I'm posting this partly for advice! We're supposed to call someone on Monday at 11 am which happens to be smack dab in the middle of an assessment I am doing with my supervisor in the room. I really don't want to miss making the call because I can't do one of the dates and I'm afraid that's the one I would get stuck with. Is anyone familiar with the phone call process at this site (or other sites that do something similar)? My fear is that even if I talk to my supervisor and she lets me step out and call at exactly the right time, I will probably end up losing out to someone else for being the first caller. But I can't just sit and wait while redialing because of the assessment. And it feels pretty last minute to try to see if the patient can reschedule. Any advice?

Personally, if the situation is one in which your supervisor is available to continue the assessment, I would have that conversation in advance and call as close to 11AM as possible. If it takes numerous attempts, so be it (there may be several people fielding calls) - the time-sensitive nature of this internship stuff is neither your fault nor is it ideal for anyone. Hopefully your supervisor would understand that, particularly if you have a strong preference/need for specific date(s). If the situation is more complicated than that, it will not hurt to talk it out with your supervisor and still aim to call as soon as you are available to do so. But that's just me! Either way, I'm sure it will work out for you - congrats on the invite!

Thank you! Now that I've had some time to slow down and breathe a bit, I think this is very good advice.

Agree with this. As a psychologist, I can say that I know I would be understanding of a practicum student needing to step out for that. Internship is of the utmost importance and we know this because we remember. The supervisor was going to be present anyway so it’s not a situation in which you’re asking them to switch their schedule.

In other news, I loved this little tidbit from the brochure of a VA I applied to in a cold state, bless that training director/committee.

A note about interviewing in [cold state]: All of the interviews take place in winter, and there is a good deal of walking involved. So we heartily recommend warm clothing and sturdy, comfortable footwear, including boots, if the forecast calls for snow

Also, Kudos to @NeuroFLAIR for helping me keep up with the busy thread today. Please, everyone, feel free to let me know if I'm missed things.

Well..I checked my email this morning and saw nothing from them 🙁

Yes, just got an interview offer today:

Official Site Name: University of Chicago
Date Invitation Received: 11/15/2019
Method of Invitation (Phone call, personal/mass email, snapchat): Email (mass I think)
Specialty Track or Site (e.g., for consortiums): Adult/Health
Interview dates: 1/3, 1/10, 1/17, & 1/24

Has anyone heard from the Child/Pediatric Psychology track? I've seen invites for the other three.

I think(?) I was waitlisted at University of Chicago Medicine for pediatric neuropsychology. Just received a mass e-mail about five minutes ago..yes, on a Saturday...saying they would keep my application on file in case an interview slot opens up.

I'm chalking this one as a definite rejection, but I have never heard of this before. Any thoughts?

Just received this as well for the Child/Pediatric Psychology track. Pretty bummed. =/

I’ve never heard of “waitlisting” interviews for APPIC’s process when there are so many applicants to choose from. That sounds like a “nicer” but vague way of saying no because everyone selected for an interview will interview, leaving no slots open for the waitlisted. The only way waitlisted folks would benefit is if someone very suddenly dropped out of interviewing for personal reasons, which is extremely rare, and that only opens up one slot on the waitlist.

Bummer! I personally think this is poor practice by sites when they already have phase two as a backup if needed.

Fingers crossed you hear something soon! Notifications do seem to be going out later this year in general, though that could just be my anxiety distorting my sense of time...

I am a little relieved to learn that other people haven't heard from U Chicago Med either.

I think this may be related to the fact that Thanksgiving is about a week later (the 28th) than it was last year (the 22nd). Sites may not be feeling as much pressure to get the invitations out as quickly since there is a later start to the holiday season.

ohhh that makes a lot of sense.

Nothing from U Chicago here so gonna move this one to the “rejection” list... Congrats to everyone who got an invite!!

I have noticed everything is later this year so, I am hoping this trend stops!

Agreed. I hope the later holiday results in more sites attempting to finish reviews prior to it. However, so many people are reviewing these extensive applications on their own time outside of major obligations, so it's difficult to guess what will happen.

This used to be pretty rare, anecdotally, it does appear to be happening more often. This increase in canceled interviews appear to coincide with the number of spots outpacing number of applicants. I'd be interested to hear from other faculty if this has been happening somewhat more often in the past few years.

Does anyone know what is up with UF Health sending out some invitations but that other people have not heard back either way? I know some of you are talking about waitlisting but it seems early to already to be doing that since there notification by date is listed as Dec. 11.

Ditto, I would love to know where I stand with them too. Perhaps it will be another rejection? 🙂 I look at this like the lottery; every time I lose, I tell myself at least I'm helping the public education system.

I'm glad you can view it more positively than I can :dead:

Either they're doing rolling invites or they're sending out their rejections later. It's actually fairly typical for a site to send out interview notifications on one day and then rejections at a later date. Many sites will also notify applicants well in advance of their notification by date, and a few will notify all applicants on that date. Good luck!

I'm not sure what other sites are doing, although I thought waitlists are still generally not used. Our site doesn't do waitlists because it's pretty rare for an applicant to back out of an interview - and if it happens, it's pretty late in the game.

Still pretty rare, 1-3 people in recent years. But it used to pretty much be never. We will bring someone out of the "just missed" pile for an interview if they can make it.

That is curious! I am feeling this way with one site. Have seen three invites go up, but haven't seen a rejection yet, and notification date is not until the week of the 11th for December.

I was also being sarcastic lol! IDK...maybe I've become apathetic to this. I am getting old, or at least older than most of the people in my cohort. I want to press the unpause button and resume life. That's how I feel. I'm sure someone will chime in and tell me not to think that way, but as it is now, that's my automatic thought. Being off the job market for so long is rough. Grad school takes up so much time. I will admit that I didn't balance my time well in the past 4 years; I focused on my studies more than having fun. That's my own fault, but it is what it is and it contributes to how I am feeling about this process. I think it's fair to say we all worked our butts off to do well, and we don't want to see the ball drop at this stage of our training. So...rather than think this, I try to use humor as my defense mechanism.

I had a dream that I had a dream that I got an interview invitation to Western State Hospital in my inbox. When I woke up from the dream, I had an interview invitation from Western State Hospital! Then I posted about it on here. Then I woke up from that dream and realized none of it had happened, haha!

I say this with absolutely no authority, but I think some sites that have a ton of applicants might review in batches and send out invites as they find people they want. So that might explain why some people haven’t been contacted yet - their applications might still be in the unread pile. It’s how I might approach having to read hundreds of applications - like a TA who grades one stack of papers and leaves another stack for later

Rejection from U Chicago Med this morning. Ah well. Onwards...

This whole “paying attention to my phone every single second” thing is seriously the most stressful part of the process so far. Wish sites could coordinate and send out notifications in like a two hour window each day or something.

Same, but Trauma Track

I'm staying sane by distracting with data cleaning for my dissertation...which is somehow less painful than checking my email every 15 minutes.

For some reason I totally spaced and didn't see that I needed to include 2 assessment reports in my application to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH) at Stanford and Children’s Health Council. Luckily, I got an email from the director of training on 11/16 asking for them. I guess I figure if my application was a total wash they wouldn't even ask for the reports, right?
