I'm an IMG trying to figure about next year. Keep vacillating between- it cannot be accomplished and that I should be rational and go by probabilities AND I should not give up and give it another try- after all what else is beating the odds about. I literally get TORN between these.

I have an average application with one red-flag that is not reflective of me AT ALL. Anyway, applied to >130 IMs and ranked only 2 programs.

Now, given the above- will NOT forgetting about residency mean more heartache, to say the least?

There enough wisdom on SDN but then there come those odd stories about 'terrible applications' and success.

definitely rank a LOT more than 2 programs next time.

I would also apply top family programs as well.

what's your red flag?

and he might have only received 2 interviews

Quite a few missing puzzle pieces here. Unfortunately, to a residency program, any red flag WILL be reflective of you no matter how you wrap and present it. You need to be more specific about what happened before anyone on SDN can help you. Also what are your stats in general? Based on your ROL, you probably got only a handful of interviews. Do you have some insight into why this was the case? A brutally honest self-assessment is crucial before reapplying so that you really know what areas you need to improve.

Yeah definitely need more details to figure out what the problem was. Did you get any feedback from actual places you interviewed at? You say you have an "average application," but what does that mean exactly? Do you have US Clinical Experience/letters? We need more info in order to help. Drotoman is right about considering FM programs as a backup.

A guy I went to med school with had a few red flags + low step 1 + below-average step 2 (220 something), and is also an anesthesia resident. Lazy reputation.

Working in his favor - funny and very likable, despite no effort to hide his apathy. Seems like things just work out for some people

just curious, what were his red flags and step1?

As far as the red flags, all I can remember off the top of my head is that he had to repeat a pre-clinical year of med school. I'm probably forgetting something else there. Step 1 was quite low by his comments, but I didn't hear the actual # from him.

😕 🙁

Not exactly the kind of story I was looking for. Appreciate the input anyway 🙂.
