Is it possible to direct commission into the Navy or Air Force? I have several years of experience. When I first graduated from school, I was looking into direct accession with the Navy, but they were overmanned at the time. Is this still the case or are there openings these days?

You can still do this, if there are spots.

Navy General dentistry is overmanned at 105% last time I checked though.

If you're an oral surgeon, you're in high demand.

Thanks! By overmanned at 105%, does this mean that there are no spots open for general dentists? Or do they still accept applications despite being overmanned?

that, I am unsure of. You'd have to talk to a recruiter.

things change, every year people separate/retire while new people come in to fill those spots, mostly HPSP students.

Being a Navy dentist is nothing like being a regular dentist.

You're an officer first:

That means doing lots of military stuff and likely deploying/moving overseas/living somewhere you dont want to be.

You are not free; you can't take vacation whenever you want. You are on the military's timecard till you leave or get kicked out.

Do you place lots of implants and fixed pros in private practice? Cool. You cant do this as general dentist in the Navy. Navy dentistry is all about exams and fillings.

If you still want to join, then by all means go for it but being a Navy dentist is more than a "job". You should know what youre getting into. If you're in this purely for the financial benefit, you/re making a huge mistake.

I am interested in joining the reserves

right now i think air force is hiring as of a few months ago

Yes it’s possible. I was recently selected for a general dentist position with the navy. There was 1 other general dentist that was selected during the July cycle for direct accession. Feel free to ask me anything regarding the process. Currently waiting to commission. They also added a 150k sign on bonus for fy24 so there must be a shortage of general dentists atm..

Is it a 4 year obligation? And are you coming in as a LCDR?

If you accept the sign on bonus, then it is a 4 year obligation. I think it’s very rare to come in as a LCDR for general dentists. I am coming in as an LT but they counted my year in practice and counted it towards my official date of rank

So you’re coming in as O3>5?

The chance to obtain a direct commission as a dentist varies year to year. This year the Air Force is looking for a number of direct accessions to start summer 2024. Any specialist and even general dentists are being interviewed. If interested, please contact an Air Force health professions recruiter. Dentist - Requirements and Benefits - U.S. Air Force

Every 2 years in private practice counts as 1 year time in grade. So if you worked private practice for 14 years you could come in as an O4 as opposed to an O3.

There are many reasons why someone would want to join military, or someone would be against it. Pros and cons to both military and civilian dentistry. Just make sure to do your research and decide which fits your personality and your lifestyle more.

Looking at all of your previous posts and comments on other threads, it seems like all you do is troll people who have the slightest interest in the military and have nothing but bad things to say about it. Just as you joined for whatever reason you deemed good at the time, everyone has their own reasons. This forum really isn’t the place for that type of negativity, reddit seems more appropriate for you. I get it, you had a terrible experience in the military but not everyone had a bad experience like you. But SDN isn’t like reddit, it’s a community of doctors and aspiring doctors who actually want factual information, not a personal narrative anecdote which appears to have the same motive behind it, basically to talk crap; so it would be best if it’s kept more positive than commenting on every post with your negative attitude that seems pretty apparent across all of your contributions to this forum. If anyone has any serious questions about the process, feel free to dm me. Good luck.

I would love to figure this out. My luck would be that it's probably not possible until ADSO has been completed.
