APPIC Interview Invitation Thread (2021)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm embarrassed to even say the amount of times I've rushed to answer my phone.. only to find out its a sus robot talking about my cars extended warranty........ 😏
I got like so many emails from YouTube yesterday about changes to their policies and after the 4th one I just about threw my phone across the room!

Thank you for sharing! And congrats!! I hope maybe that means I am on the list?...or else I guess I would have gotten the rejection email? but who knows! AHHH this process is so stressful!
I’ll be watching the thread to see how it goes for you! Good luck & I think positive thoughts are necessary. I’d assume no rejection email is a great sign!

I received an invite but it was a personal email so I'd think they probably are still coming!

Hey everyone has anyone heard from programs who specifically take PhD students. I’m doing a PsyD in Neuro and applied to two programs that seem to only take PhDs from what I saw in their brochure but I took a risk and still applied. Any feedback is appreciated!

Not sure about programs that exclusively take PhD over PsyD, but do know some that prefer it. You can always check the APPIC listings, but I have only see exclusions for school psych and EdDs listed there.

I have seen strong research sites address this in their brochures. However, they are few and far between. I am applying predominately to VAs and AMHs. I attended a panel for how to get into a VA with training directors from some of the most prestigious VAs across the country. This question came up and they generally stated that they try to draft evenly across PhD and PsyD when they rank applicants. However, the match process sometimes skews their results by giving them more of one or the other. So I wouldnt place too much stock in how many you are seeing that go to a given site.

Is anyone noticing that the application numbers to most sites are higher than previous years?? I have had a handful of sites tell us that they are seeing an influx of applications. I wonder if this is connected to the Argosy debacle where those students are now getting back on track and applying, or is the pendulum beginning to swing back to fewer sites available?? I know this is completely anecdotal information given I only applied to 15 sites, but I was wondering if anyone else is pondering the same??

Could be both. Tough to tell until we get the application numbers later in the season. As to the latter, some sites may be reducing number of slots due to massive budget shortfalls. I'm aware of a couple instances of this locally, but not sure how widespread this is nationally.

For those that applied to neuropsych sites..... how many sites did you apply to? I am worried that I did not apply to enough given the potential challenges of this cycle. I applied to 16 (all neuro).

I applied to 15 all neuro. We were strongly advised not to apply to more than 15. That being said I only applied to a couple I considered reaches

I applied to 18 (16 with specific peds neuro tracks, 2 with no tracks but sig peds neuro training).

I only applied to 12, which in retrospect may have been a bad idea given that I limited myself to almost only AMCs, but that's what I wanted soooo... Fingers crossed!

Might be due to COVID bringing mostly virtual interviews. Most applicants will not have to travel for interviews this year. Some of that money saved could be used for additional applications.

15. We were strongly encouraged to apply to no more than 15. The research shows that there is no statistically significant increase in match rate between individuals who apply to 11-15 (I think, 91%) sites versus 16-20 (I think, 92%). I've heard that's also why it costs more to apply to the 16th (and all subsequent) site(s). The important part is balancing reach sites with other less competitive sites. It's still early and I keep being told 1) rejections often come first and 2) match rates are nearly 100% if you get 7-8 interviews, so that's my goal. Hang in there!

There are only two sites I have heard general inflation/deflation info from. One was a rejection from Dartmouth-they had 169 applicants--super inflated from years before. My prac site that has a neuro track had fewer applications-they didn't discuss exact numbers or anything more. Just mentioned they had less applicants than previous years. It seems incredibly variable.
