Applied/Accepted, Fall 2012!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm on the same boat, just waiting on Yale an Columbia...I'm driving myself insane by refreshing my email every 10 minutes! I have to keep reminding myself that i turned my apps in late (SOPHAS sent out my app 1/25 so It may take a while to hear back from those 2 schools).
I think I was accepted at UIC too. I checked the status of my app on their site and under decision it says "admit". I haven't received an email or mail from them though.

Haha, me too! For some reason, Sophas sent out my app a second time (a few days later) after sending out the first time, so I guess Columbia is considering the second app as the complete one...🙁

Hello, I am new to this forum. It seems great! What concentration did you apply to at UIC? And how did you find out, via mail, email, or just through the online status? I just saw "admit" on my UIC admission decision on the online status.

I got into the CHS division. Funny thing, I received an email from them to update my financial aid information which prompted me to check my status online. If you saw the word "admit" on your status page, it means you got in. I was able to fully register for my UIC ID and such.

Another funny thing, I got into the MPH online CHS track. I actually wanted to go there in-person. I wonder how this is going to work. The curriculum is entirely the same. Maybe I can just take both online and offline classes

UIC sent me an email late last night that read "UIC Financial Aid - Processing Requirement (2012-2013&#8203😉" which tipped me off to checking their website. There it said "Admit" but no formal word through email or mail thus far. I applied to the online Community Health Sciences concentration.

Cool thanks everyone. I didn't get an email or anything but it did say admit. Maybe I'll be getting an email later. Also I applied to the community health sciences division as well. 🙂

Hi Everyone,

I applied to JHSPH, Columbia and Harvard. I was accepted to JHSPH and Columbia and I got their emails within the past week!

Do you guys know when will we find out about scholarships decisions for those accepted to JHSPH and Columbia?

If we didn't hear anything from the acceptance emails, does it mean that we don't get any scholarships?

Thanks!

Didn't apply to JHSPH. It seems like their biggest scholarship is the tuition waiver of 75% in the 2nd year for their MSPH/MHS students. For Columbia, I received a letter attached to the admissions decision regarding scholarships; it was on the second page.

Hey guys, for those who got accepted to Yale, did you receive a confirmation email from the financial aid office after sending in the Yale financial aid application and FAFSA? I faxed my financial aid application to the office in January, but I just started to wonder about this. Thanks for your help ahead of time!🙂

For myself, I didn't specify a certificate because I was/am not sure which one would be the best fit (I'm interested in more than one topic), though in my letter they did say I had to make a choice during the Fall 2012 semester. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

Did you get your admissions decision through regular mail or did you check it online. There is only one page for my online acceptance letter, so if you received a two page acceptance letter online, then I suppose I didn't get any scholarship. But congratulations for you!

wait a minute guys,
is it just me or are there other people on this forum who applied to the PopFam department at Columbia who are still waiting to hear from them cos I'm starting to freak out:scared:
Someone please say something!!!

I definitely applied later than you and now I am waiting here anxiously. My application was sent out by sophas on 2/22/12 (way later than anyone here). I am going to keep my fingers crossed and hopefully I do get an acceptance somewhere :-/
still super worries and regretting applying so late :-[

has anyone heard from harvard's 42.5 credit mph for global health yet? thx. - newbie member

I checked it online. I got a merit award but what I really need is a need-based award also. I only found out recently that I was supposed to fill out FAFSA by the deadline (Feb. 1) as well as an institutional aid application (using an ID that Columbia was supposed to send). I was never notified of this and never got my ID for the institutional aid application.

I don't know if you're in the same boat. Did you fill out these financial aid materials? I'm actually kinda disgruntled because Columbia was somewhat disorganized. Two different websites for public health admissions, and the sites weren't even completely updated before the admissions process began.

Yea we're in the same boat! I also have yet to hear back from UCLA for its Community Health program and Johns Hopkins for the MSPH program in HBHE. but it'll be fine. Some schools are slower than others. Plus no news is better than bad news, as people say.

