I'm a huge one. I've used Apple/Mac computers since the 3rd grade, in school no less. That would be about 1982. Pretty sad about the Steve Jobs resignation. I think the common thought is, his health is clearly, really failing... 🙁

Currently, when I gather up all the Mac products in my house...kind of crazy...I don't think, aside from say Nike or Reebok, any other brand comes close...that says something about their successes in both marketing and product quality/fun...

I am. And the more I read from SJ, the more I like him. If you read the pundits, he sounds like an Ass, but you read his thoughts, he makes a lot of sense.

I bought the original iPhone for 600$. I haven't ever replaced it though - and just on Sat, I dropped it and the screen broke. I've dropped it 100x (with no case by the way) and it always managed to not be broken. sigh...

I love my macbook and iMac (just had the logic board replaced).

My bro - who lead me to Apple - has recenlty gone back to Windows. Apparently, windows 7 is really stable, and it copies all the great things on a Mac (expose, grab, etc) and most machines are SO much cheaper. I wonder if they added print to PDF, which seems like a no brainer...but so are most things that apple does well and windows takes years before it finally copies mac.

To me, Apple is like a really really hot chick that treats you like crap. You tolerate it because they look and perform so well.

I understand the anomosity that people feel - software developers and users seem limited and apple at times seems like they are just looking for the money - but what makes them enfuriating also makes them so wonderful. Everything works very well. The app store is so simple and convenient.

Many people I know that went with the android OS, now say they wish they had an iPhone. (I know there are plenty that wouldn't say this....)

AT&T does suck balz though.

well, yeah, i've dropped my iphone many times. i use the mophie juice pack so even when that thing hits i cringe a bit. you can always pay to replace that glass, a classic first model is nice. BUT, when you see speed difference on iphone 4, (startup alone) you'll be nice and happy. 🙂

agree 100% with hot chick issue. they are so fun, but you give up a lot.

SJ, has a biography coming out soon i think, he participated so hopefully itll be accurate, and i look forward to it.

lastly, android. when i look at them, they are really great graphically. certainly animated lock and home pages rock. and the games look amazing. if i weren't so bred into my MAC OS, and all my files and Itunes etc, i'd THINK about switching. but i probably never will. as for computers, i dont ever intend to go back to Windows. blech.

re Flash. SO THAT'S WHY. i will say, man, how annoying to have a GREAT web experience, and then get to a page that requires flash and you're in the stone age. its a pissing contest. i hope apple comes around.
 
I'm on my third Ipod. This past fall I bought my second mac (imac and a macbook white). And I'm looking forward to buying my first iphone this fall. I hope I can wait until the iphone 5 comes out.

I'm a bit worried about where apple is headed with their computers though. I hope their success with the ipad doesn't cause to slowly abandon their computer line.

The thing I like about the mac's is that the apple language is hard to write a virus for. MANY more virus programs for windows than any other apple products. Keeps your mac happier. They are built supa solid. Also the mac pro is soooooooooo easy to upgrade if you like DIY jobs. You can save a pretty penny.

I love my iPhone and iPad, and I would own a macbook if they weren't so darn expensive..

I didn't realize the flash decision was quite so in depth, but I will say I understand a lot of it. I had a droid before my current iphone, and while it would definitely play flash, it was absolutely clunky and almost unusable.

It's my understanding that the bolded is nothing more than an urban myth. There are most certainly more virii for windows than MacOS, but it's always been told to me that it's simply a matter of "what's more likely". The writers of these virii want to reach the maximum amount of people they can, and when evaluating which operating system is more likely to access their particular virus, they always lean towards windows, which has (or at least did) the majority of the market share.

What I do know is that I have a bunch of PC's that run slower than a turtle on a half pint of moonshine. Very frustrating. I've owned a Mac Air for 3 yrs. and it runs just as fast as when I first received it. Whatever it is (apple language or not)... I like the MAC a lot more than any PC I've ever owned. A true convert.
 
