Any UMass news?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm with ya Mugatu...21 weeks of hating my mailbox.

With the March 15th deadline passed, does anyone think that this will be the week?

One can only hope it'll be soon. I'm on week 14 myself, and I'm about ready to explode with impatience.

i feel like i'm taking crazy pills

do you guys think they'd tell you anything useful if you called?

Well, I just called em up and got nothing. She just said we'd hear by the end of May and she wouldn't say whether any big batches of decisions were going out anytime soon or not.

This sucks. 🙁

End of May???

(insert expletive here)...

Nah, the secretary was pro'ly just trying to get you off the phone. I think many of us will hear by the end of this month. I have no evidence to back it up, other than my conviction that my mailman can't stand much more of my UMass mail pestering (see the old Simpsons episode when Bart keeps pestering the carrier for his spy camera).

bump...today will be another day of rabid mail checking for me. Any news (aside from the Bruins firing and that war thing)?

nothing to report from this end other than continued excruciating waiting . . .

I just heard that somebody who interviewed at the end of November got in last week-- aahhhh!!!
What is going on?

It seems to me that posting to this bulletin board negatively impacts your chance of an early acceptance at UMass. This thread has what, 1 poster who is in? Maybe I should stop...

no ****. i figured this thread had a representative sample of applicants, so i assumed that when they started sending out batches of acceptances someone on here would be able to report . . . but apparently thats not the case . . .

Bump

Happy Monday, fellow Massholes. Here's to another agonizing week of waiting.

Let the mailbox checking begin.

Shout out to that...waiting is AWESOME.

I called the admissions office last week, and the lovely lady on the phone told me that the adcom was currently reviewing all applications, and that decisions should go out within the next "couple of weeks."

So I guess it's sort of a rolling process...they're just sorting through and sending out decisions when they make them. That was my impression, anyway.

Good luck to all ya'll...it's so nice to have people sharing my pain.

I am with you 100%. I interviewed in december and still have heard nothing...the waiting game was fun for about 5 days...ready for it to be over.😡

still nothing in the worcester suburbs...

I just got my mail and nothin of any importance there, for the 20th day in a row.

I am shocked that there is vurtually no movement for UMASS SDN'rs.

Somone on another thread indicated that UMASS may simply place people on "hold" with no notification. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I just called UMass, and the (very nice) lady on the phone offered to look up my file and check the status.

She said my file was still under review by the committee, and she expects I will hear "end-of-April/early May" by her best guess. She said that's what she's been telling people.

Not quite sure what to make of this.

-sigh-

Another week, another excercise in futility. Maybe I should not look at my mailbox so much. If it feels ignored, maybe then it will finally give me my UMass note, to draw attention to itself once more.

ditto, Teddy, dittto.

Hi, Guys. I know you're all anxiously waiting for UMass to get back to you. Don't fret. This happens every year and there is NO rhyme or reason to it. Don't listen to what other people tell you about the timeframe of the application cycle. It's all over the place, and just because you interviewed early, doesn't mean you'll be accepted early, and vise versa.

And about the wait list...it's a good thing! About 1/3 of the class gets in off the wait list. I know that about 25+ people in my class got in off the list. Two people even got in right before school started. So you never know! BEst of luck to you all and keep on plugging. I'm one of those posters from last year who stated that it took me 3 times to get in, so believe me, I know how agonizing this process can be.

And as far as Useless Romney's plan goes, don't worry about it. The UMass people are visciously fighting that and it will NEVER make it past Mass. Congress. Bill Weld tried the same thing years ago, and obviously it didn't work then either. And even if the price were to be competitive with other private schools in the state, it's better than most of them if not all of them. Tufts kids are in school all the time, BU is well, BU, and Harvard students spend no time in class, and many residency directors feel as though they're ill prepared. With that said, lay your fears aside about UMass. It's not perfect but it's a great school and it is NOT competitive at all. In fact, people help each other all the time.

Best of luck to you all! I have my fingers crossed for you!

Gary

Hey, thanks gmendese. You are exactlly the one I was refering to when mentioning folks from last year.

Glad to hear you are enjoying school. Input like yours should help me thorugh at least another week of waiting before I need a new infusion.

thanks again.

For those of you who got in or go there now, would you recommend sending a letter of update in hopes of resurfacing your file? Or do they just assume we all know they're slow?
Thanks!

gmendese is absolutely right, it is hard to be patient but many people get off the waitlist at U Mass and other schools.. just wanted to clarify for those who might be waiting on Tufts as well that the curriculum has changed over the past few years, with a semester-long Physical Diagnosis course during 2nd year where students spend a whole day at a designated hospital taking histories and physicals on real patients instead of sitting in lecture halls, a 1st year, second semester PD course that tries (albeit not as much as I'd like) to run in synch with Gross Anatomy, and the whole 2nd year schedule was redone this year so that we are out of class by noon at least 3 days a week. There is still a lot of work to be done at Tufts, and if I had been a MA resident at the time of application I think I would have gone to U Mass if given the option for financial reasons. I think you can't go wrong with any of the 4 med schools in Mass though I don't know much about U Mass I have heard great things and the students from there that I've met at a few med school parties were really nice and seemed happy (good looking bunch in the 3rd year class I might add). Likewise, if you end up at Tufts I don't think that you'll be disappointed in the amount of patient contact during years 1 and 2 or feel frantically unprepared for the boards or clinical years. good luck to everyone, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that Romney doesn't screw things up too badly..

