Anybody else feels crappy after reading SDN

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also try not to be discouraged by the trolls who say they retook an MCAT with a 40

just to get a better essay score.................

For some reason this sounds like it should be a quote about "the most interesting man in the world."

He retook the mcat with a 40... just to get a better essay score.

 nice one. The guy wasn't a troll however. He posted his score report and it looks very legit.

Did he actually end up scoring better on the writing section and keeping (or improving) his numerical score?

Already in the OP. 40N to 41Q.

It is very disturbing to hear that someone would actually retake the MCAT b/c of the writing score especially with the numerical score being in the 99.6th percentile. 👎

you guys should go read 4/29/11 official thread on MCAT forum, so many high scores there makes me feel inadequate, sigh.
no one over 40 = not impressed

I tried to explain that to them but everyone just ignored my post. People in USA don't get that the canadian system is different and there's a fraction of the schools they have here. Despite having a landmass 2x the size of USA, Canada has maybe 10 schools at best if not less then that.

USA has now 130+ from 125 just few years ago.
maybe because their entire population is less than that of california.

I don't think he is Canadian. He just said he retook because of the writing score. I found the thread already.

Perhaps you can tweak your way of thinking while observing these stellar students. Instead of seeing them as formidable competitors, I view them as respectable, hardworking, and intelligent people whom I can relate to or learn from. So that I improve myself.

Pure insanity. I wasn't thrilled with my O writing score, but F no would I take that test again. I hate writing anyway. I also got a few points higher than I expected and I figured I shouldn't tempt fate.

If he wasn't looking at schools that specifically care about the writing score, retaking a 40N was insane. I would take that score and run.

What, and short yourself 5 points?

WE ARE IN THIS TO WIN.

My short answer: yes

My long answer:
the premed forums suck.

when this website was a few years younger, there were actual discussions on these forums; now its just people biting other peoples heads off for asking the same question after not searching, URM bashing, and people saying "look at me, aren't I stellar?"

There should be some type of code of conduct administered - who cares if people ask the same question twice? Maybe the answer has changed in a few years time...

Its a shame, this website useto have a purpose... I still browse the medical student forums because people are less grouchy over there. When I have a question about Step I I can ask it without people telling me what a ***** I am.

I don't feel crappy, but sometimes I shake my head at threads like "Can I still get into med school if I got a B- in Biology?" and "I went from a 4.0 to a 3.9, am I screwed? I don't know if the people who make those threads are serious, but they sound extremely stupid. And retaking the MCAT if you get anything higher than a 28 is ridiculous to me, unless you're shooting for an ivy league school (which is also stupid, a doctor is a doctor, a gun shot victim loosing several pints of blood per minute doesn't care that you graduated from Harvard Med or Hopkins they just don't want to die). And I'm pretty sure SDN is full of socially awkward weirdos (like those extremely smart asian kids with bad acne).

Yea, there will be a gaggle of weirdos anywhere, really.

One of these weirdos might be there to save your life one day, so you might want to be nice to them.

WE ARE MORE THAN NUMBERS!

I hope. Or else we're all going to be terrible physicians. Or end up doing lots of research.

SDN has a way of making you feel horrible about yourself...

however, there is HUGE selection bias. Sure, there are people with 4.0s and 40s... those people are for the most part great candidates.

But remember, med school isn't law school. We interview for med school, because we're doing life or death things every day. It's an honor to learn the human body's inner workings. So they wanna make sure you really want to commit to this profession.

Seriously, I think this is very good. Too many people come out of high school with inflated egos and perceptions about their abilities that are reinforced by their classmates or their parents and etc. and I think it does well for all of us to be humbled in various ways. Some people might be humbled by the admissions process, others might be humbled by the people on SDN, others might be humbled by the difficulty of material they must face.

Whatever it is, one of the most important lessons I learned is that I'm not hot stuff and that there are many individuals that have faced tougher odds and accomplished more. Just from reading the majority of the threads here, there's not enough people that feel crappy about themselves. I mean that jokingly of course, but perhaps only half jokingly.

I used but I began to realize how neurotic SDN is and then it didn't affect me so much.

