APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Last rejection from Northwell Health Staten Island University Hospital just came in. Really sad about that one. :arghh: I needed like 10 more pediatric neuropsych evals to meet their expectations and it's here at home too, which would have been nice. (Sigh). This process has aged me for sure!

Would any of you amazing, talented, kind, supportive, empathic, symmetrical, and genius human beings who have reached out to sites whose interview notification deadline has passed inquiring about your status be willing to post how you worded your email so as not to irritate over-inundated TDs while still showing interest? (Wow. Longest grammatically correct run-on sentence EVER! #winning)
Good evening Dr. ______,

I am reaching out to inquire about the status of my application for the clinical psychology predoctoral internship program at _______. Your program materials state that you notified applicants _________ regarding their interview status. I have not received any correspondence from your site since submitting my materials on _________. Could you provide any further information pertaining to the status of my application? I believe your site is an excellent fit for my internship training goals and would love an opportunity to interview.

I feel like this may be too public a forum for some to feel comfortable discussing negative experiences people have had or know about others experiencing at certain sites. But that person who posted about University of Minnesota's internship having a toxic work culture & hx of sexual harassment was so helpful.

How are people inquiring about red flags with the prospective interns / staff they meet when interviewing? It's risky for interns to share any red flags since word could come back to their TDs about them sharing it... What's the best way to assess for red flags like toxic work culture, harassment, ethical violations, serious programatic disorganization, or generally something being really different in reality than it's presented on paper?

Anyone know of any major red flags at any other sites? Not just on the level of poor fit with a specific intern, but more in the realm of major red flag issues that are likely to be unresolved by the time our cohort's internships begin? No pressure to answer this obviously since you may be uncomfortable doing so for very good reasons, but I figure it is worth explicitly putting out there as an ask.

I don't know how helpful this is, but I've heard to take note of sites where they do not offer the opportunity for you to directly communicate with current interns privately (i.e., without training faculty present). I'm also under the impression that when given the opportunity to speak privately with current interns, they are encouraged to speak openly about their experiences. If you get the sense they are withholding information, I'd count that as a red flag of sorts.

It's a tough one, as you are generally only hearing one side of the story, and about one particular time period. Sometimes problems are an isolated experience, sometimes it's programmatic. Some programs are toxic, some applicants are toxic. Speak to the current interns, sometimes they will also provide contact info for past interns. See how people interact with each other. We're behavioral professionals, use that training.

I heard from someone who interviewed last year at Metropolitan State Hospital (SoCal) that when asked about speaking with the current interns, the person was told "we used to do that but we found that it didn't go well" (whatever that means). Take that for what it's worth from someone who heard it from someone else. But it was enough for me to avoid applying to the site.

I saw some people heard from University of Michigan CAPS (both interview invites and rejections). I think the deadline was the 14th and I have still not heard anything from this site. I was curious if you all think I should email the TD or wait a little longer to see if they contact me. I am anticipating a rejection, but I just want to know so I can be close to being done with this leg of the process

I'd agree with using your training as a behavioral health professional. I'd also encourage anyone to ask questions about how the site responds to feedback from trainees, if changes have been made based on feedback, etc. Asking for contact information from previous interns is also helpful.

Email them. No harm in asking about your status.

Hello everyone! If anyone else got an interview to the Pacific Islands VA and has done the online interview (and willing to discuss it), I would love to know how long it will take! Trying to plan out an afternoon 🙂

Just in case anyone else needs this info: I emailed the TD at Advocate Family Care Network in Illinois about my application status since their notification date says 12/31 (I assumed it was a typo). They responded saying that they are still reviewing some of the applications and should get back to all applicants very soon.

Nothing from University of Washington counseling center here either. I don’t think anyone has heard from them yet.

Anyone hear from CSU- San Marcos? Their deadline was yesterday. Oy vey!

Yes, cal state san marcos offered me an interview on Friday!

Me too! I'm shook, I had this one in the "probably a rejection" pile. See you there, maybe!

I am also still waiting on this site. It says on APPIC that the notification date is 12/17, so I'm hopeful that we hear back tomorrow.