Regarding Columbia aid: i called the financial aid office Friday, and was told the institutional application isnt updated yet, but we will receive an email when it is. For now, all you can do is the Fafsa. with your merit award, can i ask how much it was? i didnt receive one and was curious how much they give out

Mine didn't have a special name attached to it, but it was $11K for each year. It really only covers about a third of the tuition. Unless I can get some need-based funding as well (there is no freakin way I can afford even one year), I'm not sure I can even pay for housing in NY. I'm planning to visit the campus, but I don't know if SMS is having a Visit Day. Thanks for the information about the financial aid situation; that's really helpful to know! I've been super worried.

do most people on this thread already have their medical degree? or are you guys MPH applicants straight out of college?

Yeah not a problem. Thanks for your info. I'm hoping for some need-based aid, otherwise it's going to be loans mostly.

do most people on this thread already have their medical degree? or are you guys MPH applicants straight out of college?

You'll see a lot of diversity in an MPH cohort (and this thread/forum), there are people right out of undergrad, those who have worked a year or several years, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, former AmeriCorps and Teach For America people, MSN/MPH students, JD/MPH students, MBA/MPH students, PA/MPH students, MD/MPH students, and many others as well as students who already have the first part of those joint degrees but who want to supplement with an MPH. There are also pharma and dental students/professionals and I'm sure a variety of people from other professions.

The average age of entry at the school I'm at is 26/27 so most people are not right out of undergrad, most schools encourage/require some experience to be accepted but some undergrad students get that through summer internships or working during school and can be very competitive applicants as well. We have some MD/MPH students as well as people who already have their MD, but it's not a majority by any means.

Point being that most on this thread probably don't have their medical degree and most probably aren't straight out of college either, you'll get both of those mixed in with a lot of other interesting backgrounds as well.

I'm straight out of college (I graduate this May), but like Awapi said, most people here come from a variety of backgrounds. I know there are a few other posters who are applying straight from undergrad too, but not many.

OMG!!!

I got a fulll scholarship and stipend to EMORY!!

Ahhhh

Thank you all! I'm just overwhelmed. This is just surreal. I found out this morning by e-mai for a merit scholarship.

Congrats Lenoch! I'm a current merit scholar at Emory, you should have a "scholar buddy" contacting you soon (who knows, might be me!), but if you don't hear from them feel free to private message and let me know if you have any questions!

I had a nice girl contact me on Saturday with any questions I had (I missed the call, will hopefully talk today). Emory just outdoes everyone else!

Congrats to those with Emroy scholarships! How exciting! What are your concentrations, if you don't mind me asking?

Their people are awesome! I always get quick and friendly replies from the coordinators and admissions, can't say the same for some other institutions (looking at you Columbia).

Congratulations Lenoch on what I think is the Woodruff Fellowship you received! I also just got a merit scholarship email from Emory, for half-tuition and fees! I was accepted to the Epi concentration.

Not as big as some of yours, but just received an email minutes ago regarding my award of a 24,000 scholarship for Emory. Too bad I already filled out my forms for visit weekend without marking Merit Scholarship recipient nor making sure I'd be around for the dinner at the dean's house, but exciting nonetheless - and my transportation will be reimbursed.

As some of you seem to be curious about stats, I'll leave it vague but still hopefully helpful that I was around a 3.7 GPA with GRE's in the 89-97 percentile in the three categories.

Also smaller than the amount most received (but awesome nonetheless), my Emory scholarship includes a 2500/semester assistantship.

Rejected: Berkeley (HPM)
Accepted: Yale (Policy), Emory (HPM), Columbia (Healthcare Management)
Waiting: Hopkins, UCLA, Harvard, Brown

Wow! Congratulations to you both! So exciting. 😀

I've been lurking on this forum for months now. I think it's about time to post something.

I'm heading down to NOLA next month to visit Tulane and then hopping over to Emory for their visit day. I'll probably decide on Emory 🙂, even if I do hear good news from Mich and Cal (which I doubt). Emory just sounds perfect for what I'm interested in. Can't wait to visit!

Applied: BU, Harvard, GW, Emory, Tulane, Mich, UW, Cal, Oregon (all Epi)
Waiting: Mich, Cal
Rejected: UW, GW, Harvard

Accepted: BU (merit scholarship), Emory, Tulane, Oregon (scholarship)

I'm doing the same, noelly! I'm planning on spending the day touring New Orelans on March 19th, then visiting Tulane on March 20th, and heading to Atlanta the next day. I'm so so excited. Researching all the things to see and eat in NOLA is way more fun than working on my thesis. Plus I can't wait to meet all these fantastically friendly Emory people I've been hearing so much about!