Honestly I get the opposite affect. I see the average sdner and it just make me want to work at full potential and push myself just a little harder. Keep in mind people like to lie on the internet. In the end I would rather do better than I needed to and overachieve than the opposite. In other words, sdn keeps me on my toes.

Same here. Healthy competition.

I completely agree with this. There is a time to realize that you want more in life than just success in your career. That time isn't now, unless you're planning to die at age 35. I believe in working my *** off and live the heck out of life until I'm in danger of getting old so that I don't end up like those patients on their deathbeds who moan about how they never fulfilled their potential or did anything meaningful in life. SDN is definitely motivating me--more importantly though, it's motivating me in such a way that it comes with guidance and advice rather than just eliciting a general mood of incompetence.

This is also a self-selecting group. You're going to see a trend towards more impressive stats because the people that actively seek out a forum and participate over the long haul are likely those who are more serious about the process.

I happen to like FM. My shadowing was the bomb. My PCP works 4 days a week, 9-5. She's got amazing relationships with her pts. I think it is cool to know your pts so well, particularly on such a wholistic level. Who else gets to sort through the often conflicting advice of multiple specialists while really taking the time to get to really know someone?

Yeah...people getting a 25 on the MCAT (which will still get you in to a lot of places) don't start dropping their score in their posts when people with 30+ do that MUCH more. Even if the same amount of >30 and <30 MCATs are on this forum, there's definitely even self-selection as to who says their scores.

I posted my 30 score when I got it, but then when I got my 37 I posted that too.

I have yet to contribute to the 30+ thread. I should do that soon... soooo lazy tho:laugh:

Have you nothing to do other than post here? It was like 1 minute after I posted that you replied. 😉

I'm deathly ill. My body hates me. I sleep, I macbook, I surf youtube.

I cough. I managed to go out for dinner. But these antibiotics are killing me. I felt like a leper, the waitress wouldn't get too close.

Hope you feel better, but an the bright side we sdners can keep you company 🙂

Thanks senorsquishie! It's actually kind of insane. I've tried to keep up with everything on Pre-Allo, I have a lot of free time to do so. And I still can't.

If I do get into med school this year, I don't know if I can give up SDN... :scared:

Thank you so much for saying this. I love SDN, and these threads have helped me so much through this whole process, but I felt like an absolute IDIOT when I got my meager 25. Still retaking, but now I feel a little better.

SDN can be humbling at times, but in the end I think it makes most of us buckle down, study/volunteer our asses off, and become better applicants in the long run. Thank you SDN.

Yeah, my biggest problem with SDN was that I spent way too much time on it.

Feeling bad when comparing myself to other applicants was a (more minor) concern as well, but I always tried to take those comparisons with a grain of salt.

Just look at me now... I haven't seriously read through SDN in many months, and yet I am back here and reading threads just because I submitted the primary tonight.

Actually, even worse than the waste of time for me was that sneaking suspicion that I was missing out on something that could make me a better applicant.

Sometimes, most frequently late at night, I would become obsessed with the idea that if I just read a couple of more threads there might be some nugget of information in them that I had been missing out on.

Yikes 😱

I guess it's a good thing I stopped going on SDN :scared:

That's the worst. Every night before I go to bed, I say to myself, "I'm gunna check SDN real quick...2 threads max." 2 1/2 hours later.....

Wow I made the thread because I was feeling crappy and people come in here to drop their 37 score. Should have seen that coming.

This site is deff motivation for me not to screw up when I do reach college. My original plans were to party and have a great time freshman year, but all those low gpa threads have changed my mind haa:laugh:

First off, I wasn't trying to make anyone else feel crappy. But, really? Did you miss the part where I got a 30 the first time around? And my GPA sucks in comparison with a C+ in organic chemistry II. Then I studied my tail off for a month straight, 12 hour days, no drinking (whatsoever).

If you feel crappy, wake up, smell the coffee. Change something up and you can get a sweet MCAT score/along with a great GPA. Let's get serious, if anyone tells you they didn't study all that much for the MCAT, they're either not that serious about medicine, or they're LYING.

Best of luck to you FattySlug!

Oh a 30!? You poor thing.
