So what really does it mean to apply early. Everyone says apply early and you'll have a great shot, blah blah blah. When is someone applying early? Is it on the first day? the first month? What do you guys think?

The sooner the better - like now. Most d schools start reviewing applications in september so you want to make sure you get EVERYTHING in before then.

When people say early, they mean as soon as possible during the application cycle. The application cycle started last month. Therefore, the sooner you get your application completed and ALL documents to AADSAS or TMDSAS, then the sooner you will get an interview. As long as you get your application in early enough to have your interview by mid-November, then you have a chance to make the first round of selections that are sent out on Dec. 1. Because I slacked off in getting my LORs put together before my alma mater got out for the semester, I had to wait until after the summer was over (AUG) until I could get my LORs written. My application was finished late AUG or early SEP. I recieved all interviews by Nov. 14 and received all my acceptances in the Dec. 1 round including the school I interviewed on Nov. 14.

Some professors may likely screw up your entire application process by not sending in LOR in time. Get one or more LORs from different advisors as back up to mitigate this unnecessary wait just in case.

I agree. I asked a physics professor to write me a letter of rec in winter 2006 and he JUST turned it in! And it's not like he forgot about it since I reminded him nicely every month...
