Luckily I have a cool 50+ inch HD SAMSUNG flatscreen in the office and watched the epic soccer match in the AM today, the US match.

AND THEN, in the PM, took my laptop and planted it in front of the TV to watch the AMAZING ONCE IN A LIFETIME Wimbledon match, the longest match in tennis history, that needs a 3rd day to complete...

For anyone interested, it's 59-59 in the FIFTH set (no tiebreaks in 5th set at Wimbledon). Yes, 59 GAMES to 59 GAMES in the 5th set. They've played a total of 10 hours. One dude, Isner, has 95 or so aces in this match alone. At 40-40 I was trying to explain to someone who walked over, that wasn't deuce, it was 40/40 GAMES. Took a while to register.

Really, an amazing thing to watch. They pick it up on Court 18 tomorrow, 1000AM eastern time at the earliest, maybe 1030AM.

Any love for the grass court tennis???? 👍👍👍

I say it ends pretty early, nothing past 65-63. Any takers on 70-70, 80-80, or gulp, 100-100.

One word:

Classic.

What do you mean 59 games? They don't play a tie breaker? I watch the tennis grand slams toward the end, but not the early rounds.

Nope, no final set tiebreakers in any grand slam.

Can't believe they went for so long - gotta be absolutely exhausted after that.

Exactly.

Dream, You can't win 7-6 in a tiebreaker in the 5th, and decisive set of Wimbledon - the way you can in other sets (1-4 specifically), or in other lesser tournaments that let you end with an (anticlimactic) tie breaker.

You'll never see, 6-4, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 at Wimbledon. Note last years' Federer-Roddick match, went to something like 16-14 in the 5th.

The CURRENT score of today's match that is to be finished no earlier than 1030am ET Thursday is:

4-6
6-3
7-6(7)
6-7(3)
59-59

here are some tidbits and world records associated with this match:

It's the longest match in tennis history: 10 hours. The previous record was 6 hours, 33 minutes.
— Longest set in tennis history: 118 games.
— Most games in tennis history: 163 (previous record was 112).
— Both players broke the ATP record for most aces in a match. Isner had 98, Mahut hit 94. The previous record was 78. Combined, the two had 192 aces, more than double the old record of 84.
— Mahut had just three break points during the entire match.
— The first four sets took 2 hours, 54 minutes. The fifth set is at 7 hours, 6 minutes and counting.
— Mahut won 448 points to Isner's 428. Isner had more winners: 333 to 318.
— The final SET is longer than the previous longest match in tennis history. That was 6 hours, 33 minutes.
— Isner had four match points, one at 11-10, two others at 33-32 and another at 59-58. The first and last match points came nearly six hours apart.
— At 50-50, Mahut had two break points and Isner promptly served a 134 mph ace.
— With Mahut serving at 52-53, the pair exchanged a 16-shot rally which ended with a Mahut forehand winner. It was the longest rally of the match. On the next point, Mahut dove for a backhand at the baseline following another long rally.
— The players took their first bathroom break at 58-58. While walking in the tunnel, they exchanged pleasantries, the first time they had spoken all evening.
— Mahut only qualified for Wimbledon after winning a qualifying match in a 24-22 final set.
— The match is almost two hours longer than the longest Major League Baseball game in history (an 8:06 game between the White Sox and Brewers in 1984).
— The scoreboard stopped working at 47-47.

As an avid player and fan, I'll be telling my grandkids about this one. This tops Ruth calling the shot, Mays snagging the ball, and the Larson perfect game, in one. (In tennis terms, of course.) I will probably not be repeated in my lifetime, and that's cool to watch. HA! My guess is, rested, someone will ramp it up tomorrow and end it early. Who knows though. 75-73 would be cool to see on the scoreboard.

The thought of playing that long is sickening. Must be exhausting.

I cannot imagine how exhausted those two must be.

IIRC, the US Open does final set tiebreakers if the players get to 6-6.

10 hours???? I switched over to see Sharapova and her sexy grunting at about 5 hours. That is insane. CPK's have to be up in these two. Singles tennis is exhausting after 3-4 hours.

I love the game, but admittedly, I only watch selected matches. Feder, Nadal, Rodick, Novak Djokovic and some womens tennis... that is about it. I would say Nadal is the most fun to watch as he powers through every shot. Federer has an amazing touch and makes impossible shots.

I purchased a Silent Partner Quest a while ago. It is worth it's weight in gold for post-call days. I don't have to call anybody to arrange for a game. 300 ball capacity, adjustable feed rate, random feed, two line feed, top spin, back spin, and 2 rechargeable batteries that will never die on you... ahh it's awesome. I usually try to knock out 1000 balls in 2 hours and it's a freak'n workout.

how much was it?

I picked mine up refurbished and payed $1200, I think. They go for $1799 for the battery powered ones. No AC as I don't find it necessary with 8-10 hour battery life.

Here is their website link:

Call them up. Nice guys with fantastic customer service. I think they are from Canada if I remember correctly. 👍

Sevo,

I've rented those! They are amazing. If you set them on the right setting, for a workout, side to side, 300 balls at a time, INSANE workout is how I would describe it.

Back to the longest match, Soccer is on ESPN and ESPN2. I have the sneaky website feed of the tennis match, streaming nice and clear.... 60/59, on serve, here we go again...

And it's over! 70-68, the 19th ranked American John Isner wins. Total match time: 11 hours, 5 minutes. Each ended with over 110 aces. 🙂

The best part is that it's hella fun.

There was a post on SDN not to long ago regarding working out/staying fit. Noyac hit the nail on the head when he said something to the effect that you have to find something you like to do to keep yourself fit. If you make it a chore it will be that... a chore. I see my silent partner as my personal trainer. 😀

:laugh::laugh: What do you call your right hand? 🙄

Wait... wait... wait.... I don't want to know.

All I need is a tennis court in my backyard and I'm good to go then. I'd say renting the ball machine in Arizona, at the Westin there in Tucson on a 100 degree April day, was one of the most intense exercises I ever accomplished. And most fun.

If I get this tennis machine, I will have to get a "2" sticker. Label it "Silent Partner 2," since I already call my left hand my "Silent Partner."

So that would mean you grab your Mac blade with your NON-DOMINANT RIGHT hand?

Never mind, I don't wanna know. Pretend I didn't ask.
😀

D712

p.s. I've actually thought about the whole non-dominant hand thing for intubations. I'm a righty (write and throw righty) but do EVERYTHING else lefty (shave, eat, brush, um...wax on wax off)... I know one day my attending will ask me to grab the blade with my left hand and it's not gonna happen. Needs to be right. I think.