Still nothing here. Not that I'm expecting any news from anyone, but I didn't want to let this thread slip away into the void.

Come on everybody and get yo damn hands up....

no mail for Mugatu either

Aaaahh!! It's April 4th and none of us have heard a thing. How is this possible!! Plus, there is snow on the ground. I think UMass is trying to push me into insanity.

When I interviewed at UMass (back in October), I remember the dean who gave the presentation (forgot his name) saying that they often take 50% of their class off of the waitlist. They really can only have 100 accepted students at a time. I think that makes the odds sound real good since it's probably getting to the time when people will be withdrawing.

Also, I got in in November (and withdrew). But I think the process was intentionally sped up because it was the MD/PhD program. But I'm sure it will happen for lots of you guys. hang in there.

WISHING YOU GUYS THE BEST OF LUCK!

bump...anyone? still nothing in da mail...

still nothing for me thru 4/9....

This has got to happen in April.

I hear's ya Jumbo. After a while, one starts to doubt UMass will ever send anything...

Fortunately, the NHL playoffs are always a good distraction. Go Bruins!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that I got my acceptance from UMass yesterday in the mail. The letter was postmarked Friday. Good luck to the rest of you and hopefully I'll see some of you in Worcester in August!

Can any current UMass students give me an idea of good places to live in and around Worcester?

Congrats ErinT!

When did you interview, BTW?

tonem,

I'm not a current student at UMass, but I did my undergrad in Worcester, so I know the area pretty well. There are a ton of apartments on Route 9 right by the medical school which are all pretty nice. Most apartments are actually in double and triple decker houses which means they're relatively quiet. The only area in Worcester I'd stay away from is the area near Clark and downtown, that can be pretty sketchy at times (though it is cheaper than the Route 9 area). Good luck in the apartment hunting, I'll be in your shoes come June!

tedstriker,

I interviewed the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in Nov. Last year I was waitlisted at UMass and interviewed in the middle of Jan, but my roommate who was also waitlisted, interviewed at the end of Mar/beginning of Apr, so you really can't go by interview date I don't think. Good Luck!

Congrats ErinT!!!!

I'm happy for ErinT, but I'm also just happy to know that things are moving over there!

I just called the office for a status check and update on the decision process. She took my name, put me on hold, then came back to say I was still with the committee. She also said decisions were currently being made and that I should hear between now and the middle of May.

I got my mail today and there was nothing other then junk.

Boy they really do take their time.

I just called and they said the exact same thing to me. The woman was very friendly about it at least.

I am still just hoping that there may be a shot of still getting in (as opposed to waitlisted) and that the first 100 spots haven't been filled already. I couldn't stand the wait into the summer.

Yikes, that's a scary thought. But seeing as though ErinT just got accepted a few days ago, I think they are still accepting flat out. Could ErinT have been #100???????? (cue dramatic bum-bum-bum music)

lit20,

Med schools are required to offer enough acceptances to fill their class by mar 15. I have a feeling UMass may stretch this a little due to its small applicant pool, but i'm sure they "filled" their class some weeks ago. Since UMass is paranoid about having applicants hold more than 100 spots at a time (I remember this from my interview day), I'm pretty sure that spots offered now are made when admitted students withdraw from the pool. ErinT likely got such a spot. Thus we are likely to see only a little movement until near the May 15 deadline when applicants have to narrow their acceptances to 1 school.

Then why not send waitlist letters so we aren't left hanging?

JLazy is right. Since the state funds the 100 spots, UMass is legally bound to only have 100 offers out at a time. This makes the process really really slow (you have to wait until the acceptance letter is sent, then a reply from the student, etc etc)

The good news is that they don't offer out extra spots like some schools, so you know as soon as one person says no, another acceptance letter is going out!

Yes! Send me a damn letter--I'm not sure I even care what it says at this point! Okay, that's a big fat lie, but still...

So who wants to call em up and ask flat out whether they've offered 100 spots yet? When I called, I totally chickened out and couldn't do it.

On another note, does anyone remember anything about the school? It was my first interview, and I don't feel like I know nearly as much about Umass and the other places. Grrr, I'm wicked cranky today, apologies...

well, I think I can answer some of our questions. The class is currently filled, cuz that's what it says in the waitlist letter I just got today 🙁

There's no mention of any ranking or anything. In the back of my mind, I was pretty sure that they were waitlisting at this point b/c the class was full, but getting the confirmation hurts. Sigh....this sucks.

Hey Jumbo, no worries! It's great you got on the wait list so early...don't forget all that stuff about UMass taking lots of their class off the waitlist! Remember that they do send out rejection letters, so at least you've cleared that initial hurdle. Keep yer head up man!

Thats right Jumbo remember that 1/3 of the class comes from waitlist so there is still plenty of opportunity.

I'll be bitting what nails I have left in anticipation for the mail this week.

what do you guys think it means if you still haven't received anything from UMass? Is a rejection iminent?

has anyone else not heard anything from UMass yet? i hope i'm not the only one
