Hello,

Can you apply to two or even all three branches for HPSP?

I've been given a lot of different answer from a lot of informed people. (If any of you are reading this, I fully respect your opinions, but I just want to get some other input)

It seems you technically can, but should try to avoid it. Is that the right assessment of the situation?

Thanks

After I got waitlisted by the AF, I went on to put my application in with the Navy. So the answer is yes. They don't like it, but there's nothing stopping you from doing it.

Do it, definitely. In my case, I applied 4yr HPSP AF in September, but in October, I sensed they already filled up the space (they were using matrix back then), so I applied Army in December. I had my application packet transferred directly from AF to Army and submitted for the board in less than 2 weeks. I was then commissioned a month later.

I've heard that they time the boards specifically so people can sort of work their way through if they don't get Air Force, or Navy, etc.

I think AF boards are first, Navy is second, and Army is last. So if you want Air Force, you can apply and still have time to hop over to the Navy or Army if you don't get it. This is NOT to say that the best applicants will apply for Air Force, 2nd best applicants apply for Navy, etc. I believe it works that the AF has the fewest scholarships so they get their pick first. I'm not trying to imply that one branch is superior by saying what I said because each person has to decide where they will fit best, but I've heard that this pattern exists partially so people what want the HPSP any way they can get it don't have to be "stuck" applying for just one spot in one branch or bust.

You can, but let the recruiters know up front. Remember if you make them mad, they are the ones pushing your packet through. They will know whether you are or not when they go to get your physical - they will see which service you did it with.

If you apply with one and get wait listed and decide to apply with another, the other service may have to release you or your paperwork for the other service before they can push you through.

I applied to all 3 when I was in school. Army and Air Force offered me 2-year HPSP, Navy gave me a 3-year and better uniforms.

I gave the Army recruiter my Air Force application in lieu of filling out a 2nd app. No problems at all.

Sorry to be dense, but is the general advice:
-Apply to one branch, if you don't get it, move on to the next?

Or should you apply simultaneously to multiple branches?

(Albeit cliche) I would love to get the AF, but I know it's competitive. If I don't get AF, I would be more than happy to do Navy or Army. So I don't want to jeopardize my chances with the AF, but I also want to position myself so that I have the best shot to get the HPSP.

SINCERE THANKS for any input!

Your choice. The main thing to realize is that if you don't get in one of the first groups of Army applicants (January/February - which means applications are submitted Dec/Jan), your chances begin to drop dramatically. So if you can apply with 1 branch well before the cut off dates of the other - go for it.
