Yah-E, congratulations on your acceptance. I was hoping you could share with the group what future plans LSU has for it's residents. What hospital will you be working out of, where will the clinic be located, is the med school back on track...

First, just let me say that LSU Health Science Center is still going strong. Basically everything is still ongoing, just not in one place (aka Charity Hospital). Lets talk about LSU Dental school first. LSU SOD is currently in Baton Rouge in its new temporary campus. The pre-doc clinic was just opened in the beginning of Decmeber 2005 since Katrina hit. Everything in the temporary LSU SOD is BRAND SPANKING NEW, the building itself used to be a warehouse! We're talking about clinic chairs, laptops, software, walls, floors, ceiling, and all the equipments. FEMA had donated some, but also many dental companies donated some.
So what's going on with the LSU SOD campus in New Orleans? Well, good news there also, FEMA has agreed to fork out the cleaning fee for the whole place and pay 90% of the replacement equipments and repairs. See here:
The goal is to have LSU SOD back in New Orleans by next incoming class, but will it happen, who knows! That's OK though because LSU SOD has its new temporary campus in Baton Rouge. Its small, but it definitely serves its purpose.
Now lets talk about the LSU Medical school in New Orleans. The medical school is currently also temporary located in Baton Rouge. LSU SOM have had some talks about being closed down due to lack of funding, I guess FEMA/Government have not paid a dime yet to fund the medical school. According to many sources, the SOM will run out of money by the end of February and it will be forced to shut down if not aid by the government. LSU SOM is loosing faculty to other medical schools because they can't pay them and plus all those furlough payments are getting steep.
When I read all this, I freaking about died! But, after contacting many LSU SOM current students and faculty members, there are no signs that the LSU SOM will be shut down. LSU SOM graduated the majority of the physicians in the state of Louisiana and there is no way that the governor of Louisiana will allow this to happen. LSU SOM of New Orleans has the Governor's support. Outside private fundings are starting to come in to support LSU SOM. As far as training, LSU SOM 4th year students are rotating everywhere. Since it's rotations, the students are able to rotate in other states' hospitals. SOM's goal is also be back in New Orleans by August 2006. As matter of fact, some components of LSU SOM's campus in New Orleans is already back on track in New Orleans! Check this out! How about more good news HERE!
Now, lets talk about my favorite subject! LSU NO OMFS!
The OMFS at LSU NO is still going strong as ever. As matter of fact I just heard this today, there are so much work around to do still, we end up taking in 4 new first-year residents this year and are considering to take 3 more one-year interns! 😱 Before Katrina, LSU NO OMFS has a rotation at a level 1 trauma center in Baton Rouge, but this rotation was for one 5th year resident only. Now, after Katrina the residency administration with all the first-year residents relocated to Baton Rouge temporarily. So basically Earl K Long Hospital in Baton Rouge acted as Charity. Since the population in Baton Rouge tripled since Katrina, scope training in OMFS is still strong. From talking to all the first years, they still cut like crazy in comparison to other OMFS programs out there, even without Charity!
Other residents, depending what year, are doing just fine. In some cases, they are logging in more procedures now than previous residents. Some are in private practice, some are in other residencies (Shrevport, Alabama, etc.), some are in our North Carolina affliates' private practice. OMFS's goal is also to move back to New Orleans. The residency will go back to New Orleans when the LSU SOM goes back. Not SOD, but SOM because all the first-year residents (me) need to be with the medical school, we take 3 med school courses in our first-year of residency. FYI, before Katrina LSU NO OMFS residents did not do much at the dental school building in New Orleans, only one 5th year and one 6th year resident rotated there. Now, there are talks about building a brand new OMFS outpatient surgical center at the LSU SOD in New Orleans when it is getting renovated/repaired/replaced.
So what now in Baton Rouge? Well, remember I mentioned about our new dental school campus in Baton Rouge and how I said pre-Katrina Baton Rouge rotation was only for one 5th resident? Well now, OMFS has a stronger presence in Baton Rouge. We now occupy in the Level One trauma hospital (EKL), but also will rotate through the new dental school. I forgot to mention, LSU Periodontic department has left and has no plans to return to LSU SOD, which means more implant cases of OMFS! Sum up, yes, Baton Rouge is not New Orleans, yes, Earl K Long is not Charity, but OMFS is still getting a lot of action. PLUS, when the SOD moves back to New Orleans, the Baton Rouge temporary SOD campus will be vacant and will be utilized by the LSU NO OMFS! Remember it used to be only one 5th year rotate in Baton Rouge, now there are possibilities that more than one residents can rotate there now after the SOD moves back to New Orleans. Essentially, the temporary LSU SOD campus in Baton Rouge will be turned into an OMFS surgical out patient center in Baton Rouge! Again, stronger OMFS presence in Baton Rouge in the future!
What's going on in New Orleans for OMFS's future? Remember Charity was the big dog? Well, there was this one other hospital that had lived in the shadows of Charity all its life and that hospital was the University Hospital in New Orleans. LSU SOM and Tulane SOM both rotate through Charity and University Hospitals, both act as teaching hospitals. Katrina came and shut both of them down due to weather damages. Guess what, Charity may be closed indefinitely, but it's little brother, the University Hospital is reopening! There were talks that University Hospital was also condemed, but read this amazing article!
LSU HSC has already contracted two smaller hospitals in New Orleans currently (Elmwood and something else) to act as level one trauma centers and triage, but with the University Hospital reopening, that will be the new "Charity" (aka the major hospital of New Orleans). The reopening of UH will unify all the medical services once again and LSUHSC will be resurrected. You all know what's funny though....the old Charity is actually functional and LSU HSC is simply playing the political game of using Katrina to get the government to build a new Charity? So even though all the medical services are scattered everywhere in the state of Louisiana and some cases even in other states, everyones' goal is to get back to New Orleans ASAP! I strongly believe the University Hospital will play a major role in this new resurrection of LSU HSC. I am so excited to be a part of it! When I applied and ranked LSU New Orleans, there was not a second that I doubt the LSU OMFS training had been compromised, simply just a little restructuring with Charity missing.

