PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone else realizing they aren’t nearly as strong of an applicant they thought they were? 🙁

It's easy to feel this way... but I think it's more accurate to say that there are a lot more OTHER strong applicants than we thought there were... it's like the olympics. Everyone who makes it there is an ultimate badass, but there are a plethora of other ultimate badasses to compete with. But that doesn't detract from the worth of any individual Olympic athlete, amiright?

Yes, I definitely agree with that notion. I keep reminding myself that we are all basically in an elite group of people (less than 2% of the country even gets a Ph.D., and that is including every single field, not just psychology) so the chances of always being the best of the best in an already insanely competitive group is going to be slim. Good news though is that we are all qualified and capable or we wouldn't even be at this point. I received a nicely worded rejection email this morning that basically stated that the training committee was impressed with my application, thought I was a great candidate, and believes I will excel wherever I land, but they simply had more people apply than they could possibly interview.

Any ideas which sites don’t send rejections? I see a handful if mine sent invites about 2 weeks ago. In trying to plan interviews, I am trying to hold spots in case they come through, but it would be so much easier to cross them off if they have a habit of not rejecting people.

All sites who are members of APPIC sign a contract that includes a requirement to send out rejection notices (in phase I) in addition to invites. So if a site doesn’t send you a rejection consider it a blessing in disguise because you probably don’t want to be at a site that isn’t organized well enough to know what they’ve agreed to do.

I appreciate this post, as it shows a true and thorough commitment to the process as a Training Director. In your experience, is there utility in a 'maybe' list of applicants or a list of applicants to which one would not immediately send rejection notifications? I have often wondered whether or not there exists a likely scenario in which this type of list would be useful, or if certain sites send rejections later than invitations because they are less important (in terms of scheduling, for example).

Eh, more like 50-100/year. And the trend has been towards fewer withdrawals in recent years. Probably correlated with the increase in positions.

426 in 2012, 274 in 2016, 266 in 2017, 184 in 2018. It's never been 50-100, at least in recent years. Hopefully it does trend that way.

The main point was that applicants do drop out. Unfortunate/unexpected things happen on both the program and student side of things each year.

Hmm, interesting, the Match statistics and the applicant survey are fairly discrepant in their numbers. I stand corrected on that point. I forgot to account for a certain percentage of people who ignore the applicant survey.

Didnt see Neuro track specifically for this one posted, so thought I’d share

I seriously expected to get a rejection from this site because I have no experience with either psychodynamic therapy or assessment, so...not sure how this happened but I'll take it.

Rejection from West Haven VA (SMI Track) yesterday & Yale (Forensic Addiction Track) this morning.

Congrats on these invites! I'm trying to figure out if Semel did a second wave with this or if the track to which you applied was one that had not been informed.

I received this invitation earlier, before I was lurking on here! Sorry if that was confusing.

Hi All!

Current intern here. Just wanted to send some words of encouragement!!! Reading all of these posts reminded me the truth in, “You end up where you are meant to be.” I remember hearing that over and over and being like Ok I get itttt - but it’s so true. Deep breaths and go do something fun!

Are people still getting notifications from Geisinger neuro track or am I just in the rejected pile? 🙁

Feeling pretty bummed about it.

Congrats! I’m hoping for this one for Neuro. I actually don’t even recall if I had to choose General and then specify the Neuro major or if it was a track. Oh well, I guess we shall see.

Current intern here as well, and I couldn't agree with this more! As someone who got very few interviews last year, I had a lot of self-doubt and really, really struggled. But I ended up matching at a fantastic site and I'm loving my time here. I know it's easier to say this from the other side, but truly, que sera sera. (But in the interim, I'm happy to be a virtual shoulder to cry on for anyone who wants to vent via direct message!)

: sanity? what is that?

Yay! Me too! I'm super excited about this one. Question for anyone who knows about this area, what would be the best way to travel to Geisinger? I see that Williamsport is technically the closest airport, however, it looks like very few airlines fly there and it costs a ton of money from the location I am flying in from (Denver). I see that Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York are all the closest major cities so I am thinking about flying into one of those cities (for cheaper airfare and better flight options) and then driving the rest of the way. Does anyone have insight into the best option? Many thanks!

*Edited because I put Baltimore twice 🙂

I'm in the same boat, but I'm pretty sure they just have a general, pcmh, or geriatric track with neuro rotation options.

I love you and BSM328 so much for this! Thank you for the encouraging comments! The uncertainty translates to fear for me so it’s very helpful to read about your experiences.

My friend is a current intern there and she would tell you there’s no good/easy way. When she travels, she usually drives to Philly’s airport. The Baltimore airport is about the same distance, and I’d also check Newark. There are other small airports around there, but I imagine they’re similarly expensive.

Did any other US applicants apply for Canadian sites? I applied for 2, but truthfully don’t fully understand how difficult it would be attend them. It seems like there wouldn’t be any issue post-internship, but that also is something I need to look into further.

Haha it does seem hard to get to! Thank you for the helpful info 🙂 Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something that an insider might know about.
