Hey Everyone,
Since WesternU said that they would start sending out acceptance letters March 15th, I was wondering if anyone has received anything yet, and if so, who is planning on going? Thanks!

Hey I was there on 3/14 and they said ther were sending out ALL accept. and rej. that day. Good luck! I was very impressed with their PBL approach.

Good Luck Everyone.....Hope to see some of you next year 🙂

Yes, I called today and they said that the letters were all sent out and we should be receiving them soon. I guess I'm a little excited about hearing from them because I was also impressed during my interview day (the PBL seems like a great curriculum and the facilities are great~I especially like their focus on the community). Good luck to you too and be sure to let us know when you get in!

I am actually a second year student here at Western. I will be starting rotations next year. 🙂

Hey D.L thanks for hosting this post.
I got my letter via snail mail [in Northern CA] today. I was put on the Alternate List. 😕 I'm glad I wasn't flat out rejected because my interview was mediocre at best. "beggars can't be choosy". I'll just keep twiddlin' my thumbs while I pray.

ACCEPT YOUR ALTERNATE STATUS if you really want to come here!!!

I was an alternate here but did get in.....DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE 🙂

there's no way in hell I'm give up hope after filling out that 14 essay application!
I'm eternally hopefull. I'm still thinking Cornell, Penn, and Tufts will call me to tell me they made mistakes in sending rejection letters and want to give me full tuition to their respective institutions!

All kidding aside, I sincerely appreciate the advice. I've already put the accept the Alertnate status letter in the out going mailbox. thanks! 🙂 👍

I was accepted to Western U yesterday, March 18. I am accepting the offer with honor. I loved their PBL curriculum and their Reverence for Life Philosophy as well as the faculty. I can't wait to start in August! 😀

Congrats Dogtor! You've suceeded in obtaining one of the coveted spots for Fall class of Western U, we should all be so lucky! I'm still waiting for a letter (who knew Cali mail could be so slow?)

ghostsamurai, don't worry about being an alternate, I heard during my interview day that many people who are alternates get accepted (they even accept alternates up to the first day of class). Don't give up hope yet! Regarding Cornell, Penn, and Tufts~I attended a post bacc program out in the east coast for a couple of years and was miserable because of the weather (my optimum temp is usually about 78 degrees), so at least you won't have to worry about freezing your butt off for the next four years if you get in Western!

chris03333, I was wondering how you like Western U since you've been there for a year already? I think the PBL curriculum is wonderful and we have the potential to learn a great deal more than the traditional curriculum, and I was wondering if you could share your experience in that vs. the traditional lecture style approach. Was is a little challenging to adapt to this style of teaching (I'm assuming we all came from undergrad colleges that focused on the traditional approach).

Good luck everyone, hopefully my next post will say that I got accepted! (Fingers crossed)

I actually love it here at Western. I cannot speak about "traditional" vet school but will say that I like PBL more than I liked my traditional undergrad classes. The first few weeks are tough adjusting to the curriculum....no one spoon feeds info for you to regurgitate later on a test. I love having a "patient" and cases to show me how all of the sciences come together. It makes me more interested than I would be in alot of the classes. I am extremely greatful to have regular experiences with live animals since year one.

If anyone has any particular questions I will answer as best as I can.

Congrats to all of you for making it this far!
🙂

Hi All,

I too have been accepted into Westerns Class of 2009. However, I am already going to be attending another school closer to home this Fall. Cali was just too far for me (Im from the northeast).

I really hope you get "my" spot Ghostsamurai 😛

Good Luck to everyone and Thank you for all the info over the past few months.

I got my acceptance letter today!! I can't wait to start during the fall! I guess we are going to be classmates, Dogtor! Thanks chris03333 for your insight into the PBL curriculum, I'm really excited to work with animals and finetune problem solving skills. Now, the hard part of waiting is over, I was wondering if you live in Pomona, or have any suggestions of good places to live around the area (I have a 130 pound bullmastiff so it's hard to find a place that accepts very large dogs that are on the "restricted breed" list). I don't even know why places have the "restricted breed list" anyway, my pup is the sweetest and well behave dog...it would be better to have animal interview requirements instead. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone!
I also received an acceptance letter from Western and after much consideration I've decided to accept the offer. So I will see you guys in school! I was also very impressed with the school and the idea of PBL, Reverence for Life, and the fact that since the school is private it won't be affected by the budget cut much really strung some chords in me.

GhostSamurai - Don't give up hope! You'll probably get in. Hope to see you in school. 😉

I am thrilled to talk to my future classmates before school actually starts and I hope to hear more from everyone.

I also have the same question as DoggieLover so Chris, if you don't mind may I email you as well?

No problem I don't mind. Also as for the list of dogs you cannot have in some housing, it's not the owners fault....the insurance companies will not cover them if those dogs are kept on their property. So the best option if you have a dog is to find a place that is private owned and not corporate owned. We are making list of good places to live for the Big Sib/Little sib program so you will get that. Everything else I will email responses to.

Hope this helps some.
Chris

Would any of the folks who were accepted or waitlisted mind sharing their stats (GPA, scores, experience, etc)?

Thanks! 🙂

Hello All, 🙂

Thanks again DL for starting this chat and for everyone kindly responding. I am highly interested in getting into WU for 2006 Fall. Any suggestions that any of you can offer would be excellent. Like everyone else, I am excited about getting back into school to pursue my passion(dream), and WU has the PBL curriculum that is of great interest to me.

I wish you all the very best on your endeavors and congratulations!

Best wishes,

Vetlegend 🙂

i was thinking about applying to WEsternU for next fall..you guys got any pointers for me? im scared...that nobody will want to accept me...😛 how is the application process? are interviews scary?!

I personally thought the interview process was pretty easygoing. It was a double-blind interview and the faculties that interviewed us were very friendly. As for the application process I would recommend you to look at the actual application on the WesternU website: http://www.westernu.edu/admissions/dvm_application.xml

The supplemental application is very long and requires you to answer many questions so you should look at them early and make sure your answers are good. The interview questions that were given this year were pretty similar to the questions on the supplemental application. They are basically questions about your self-awareness and self-assessment, to determine if the PBL curriculum will be right for you.

Here's the admission requirement at Western: http://www.westernu.edu/admissions/dvm_requirements.xml

If you really are interested you should just take a look at the website. There's some valuable information on there.

I agree with Laguu11, the interview process at Western U was very straightforward. The interviewers ask behavior-based questions that really allow them to get a sense of you as an individual-they don't purposely try to ask very hard questions to stump you like some other schools do-and the fact that it is double blind means that there is no pre-judgment of you based on the scores you have during the interview. My experience with the interview was very positive, and the people (students and faculty) were very helpful and kind. The school is fantastic: philosophy, facilities, faculty, etc.

As far as applications go, I would definetely look at Western U's website. They have an extensive amount of information for prospective applicants. If you have additional questions you can email Karen Lopez (she was very nice and helpful during my application process--her email is on western's site). Other than that, try to gain good animal experience, do well in your classes, and really focus on your application to Western. Good luck!

Did you attend anyone of the 3 hrs Information Sessions prior to applying to the school? If so, how was the experience?

Thanks and best wishes,

Vetlegend 🙂

I personally did not attend an information session before applying simply because I am on the East coast. If you live in the area I would go to it, it cant hurt. Additionally, Westerns website is VERY helpful and has all the info. you need, and Karen Lopez is great as someone earlier mentioned.

Good Luck!
