I will be graduating in May without having taken my MCAT. I will not have the time and bandwidth to study and take the MCAT before then to have my app ready by the time submissions open. The earliest I'll be able to submit an app would be September, provided that my MCAT score is good enough. All other aspects of my app would be ready by that May.

GPA (3.9), EC (leadership clubs, initiatives relating to medicine, etc), volunteering (150hr by may), clinical (150hr scribing), shadowing (DO), LOR (1 DO, 1 PI, 1 med school committee) and research-wise (1000+ hr, 1 pub, various presentations), I think I will be a fairly competitive applicant for mid-range MD schools and a strong applicant for most DO schools. Obviously, I cannot speculate as to what my MCAT will be, nor can I guess how my primary and secondary responses would be percieved. However, I feel as though I will have a good shot getting into a DO school if apply "early" in the DO cycle (which I understand to be as late as November). At the same time, my chances of MD will be rather low if I apply in September due to the late app.

My desired specialties do not have MD bias. However, I am interested in research and this is reflected in my background.

If I apply in September and am accepted to a DO school, I will not turn down the A. I will go. However, If I wait until the next cycle and apply DO and MD, I'll potentially have more options to choose from with regards to personal preferences and research aspirations.

I'm aware of the extra year of attending salary and the security of just getting into med school that applying the first year could give me. I'm still torn on whether to apply all at once, or to apply DO and get into med school "early".

If you can comment on any of my thoughts or statements (which I don't assert as being reasonable or correct), it would be appreciated.

Why you think my DO application would not be ready after receiving my MCAT score? Not trying to do hypotheticals, but deciding whether or not to apply provided I get a decent score will be important to establish beforehand.

Why not just get a phd?

On the whole, you should apply when you are 100% ready. I can see that you're not ready.
I can list many reasons as to why DO/MD, but very few as to why solely PhD (PhD/MD is on the radar, but I need to mull this over some more). While I am fascinated by research, it has always been in relation to clinical applications (yes, all biomedical research is, but some more than others). I don't have the credentials to apply research to patients, nor do I wish to, so at this point in my career I am focused on conducting research to best understand its nature and applications to medicine, prior to (hopefully) becoming a physician.

Thank you for your time in responding.

Yeah I don't see why you shouldn't apply to DO next cycle. There are DO programs that offer plenty of research opportunities, some of them even have it incorporated into their curriculum, and a few that offers research dissertation. Just got to do your due diligence with researching programs that offer those.

You can look up DO/PhD programs (I have a pending written interview with the MSUCOM folks about theirs). Some DO programs welcome student research, and as a DO student, you are still eligible for student research opportunities at NIH as far as I know. Take an NIH IRTA if you want to build that part of your profile and decide for yourself regarding MD/PhD, PhD, etc. Do not rush your MCAT prep if you don't have the time to schedule your study time or gather solid resources. With a 3.9 GPA, a well-crafted and supported application will get you far (get your non-clinical volunteering in at least... more clinical experience will help you too).

Talk to the folks in the Research Scientists subforum where most of the MD/PhDs hang out.
