APPIC Interview Invitation Thread (2021)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an interview at the University of Washington for the behavioral medicine track. Someone in my cohort has heard from them as well for an interview. I'm not sure if they have sent out any other emails though.

I heard back from UTK counseling center on 12/4 for an interview.
Thank you! I am marking UTK as a loss and still holding out for UW (bc I didn't apply for the behavioral track). I appreciate the replies!

Bring on the Bay Pines notifications!! This is my last site to hear from. I hope you all are doing great at your interviews! I have finished two thus far. I cant help thinking about the wonderful doctoral candidates I see on screen, and how they could potentially be in my next cohort!! :soexcited:
Their date is tomorrow, but hopefully they let us all know today 🙂 This is also my last site to hear from.

@SarahpeuticAlliance Someone heard back from UIC?? Idk what this means for us

For those that landed Jackson interviews, did you receive a confirmation email yet regarding the group session date you selected?

Have you also heard about individual interviews? Specifically for the pediatric behavioral track

Hi, at this point where invitations for interviews are pretty set. I would like to ask what are your thoughts on matching or giving non-APA internship sites a try? Will that affect post-doc and licensure?

It all depends on what state you're in and what your program requires. I want to practice in a state that requires an APA accredited internship for licensure or they make you jump through A LOT of hoops to prove your site was APA-equivalent. And even then there are no guarantees. I, personally, wouldn't do it in my situation. It would be a last ditch effort to match and even then, it might just be safer to take an extra year to strengthen your application and try again for APA accredited sites. There are tons of smaller, less competitive sites that are accredited. There's no reason why anyone should be unable to match at one if that is their goal.

It will definitely affect licensure. Many states will not license you without an accredited internship. And, if you do get licensed with a non-accredited internship, many jobs will not hire you unless you completed an accredited internship. Don't close off so many career avenues this early.

I agree with other comments, there is no way I’d complete an non-accred site. No way no how. It is too risky and closes too many doors for career options, and I wouldn’t want that barrier this early on.

Thanks for the info. I'll plan to email them tomorrow morning if I don't hear anything today (since their listed notification date is today). I'll count it as a "Nah sis" tho. 🤣

Don't give up! Pace University's notification day was 12/7 and they've still not sent rejections. Someone checked in on here and they said they're still going through the process. They could be a site like some that are inviting more people after the new year for interviews.

I was notified of an interview by Duke on 12/8.

I got my individual interview set up for my track but haven’t heard back for the group session

It can happen. I would say it is less a matter of willingness than ability to reschedule. Getting faculty together can be like herding cats. Smart and wonderful and accomplished cats. But cats nonetheless.
I had a site offer a seriously abridged interview of 30 minutes instead of 3 hours. I imagine because they couldn’t find the extra time to do a tour, Q&A etc. Better than nothing but it means it’ll be harder to make an impression and get a good feel for the site.

I think it depends on the state you live in and your goals. I have a supervisor who went to a CPA accredited site instead of apa and she is amazing. I believe some board certifications require APA internship so if that’s what you want you should look at those requirements. I believe VAs also want APA internship but I’m not 100% sure.

I would caution against applying to this site as it is not accredited. I have noticed that a lot of sites with later deadlines like this are not APA accredited.

Would you mind sharing? I got an interview at Hershey medical center and now that I’ve heard from multiple people that they were mean I’m getting nervous about meeting with them!
The email they sent me was harsh too. They said we had a lot of applications and told me even if they interviewed me my chances of getting in would be low. It’s harsh and sounds snobby they could’ve left that part out.
I don’t know what their process of selecting interns is like. But go in with a good mindset you will do great.

Has anyone who got an interview at Canandaigua VA received any confirmation of your scheduled interview day? My email has been funky the last few days so I want to double check.

Same here. Knew it was coming but sad to see that one go. Their loss!

It will be a strange feeling when I have no more emails to anticipate. I hope people will keep using this forum to share experiences of interviews -- weird questions, tech issues, bizarre vibes from a site, etc.!

Here's my share: I had an interview, but I couldn't put away my cat because she will throw a literal hissy fit. Everything was going fine until she decided to gallop across the living room and yowl like a banshee. I tried to keep up my best poker face and pretend that I heard nothing on my end lol 🤣