I think LSU is am amazing school...they really care about the students. After the hurricane hit, they had the school up and running again in Baton Rouge in a matter of days. They will be back up and running in New Orleans by August or September. Their commitment to their students, faculty, and staff is unprecedented. They are at work in Baton Rouge as if nothing happened with more patients than ever. They didn't have any students leave LSU for other schools because of the hurricane, and they only lost 2 faculty members. It's an amazing comeback story. you should check the lsusd website. they usually post updates on the katrina info page.

On a different note, where does everyone plan on living? Since I lost my house due to Katrina, my fiance and I have to rent. I've been looking on craigslist for rentals in midcity but it's so limited, especially with a dog 🙁 Any suggestions?

i'm not quite sure about housing either. we still dont know if we are going to be starting in Baton Rouge or New Orleans. I wanted to go ahead and get a house or apartment in the next few months so i can go ahead and move stuff down there, but i think too much info is still up in the air.

Hello everyone!! I am a new member to this forum. I want to send my congratulations to those on this forum who have already been accepted to LSU Dental School. I am still in the process of applying to LSU Dental School for the Fall of 2006, and I won't have my interview until April. Since everyone in this forum has had the interview already, I want to know how difficult, based on your individual experience, were the interview and the chalk carving exercise. I am very nervous right now because I don't know what to expect or how to prepare for the chalk carving exercise. I was wondering if you guys can offer me some advices on how you guys prepare and practice for the chalk carving test and what sort of questions did the committee ask. Thanx a whole lot!!!

What's up guys....well, checking www.lsuhsc.edu daily, the workers/contractors had just cleaned out the basement of the dental building in NO. Currently contracts are being bid on to restore the basement and main floors. Basically, the dental building is cleaned, but have not started the restoring process and it's still without electrical restoration.
The Medical Education Building (MEB) for medical school just opened and allowing researchers and faculty to move back into the upper floors and that took about 6 months to get to this point since they finished all the cleaning.
Since it's already mid-March and August-September is only 6 months away, there is a good possibility that school for you guys will start in BR and migrate back to NO mid-year.

It's official, dental school will remain in Baton Rouge for the next academic year until summer 2007 while they replace & repair the dental building. However, dental research will be back to New Orleans in the dental building (in phases).
I know medical school and OMFS will be returning to New Orleans.

i'm pretty sure there isn't any student housing. I went to BR a few weekends ago and there weren't very many apartments available close to pennington. However, my fiancee and i got lucky and just put a deposit down on an apartment really close to pennington. The complex is called Turnberry Place Apartments, and they might still have a few available. If they do, tell them I sent you.

I think I might be the only crazy one that will be commuting from New Orleans every day! If anyone else is planning on doing this, let me know so we can carpool! It's actually not going to be that bad since everyone now is going from BR to NO in the morning and back at night. Going the opposite way will be smooth sailing.

Has anyone gone to BR to look at apartments yet? I called the student affairs office yesterday, and they said there would not be any student housing available for us. We are just on our own to find an apartment.