Sad to hear about Jobs. I love Apple, got a macbook and an iPod touch. Wish the list were longer but I'm not an anesthesiologist yet. As long as they continue to make functionally superb products, I hope to never buy a PC again.

I had to switch from my iPhone 3GS to an android phone when I started residency and I can say I thoroughly hate my new phone (Evo4G). It feels far less polished and less user friendly than the iPhone. It constantly has crap running in the background that wears out the battery (even with the AppKiller). The android market place feels more like a "Black Market" because the quality of the apps is so far inferior to those seen on the App Store. Sure, more are free but thats because they are made by 3rd party users who don't know what they are doing, they are super buggy, and crash all the time. I am counting down the days until the iPhone 5 and am then making the switch.

I think now that Jobs isn't CEO anymore, he may have more time to play a more active role in guiding the development of products which I feel has slipped over the last year (Anyone remember the last iPod shuffle disaster, or the iPhone4 antenna problems?)

I switched to Mac my 3rd year of medical school when I was completely fed up with PC's and now I'll never go back (unless Mac starts making crap products too).

I don't have the cojones to open up my MacBook pro, even to stick in some extra memory. As far as that aspect to the MACs, I'm WAY behind the curve. I know it's simple. An old writing partner of mine used to do it in 30 secs flat, but I still refuse. I feel like I touch something wrong, BOOM, all data gone. Can't risk that.

I hear ya. Back your stuff up on an external drive just for giggles....

Check out some of the tutorials online. Seriously. You will see how easy the guts of the Mac Pro really is. They are like 3 minutes long and show you everything about upgrading the Mac Pro. One of it's exceptional features is it's simple layout and the ability to upgrade with little to no hassle.

I don't know much about the laptops. I wouldn't dare open up my mac air.

I converted 4 years ago. MacBook Pro. Best technology decision I ever made. Love my IPOD. Love my IPAD. Got the IPAD when it came out so qualified for the 30 bucks a month for unlimited use which isn't available anymore.

Gotta say tho, I'm an

Android advocate

when it comes to smartphone OSs.

Google has Apple beat in this arena IMHO.

Plus

I love Verizon. Better service.

Plus,

SWYPE isn't available on IPhones.

I couldn't live without SWYPE

since I'm a text crakkwhore.:laugh:

In summary I'm a Mac lover with an Android phone since my Android phone on Verizon TRUMPS an IPhone on AT&T (and Verizon).

Those of you discussing android... Go check out ios5 on the apple site, due out this fall. Ios5 brings nearly everything to the iPhone that I miss from my droid.. I'm rather excited for it..
 
started out with a powerbook 12" -- that baby was screaming for its size at that time.

Transitioned to the first macbook black. Had that for several years then last year moved up to the Macbook Air 11" - man that baby has it all; but I'm jealous with the latest update which includes the latest intel chips + a backlit keyboard(!). Macs not affordable? The MBA goes for $999, I don't think anyone can complain about the quality; I ended up maxing mine up to 4 Gb of ram. The SSD hard drive is a killer.

Had the original iphone, transitioned to the iphone 4; will probably stick with it until iphone 6, or when I renew my contract and Telstra here in Australia can give me a new iphone 🙂

Use to also run a hackintosh, Mac OSX on a generic PC, but recently upgraded to AMD, so yeah no go for now. Windows 7 is relatively stable.

I wrote Apple IIB laptop from 1991, what I meant was Apple 100. But the Apple IIB is the first computer I used, amazing. We used to write programs in 3rd grade for it that would have the computer spit out one word "APPLE" and have it run across the screen left to right, diagonal, those were the days. Would come home from school and play CASTLE WOLFENSTEIN on it at my best friends' house for HOURS!!! Anybody remember that one?

I like the fact that they finally added TEXT to the Ipad. I had to set up a Google+ account for me and the boys to all text each other across the IPad, and now they go and solve it with a new OS. Cool.

Also use a windows 7 laptop (using right now actually) and switched from iphone to android last year.

I guess I just don't care that much. They all do what they are supposed to.

