PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yay! Me too! I'm super excited about this one. Question for anyone who knows about this area, what would be the best way to travel to Geisinger? I see that Williamsport is technically the closest airport, however, it looks like very few airlines fly there and it costs a ton of money from the location I am flying in from (Denver). I see that Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York are all the closest major cities so I am thinking about flying into one of those cities (for cheaper airfare and better flight options) and then driving the rest of the way. Does anyone have insight into the best option? Many thanks!

*Edited because I put Baltimore twice 🙂

Harrisburg is also close (I think about 90 minutes). I know the area fairly well. Feel free to PM me.

I love you and BSM328 so much for this! Thank you for the encouraging comments! The uncertainty translates to fear for me so it’s very helpful to read about your experiences.

Of course! I was warned to stay off of SDN last year and I’m glad I didn’t. Everyone was so supportive and fun! I’m happy to pass it on ☺️

Hi there, current intern here! 🙂 (not at Boston Children's, just to clarify)

Just an FYI on the Boston Children's front, they were a late hold out last year, not notifying until like the second week of December! They also notified in waves (Friday and Monday) as a cohort-mate and I got invites on different days. Hang in there on this one!

And also, hoping everyone else can hang in there, too! I distinctly remember this time last year and thinking I was in the fifth circle of hell with the waiting game. It's super tough to be juggling a thousand things and also have this huge cloud of ambiguity and uncertainty hanging over your head. Just remember that there are tons of sites that have yet to notify, and many of the different tracks go out at different times. This waiting game piece will soon be over and then comes the interviews, which I (and others) found to be quite enjoyable! So make sure you're taking care of you, and take heart knowing that everything will work itself out and you'll each land exactly where you're meant to 🙂

Slannneyyyy!!!!!

Congrats!! I just got a rejection from there, haha. First response and first rejection!! Did anyone apply to the Child and Family Trauma Track (the one that is currently non-accredited)? I am wondering if that email will also come tonight or any time soon, or if I should assume my rejection to the behavioral/neuropsychology program also applies to the trauma track.
I applied to Child and Family Trauma, haven't heard anything yet. Hoping they'll be accredited, i know they had the tour/interview/accreditation etc in November...

Just got home from seeing my toughest client and am binging Final Table based on your recommendation and drinking a glass of wine.Taking the night off instead of working on my presentation for Wednesday. There should be some kind of word that combines internship anxiety and procrastination.

i see you Chatham! I'm from MA 🙂 (if that is Chatham, MA... if not... ignore me.)

My supervisor at my externship site told me about this forum/website. sort of in an off hand "have you heard of student doctor network? if not.... don't..." but i am SO GLAD I did! I'm more terrified and more relieved/relaxed. who knows how that's possible, but i definitely spent the past two hours reading through all 33 pages of messages so THAT'S normal behavior. Only a couple of us in my cohort are applying through APPIC and some of them have been sooooo secretive about it, even though we're all appling to different types of sites. oohh well. I've heard from 1 of my 15 sites, got an interview so I'm happy. Would just be interested in hearing from any of the other sites, preferably sooner than later....anyways, here are my rescue kittens, they like to sleep on each other. well, Xan (short for Xanax because she was super calm at the shelter, then brought her home and turns out she needs one) likes to sleep on Adam (short for Adam Driver, because he has a long face like Adam Driver).

I get a lot of comfort from this forum, so y'all are awesome and we got this!

I was wondering if anyone has gotten a rejection from the Durham VA? It seems like they've done both invites/rejections on their notification date in past years, but radio silence for me.

I'm in the same spot as you with them. Not sure what to make of it.

Oh that is just too cute. 😍:joyful:

What breed is he? Sooooo cute!!!

I live for this question! I got him from a rescue, so all I initially knew was that a volunteer at the shelter said “I think he’s a corgi mix” and then wrote that as his breed on all his adoption/vet records. People asked me (and speculated about) his breed constantly, and I was super curious too, so I requested a doggy DNA test for my birthday. I polled folks on what kind of mix they think he is (ya know, nerd ****). He was about 9 months old, pretty small for weighing 30 lbs, satellite dishes for ears, and endless energy. Common responses were some combo of black lab, border collie, corgi, German shepherd, boxer, Aussie shepherd... but nobody got the right combo because it’s SO weird. The DNA test said he is 25% American Staffordshire terrier, 25% German Shepherd, 12.5% Australian cattle dog, 12.5% Pomeranian (???), and 25% mixed sporting breeds (aka mutt).

I know literally nobody asked for that story and it’s not at all what this forum is for but I can’t sleep for the 3rd night in a row (help) and I needed a distraction so...here we are. Anywayyy, I’d better get back to panicking now - byeeeeeee!

Congrats! I got an invite there too!!

I believe their brochure said interview notifications by the 27th but rejections by December 15. So I assume no invite on the 27th = rejection.

Ugh, I just had to tell a site I really loved that I couldn’t visit on my confirmed date because I was unable to find a flight that would get me into the city in time. They offered a phone interview. Does this completely ruin my chances with them?

Could you fly in the night before?

I have an interview scheduled for the previous day. When confirming the date for this interview, I thought I would be able to fly in that evening. However, since I lose time from flying east, AND there are no direct flights, I was unable to locate any flights that would get me there in time. :-(

This is my worst nightmare. It’s impossible not to have side-by-side interviews and you’re a slave to what’s available! It’s hard to know this when you’re confirming dates. Hopefully the site will be understanding. I often think that genuine enthusiasm will come through.

What are people’s thoughts about cancelling an interview after they have already scheduled it?

One of my top choices offered an interview on the same date as another program, which I am less interested in. Neither offer Skype or alternate dates. I don’t want to burn any bridges but also don’t want to loss out on my top choice.

I think you need to make the decision that's best for you! If neither site offers alternative dates or interview methods, but one site is your top choice, I think you have your answer. They won't be happy but I'm sure this has happened before. The only reason to not cancel the interview in favor of the better site would be if you planned to apply there for post-doc or another position later on.

Still nothing from Yale BMED. Officially gone bonkers....

Though only saw rejections from this track on the forum yesterday??

I agree with NeuroPsyched, I may end up in a similar situation and my advisor, who was our DCT for a number of years, agrees with that approach.

I would do what's best for you and cancel the interview with the site you are less interested in. Just say a conflict came up. I am sure this happens and people understand.

I think no news is good news at this point... me and my cohort got rejections in separate batches yesterday. I would think you're, at the very least, on the "maybe" list.

Has anyone received a rejection from Samaritan? Saw some invites went out last night but I’ve not heard either way yet...I realize time difference may also play a role here. I just really felt good about this application!

I am! Haven’t heard from them. What are you confused about?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

Confused because they would call people the last few years on 11/17 - I can't imagine NO ONE on here got calls. I know it's a competitive site so I wouldn't be surprised if I got a rejection on 12/2 (not self-depricating just being a realist) but it's concerning that NO ONE got calls.

I’m feeling the same way and also wondered about the time difference. I imagine we will hear one way or the other today. I had some sad feels yesterday lol

It looks like two years ago they sent out emails on 12/4; whereas, I know they made calls last year on 11/17. I am sure it’s maybe delayed by a bit. They do seem to cut their interviewee pool down to a small group, which may take longer? We will see, I suppose.

I was also waiting for you to hear, since you'd mentioned it was one you were anxiously awaiting. What I can say is that the email I received was quite personalized, so perhaps invites are taking longer to send out? Fingers crossed for you.