Oh thank you! I must have missed that - I was more focused on them offering invites as they reviewed. So I'll patiently wait!

Hey guys! Does anyone know of any kind of online space where interns (past or current) either discuss or rank their internship experiences at specific sites? Either on SDN or somewhere else? Kind of like how employees rate their job experiences on Glass Door or Indeed, but I'm not interested in pull-quotes that are cherry-picked for inclusion on site brochures or websites.

Currently in a position where I'm having to choose one site over another for an interview and both sites are quite similar on paper. Because I'm a huge "vibe" person and can't experience both physically in an interview setting or over the phone, it'd be helpful to go off of someone else's experience.

Rejection from San Diego VA.

Last one I need to hear from is Indian Health Board of Minneapolis. Anyone heard from them?

Hi all!

I know someone mentioned they already heard from Johns Hopkins Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress. Is anyone else still waiting to hear from them?
I'm still waiting! I just emailed the TD to inquire. I'll message here when I hear back 😉.
I’m still waiting too and I also emailed the TD earlier today. Will update if I hear anything!

Thank you!! And thanks @DialecticPhD. Hopefully we hear soon ugh

I’ll also add that there is a CFT (child and family therapy) track through the main KKI program, which is separate from the trauma track positions with the CCFTS program. The former has definitely sent out updates, but I don’t think the CCFTS has... though of course I could be wrong!

Thank you for this update! I was also wondering if this was a typo and considering reaching out to them.

Has anyone received a rejection from Napa yet? I know they sent out invites already so I wonder what is taking the rejection batch so long!

I haven't done this, but I know 5-6 people who have done the online "interview" over the past 4 years. Most of them said it took all of the allotted time. They comfortably finished just in time or with 5ish minutes to spare.

After that last rejection email, totally took myself out for pizza. Might even go to bed tonight and NOT wake up at 2am to check my phone for an email cuz my waiting is finally over (so many rejections for neuro, ugh!). When it's all over for ya'll, self-care my friends! Take a shower, feed yourself, take a nap, go for a special coffee, go for a walk, build a snowman, or sit still away from your phone for a few minutes of quiet breathing. This has been A LOT and we all know it.

Crossing my fingers that we all land somewhere great!!!

So ended up with 5 total interviews, which I feel like is low for my program. What have you guys been told about how many interviews is a “safe” number?

My program’s DCT, who also developed a competitive internship site of which she is the current TD/all around badass, told us repeatedly this past semester that 4-7 is the average range of interview invitations successfully-matched applicants have received over the past few years. 5 is a totally great number! Proud of you, boo

I have a grand total of 8 sites, all neuro, with one site where I am interviewing for both neuro and rehab tracks. I think overall I am happy; out of those 8, 3 programs I consider my top picks. I applied to 5 "top pick" programs, so, 3 out of 5 isn't bad. One of them is local, thus, it would be nice to match with them, not just due to geography, but, it's a fantastic program that I did practicum at and found it be a perfect fit for what I want. I am a bit bummed that after applying to 33 programs, I got 8 interviews. Oh well. I now know to not apply to as many VAs for post-doc applications as I did for internship. One of the TDs I spoke to previously weeks ago told me to focus my efforts on places that resemble or are similar to my practicum experiences. I think it's good advice, and it makes sense. However, I did end up getting two neuropsych track VA interviews.

Wow...impressive! Teach me your ways...lol... 😀

I applied to 20 neuro sites, but all the top sites in the United States (because I'm stupid) and only got 5 interviews. I chalk this up to my being an optimist and hoping that they wanted me as much as I wanted them; however, I did NOT realize how many applications they received from people just like me who did just a wee bit more. Talk about disheartening, but when I reached out to the site directors, they were all very nice and encouraged me to look at them for post-doctoral work. I am sure they were just filling the air, but I figure if I get some really good experience, I can be competitive too.

My sites: 3 neuro VA's, 2 neuro rehab facilities

(I just want to match with a site that will be a good fit)

I will also be wearing a dark purple velour suit to my interviews, because - why not? 🙄