Some of the Apple sheeple never cease to amaze me though. If you tell them you don't like apple or don't find it a trillion times better than a PC, they look at you like you just punched their 2 yo in the face. Confusion and anger!!!

I started on an Apple IIe, here... I've never owned another apple computer, but I do LOVE my iPhone. My school's hospital has Sprint service piped through it, so I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of the iPhone on Sprint before I start clinicals! 👍 I used to love gaming, and back then apple didn't have many ports of the better games, so I was a PC guy - although I didn't know that apple had a wolfenstein game. I will get an Apple computer for my next one, though.... there are some sexy machines in their lineup.

I built my first PC (from scratch... had an electrical engineer for a dad) in ~5th grade. LOVED Wolfenstein "3D". I remember printing out maps that I found on "The Information Network of Kansas" (start of the internets) on a wide carriage dot matrix printer. I also remember ordering an additional 2MB of RAM (for a total of 4MB) so I could play the original DOOM. :laugh: Good times... good times...

I haven't watched an episode of South Park forever... but this one held up to the prior level of awesomeness. :laugh:

Now the question is: has anybody actually ever seen "The Human Centipede"? It's available to stream on Netflix... I'm sad to say that I was one of the 127 people in the world that has actually seen it. 😱 Let's just say that the premise in that South Park episode was actually done in the movie... disturbing on many levels.

Tech geek here. Always liked apple products but never used them. Too restrictive and expensive for anyone that wants to mess with their compy. Great for non-geeks that just want something that works.

For the record, hacking competitions almost always have apple's OS hacked very early on (always first out), Windows is usually second, and Linux in various flavors lasts the longest. As already stated, most malware isn't targeted at a small market.

Apple's strength is that they make all of their own hardware, so their software does not have to accommodate 3rd parties as much. I could make a wireless card in my garage and sell it and microsoft would have to deal with any instabilities that arise from people using it. I think microsoft does a reasonable job given that situation, but that means it is definitely not the OS for everyone (it does make the hardware cheaper).

I'm not so sure. Highly successful, driven people (think Jobs or Buffett or Gates), don't generally half-ass it. They dedicate their days to a sole focus on executing their vision. The fact that he is stepping down suggests he has probably had very poor health for months, has tried his best to keep up with the demands, but has finally relented. He's not in it to provide creative direction for the company. He IS the company. He won't be satisfied attending a meeting or two a day just to tell the design team what to do.

My guess, his health is so poor he can hardly work at all. I imagine this may be part of the reason why the release of the iPhone 5 has still not been announced.

As far as product flops, every company has them. Apple's duds since Jobs returned include many more than the two you listed. AppleTV comes to mind. When you are trying to change the way people think about using products, you are bound to miss much of the time. But when you get it right, it is game-changing. Flops aside, Apple has had more winners in the last decade than any other company that comes to mind.

There has actually never been a virus for OS X (now 10 years old). I am not saying that there can't be one, but to date, there isn't one for OS X. The market share argument doesn't hold water because there were viruses that affected Mac OS 9. OS 9 had a minuscule market share compared to the current market share of OS X. I personally haven't ran antivirus software since switching to Mac 7 years ago.

That's a Trojan; not a virus. They are different. A virus is malicious software that self replicates and can spread and infect other systems without user involvement. OS X has never had a virus.
A Trojan or other malware must be manually installed by the user. That requires the user to download it and type in their password. The Trojan you mentioned is downloaded when the user clicks on the link. The launcher launches automatically but the user must still type in their password in order for it to be installed. Once installed, then it has the ability to run processes and do things that would normally require a password.
OS X is not immune to stupidity. If a person types in their admin password to install something that they are not familiar with, then they have only themselves to blame.

The Trojan you mentioned is downloaded when the user clicks on the link. The launcher launches automatically but the user must still type in their password in order for it to be installed. Once installed, then it has the ability to run processes and do things that would normally require a password.
OS X is not immune to stupidity. If a person types in their admin password to install something that they are not familiar with, then they have only themselves to blame.
