Anyone use a Gateway Tablet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The M285 - E is standard issue for all DMU DO students this year.

Might want to read consumer reports ratings of the gateway brand of laptops before purchasing one.

Any of my friends that have gateway tablet wish they had chosen a different one. Don't take a DMU students word for it, they all use them so they don't know there are better options (no harm meant against DMU students, your school just doesn't let you see anything else out there).

I see, but the price looks so good lol😀

The couple extra hundred dollars will go a long way in quality. You don't have to take my word for it, just go down to best buy, staples, office whatever that is closest to you and play around with the different kinds. The quality speaks for itself when you have tried the various brands.

Which would you recommend?

I don't think we typically push people to buy Gateway tablets, to be fair. The nice thing about having a universal computer supplied to you by your school is that the tech support is UNBELIEVABLE. I know of a 4th year that was out on rotations and having trouble with his computer. The tech support at DMU sent him a loaner computer, and he sent his in to be fixed in the mean time.

It's nice having your own personal "geek squad" for 4 years. That sort of service is not cheap.

I have a CX210X (my 2nd gateway), it is a great computer. It is a little bigger than my ideal laptop, but it's easily manageable. I have no complaints here.

I really think its a matter of how well you take care of your computer. "Better options" to me means more hardware for cheaper cost, or something like the size of a laptop. But between gateway and other brands, its really all about how keep your comp. Anti-virus, reformats, etc.

I'm a dmu student, but I bought my own tablet. The gateway is a heavy beast. and the pen sucks. There are some awsome tablets out there. if you want a keboard intigrated with the tablet, i would recomend a Lenovo (aka IBM) one it weighs something like 2.5lbs vs the 7lbs of the gateway. If you can make do with a bule tooth or usb key board, then I would recomend Fujitsu or Computers in motion. They have a wide varity of sizes and configurations.

It is definitely heavy, but I try and just think of it as additional exercise. The pen works quite well for me, and you can get new pens for free if you have problems with your own.

That being said, it's the only tablet I've ever owned, so obviously Docgeorge has more credibility in this issue than most people.

I would totally agree. This is the only tablet I've had, and it seriously lacked memory, it's sort of a hog. I upgraded mine up to 2gb not the 512 it came with. I wish the video card was a bit better, and i don't know how sold I am on the processor capabilities...still feels a bit slow.

Pen issues, I've been through 4 pens, but they are always replaced by Gateway.

Support at DMU is top notch. It's the key that makes them such a good deal even if they have some flaws. Weight is not a big deal to me.

Here's my disclaimer: I am a control freak, and I'm going into Vascular surgery. I like prescision. I dont like big fat writing, when I write on paper I use a .38mm tip.

The pen for the gateway is really tempormental, if you drop it even a very short distance it's toast. While Gateway does replace the pen, if you dont have Tech Support like you do at school, you are going to wait 5 days for your pen to come to you from gateway.

Additionally, the pen starts off writing real fine, but the plastic tip wears down to a very blunt surface, which gives you big fat wrtiing and less prescion. The 7lbs of the gateway is not an issiue if you use it mostly sitting down at a desk, but gets to be a big issiue if you carry it around with you and try to use it the way that a tablet is ment to be used. My recomendation is if you go to a school like DMU where the school issiues you the computer, then take whatever they give you cuz it's gonna come with support. But if you are buying it on your own, then get one that fits your needs most approptiately.

The X61 actually starts off at 3.5lbs. Also its motion computing not computers in motion though the latter does occur.

Did'nt know that it was 3.5 lbs. I had my wires crossed. Computer motion were the guys that had Aseop and Zeus. my bad.

If it doesn't support OneNote (especially 2007) don't waste your money on it. OneNote 2007 is what makes tablets amazing machines.

OneNote sucks. Though I only have the 2003 edition (that was the latest one available last year), so I don't know what the 2007 version is like.

Motion Computing was the at the top of the heap back when I bought mine (2nd gen- ~3 years ago now). It still works wonderfully and I haven't had a single problem with it. If you are looking for a slate (tablet without an attached keyboard) then Motion is still the way to go. If you are looking for a convertable, all in the current generation are pretty even.

OneNote is great. Granted, when you form networks it sucks bandwidth like crazy, but it still works very well for what it is. The new version should be fixing this.

.

Dropping it makes it stop working? I bang mine on the desk to restart it. Every once in a while it loses its "touch", a whack on the table and its good to go for another 15 minutes.

From all the responses I guess Lenovo x60 is the best bet.
