PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did your invite actually include the 22nd? Mine did not, but I know it was on their APPIC profile

Yeah. We are probably in different tracks. My cohort-mate just got an invite and she is in the child track. Some dates overlapped, but not some did not.

That makes sense! Mine says I am interviewing for multiple tracks so that could be why I have different dates. Thanks

What is the protocol to responding to an invite if they ask you to respond via a google docs form as Brown did? Is it still appropriate to respond to the email thanking them for the invite?

Ugh those Brown's just broke my heart. Really thought I was going to get that one... trying to remind myself to be very happy and excited about the ones I have but easy to fall into the downward spiral of negative self-comparison!!

I felt the same way about the Duke ones that came through earlier this week. Hang in there!!

Now seems like a good time for dog photos - Here is Bella my boxer and Pippin (Pip) my chihuahua.

I got an invite the other day and had to fill out a doodle poll for the interview date, but I still responded to the original email and said that I was thankful for the opportunity and will keep an eye out for a future email confirming my interview date.

Legit cuddling my dog and eating my body weight in licorice after seeing people post up about Brown and seeing my little email empty

Did they send a rejection? If not, maybe they will do another wave like some other sites? Their deadline isn't for another week-ish I think- you never know.

The last three years Brown has been a big mass email the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Rejections usually come out two days later. Easier for me to move on than to hope for a second wave - was doing that for WPIC and it didn't serve me well haha.

There are a couple sites from which I still have not received a rejection but they have definitely sent invites. I find it incredibly irritating because I do not see the point in waiting to send them. I can assume rejection with some confidence, but it's not the same thing.

Same. I have crossed UCSD off my list given how long it has been since an invitation has been received, but alas no rejection. I actually emailed WPIC because their notification date was the 21st (and it was my top choice) and they replied with a rejection but still have not sent them out I believe. It's frustrating. I would much rather know right away!
I feel the same way. I was waiting for Charleston Consortium, Kansas City and UCSD- there have been posts about invites but still no rejection. Especially frustrated that Kansas sent invites BEFORE their deadline. Given all that is put into this entire process, I feel strongly that sites should at least send a mass rejection email.

Okay I promise I’ll stop after this one.... but how can I resist posting this face! He makes everything better!

I’m with you...although I basically put a couple of sites on my “no official rejection but let’s be real” pile and then I got invites. One site was 2 weeks after and another was 2 days after. Who knows

I'm originally from New England and originally was really hoping to go back. But so far all my interviews are midwest/west coast. My friend just said this really poignantly, "Maybe it's not time to go back yet...there are other things to see and learn!" This is going to be my new motto and how I embrace the potential of moving to new exciting cities!! Also... I still have 3 more on east coast to hear from!

Don't promise otherwise you won't be able to take it back! I am guessing that the next two weeks (maybe three) are going to be notification heavy-hitters, so dogs are certainly welcome - speaking for myself, that is.

That sounds like very pleasant news - I'd love to have that happen. I do have a list of "notifications sent w/out rejection" so I guess we shall see. Just trying to be realistic - which is somewhat ridiculous because I don't even know what notification 'reality' on which to base my perceptions.

Did the "two weeks after" site align with a second wave that was noted on the thread?

How many rejections should I expect to get if I applied to 22 sites (I'm a PsyD student)? I'm feeling super down about this whole process rn. Currently at 3 rejections and 2 interviews.

Thats actually a great ratio! I was told the average APPIC applicant applies to about 15 and receives 5-6 interviews.

I have heard the same as clinicalpsychguy24 - 5-7 interviews is typical and many apply to 14-15 sites. Plenty of rejections are expected. Further, APPIC stats will show that a large portion of applicants match to one of their top three ranked sites. So hang in there, you'll be just fine.

You’re completely fine. You still have a LOT of sites to hear back from. And as the other person said, 5-6 invites for someone who applied to 15 sites is about average so you’re right on track. Don’t overthink it, just be patient (I know that’s hard!) and keep yourself busy.

thank you 🙂 🙂

ive applied to 18 and have a few more ones due in December. maybe will end around 22. I can really only afford to travel to maybe 7 to 10 so im hoping for at least 10 interviews. would be great if 3 can be skype given I did a few UCC's and they are mostly skype. I don't know where those numbers come from. But that is my "plan"

I sort of wish I hadn't taken a look at what last year's post-Thanksgiving Monday had in store for its applicants (correction: its applicants represented in the thread). Quite a combination.

Ya, its crazy knowing I should expect like at least 10 rejections. Pretty big blow to the ol ego its a good thing I started with an excess lol

I've been lucky and haven't received any rejections yet. But i'm sure it's happening. I've only heard from 2 sites so far, I guess I was just lucky in the order of my notifications!

Most of my sites haven't sent anything and must be ones that wait until after Thanksgiving. This might turn out good, or I might end up with a handful of rejections in a matter of a week. Very exciting itinerary, no doubt about it.

I’m having that moment of serious self doubt...I’m sure we all go through it but I legit told my husband today I’m learning a lot about baking between gbbo and baking to de-stress if all else fails I can be a baker? I’m hoping I’m not the only one suffering from extreme self doubt at the moment and excited yet terrified about the next few weeks...

Agreed. Even when rejections are expected, it's still a bit of a blow after working hard for many years. It creates an underlying sense of entitlement to be offered an opportunity to interview, apparently. But on the other hand, I'd like to think that the rejections we all receive are more so related to fit - there are definitely a couple sites to which I applied that are not as strong in terms of fit for me, given my interests and background.

Yes, I'm worried about an influx of rejections next week. Part of me wants to immerse myself in the phase II knowledge and the other half of me is doing some positive self talk... neither part is rational at this point.

ditto, not every site was a perfect fit so I won't be incredibly surprised for a few

Anyone else waiting on Children's National Medical Center? They seemed to do their invites over the phone, prior to Thanksgiving, in the past couple of years. Feel like I should mentally prepare for a rejection...

I have looked into the accelerated Phase II. It all comes down to the sites that still have open positions. But we are far from that point so we might as well hope that Phase I works out just fine! I have often heard "just let the process do its job."

While this thread doesn’t include the entire applicant pool, I’d be surprised if no one else who applied is represented on here. Maybe this year turned out differently in terms of application review. Hope for the best until you hear otherwise!

I am also waiting to hear back from them. Good luck!
Thanks! Good luck to you as well!

Thank you for being the voice of reason. I try not to look TOO much into how the dates lined up years prior, but it's hard when you have dates and can find patterns in those dates LOL. I'll try to take a breath =)

I looked at past Phase II and some of my top sites were actually on there....basically what that means is that if I don't get initial interviews to those sites I am a failure and will never be a psychologist!

Ha certainly not! Many top sites have ended up in Phase II for a variety of reasons - it all comes down to rankings and the algorithm. It is also possible that sites get funding and/or add an extra position late in the game. Sometimes sites just do not fill all of their slots in Phase I.

Haha yes I know this. This is just what my over stressed brain ruminates over at midnight! woohoo! Hoping this is a positive week for all of us.
