Anyone have any experience applying for this?

In particular, I'm in somewhat of a unique situation as I would like to apply to this from a research year, where by the time I receive the award I will be almost ready to return to my home institution. Anyone been in a similar situation?

I applied for it and got it years ago. Just follow the instructions, and hope you have a project the reviewers find interesting. Some of the other awards that were given in my year, I found myself going "who cares" to a lot of their projects. I'm sure many of them had a similar thought about my project.

Yup. I called and checked, and what I did was well within the rules. I ended up applying, and got the scholarship. Good luck!
