I've read up on it online, but I was wondering if any of you had first-hand knowledge about location/people/education? Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'm a JABSOM wannabe, but not a HI resident or superstar, so I might as well aspire to date George Clooney. Neither's gonna happen.

Last summer I walked around and inside the new med school building, southwest (?) of Honolulu. It's beautiful. The ocean's maybe 200 yards away. It's in a newer, safe, commercial area that isn't overridden by tourist activities. The bus system in Honolulu is good, which gives parking-less options for where you can live. Speaking of, you can see somebody get run over by a bus in front of the new med school in a recent episode of Lost.

I have no idea how good the lab facilities, lecture halls or study areas are. It's just all NEW.

There are about 60 students in each class, which makes it one of the smaller schools in the US. They DO accept about 10% OOS, but who knows what kind of ties that 10% has. They have a full complement of graduate programs in biomedical sciences. There are strong research and cultural ties to Japan, China and Australia, not to mention California. I don't think there's a level 1 trauma hospital in Hawaii, but there's plenty of trauma, and JABSOM's hospital affiliations are plentiful. In other words, you have access to as many clinical electives in Hawaii as you do anywhere, and possibly less competition for them. (If you get to go, definitely rotate at Queen's on Kauai.) The rural and family med programs are as good as anybody's - of COURSE they want you to stay and do primary care. There are plenty of surgical and medical residencies on the islands.

I've clocked about 6 months on Oahu as a visitor/housesitter. I absolutely love it there. I think you'd have to work pretty hard to find a locale where cultural identity is stronger (Polynesian, Japanese, Chinese, etc.), and it's almost midwestern in how much people know each others' relatives etc. It's extremely expensive to live there. The tourist industry is completely overwhelming. The military presence is also overwhelming. If I lived there, as a new non-military haole wahine (white girl), I'd expect to feel like an outsider for a long time - at least until clinical rotations.

Edit: I think of Honolulu as being roughly similar to Los Angeles. It's big, urban, it's sunny, it has busy freeways and suburbs, people love their cars, the radio stations are obnoxious, lots of people are natural entertainers, lots of people are homeless, and beach culture dominates.

My $.02. Best of luck to you.

Actually, the new location is right by the harbor and across from the mall, which attracts folks from all over Asia. It's not in waikiki, thank god, but it's still in one of the more touristed areas of Oahu.

OP- Know that it's a very long shot for just about everybody who is not a Hawaii resident with long standing ties. I went to college there for a year and lived there for four years and I was still classified as not being a resident. They interview lots of OOSers (about 150, I believe) but only for 6 spots.

Also, read up a lot on PBL (do a search and you'll see lots of threads on SDN). Some people love it, some people hate it. If you hate it, UH is definitely not the school for you.

I'm getting fairly tired of this out of state business.

I dont know how it happened, but I'm an out of stater that got in this year of the waitlist, and I have no ties to Hawaii, so it's not impossible. If you really like it go for it, and if you wanna go there you better like PBL.

to be honest, i enjoy PBL a lot...i'd probable end up having to supplement with more from the text though

Wow, I'm so busted. I was thinking Kakaako was out past the Aloha tower. D'oh.

Double d'oh that I forgot to mention PBL.

Well, it is across from a mall.... but it not like its across from ala moana or anything.

I'm in my 4th year at JABSOM (although not physically there... spending 6 months in LA for rotations/research 😀), and here's what I know about the past year:
-Roughly 1800+ applicants
--About 300 were in-state, so...
---Ouch...

Don't let it bother you, however. I am an OOSer, and the only ties I had with Hawaii were constantly stopping over on my flights back home, and the fact that "back home" prior to residing in California was another Pacific Island.

If you want to know more about the school, feel free to PM me (I haven't been on the site much the past couple months, but am trying to become more active) and I'll gladly send you links to my blogs about school there.

Best of luck,
J
