the UTHSC AdCom told me that interview season wraps in early February, not mid-March. When I told her that I had not heard from the AdCom (secondary returned in mid-October), she started using very dire language. "You must get in contact with the AdCom ASAP." etc.

When it comes to med school admissions, if you ask a question to twenty people, you get fourty answers.
