Hi guys, I am wondering what my chances are for the next cycle if I apply June 1st but won't take the DAT until late July/Early August.

I am currently at 3.64cGPA/sGPA (4.0 last two quarters, 4.0 currently this quarter). I have 150 hours of shadowing a general practitioner. I have roughly 75 hours of volunteering at my local animal shelter. I have one quarter of biology research. I am in two of my university's dental clubs.

Will applying that late really hurt my chances of getting in next cycle (assuming I get at least 19 averages)?

with those stats you should get an interview before Dec 1st,you have good grades and have a good core of EC. Do well on the DAT and you will be fine.

Based on your GPA alone, I would say you have a good chance.

To answer this question, you gotta put yourself in the adcoms mind.
In June, there maybe 100 applications to read, its easy for an adcom to choose whom he would like to interview.
In August, 100 --> 1000+. If you are an adcom, how can you choose which one to interview? The applicants all look the same to you on papers. You have to be more picky with the interview invites etc...

At the end of the day, its your call. Apply as early as you can and pray.

wizi is right, the earlier u apply with all ur stuff the better, I applied the first day too but only took my DAT around mid july , ..did that hurt me? I dont think so but it would have been better if they had all of my info right away. I had friends who also took their DAT in July/ august and both got interviews before Dec 1st.

Apply as early as possible, I applied early September and I know certain schools ignored me because of that and the fact that my GPA was lower than yours. With a 3.6 GPA you're fine to apply in early August. Just make sure to nail the DAT.

So say hypothetically that I take the DAT at the beginning of August. How long will it take for my application to be fully completed ( assuming it was only missing the DAT scores)?

DAT scores take about 2 weeks to process. So I would say you would be ok mid or late August.

Def apply early as possible, it takes a long time for the application to process. Good luck

It only takes 2 weeks to process the DAT score and then you're complete. Assuming that you submit your app before you take the DAT, it takes 2 to 3 weeks to process the grades, transcripts, LORs, etc.

So if I send in my LOR's and transcripts and grades before I take the DAT, my application should be finished by around mid-August. Do you guys think that I stand a good chance at netting some interviews and possibly a Dec 1st acceptance?

If everything is submitted prior to your DAT date (and get a 19+ on all sections) and you take the DAT in early August, then yes, I think you will stand a good chance for interviews and an acceptance on Dec 1st. Apply to as many dental schools you are truly interested in. Dental schools can be unpredictable but it seems like you have a very good shot. Good luck 🙂

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. I really appreciate it.

Hey guys, sorry for asking the same question over and over but do you guys think that applying that late (August) will be a big issue for netting pre dec interviews? I was planning to study for the DAT the day after I take my last final of spring quarter. Should I go with that plan or just take only 1 science class spring quarter + 2 music and study for the DAT and try to take it before June? I was originally planning to rock my final spring quarter with two upper div sciences before I send in my application so that I could have a total of 4 quarters of straight 4.0 and then focus 100% on the DAT and rock it as well.

I would prefer to have no classes to worry about so that I could study full time for the DAT but I will do whatever it takes to at least get into 1 DS this cycle.

Thank you!

It is best to take the DAT as early as possible but I would also be careful and try to take it when you have no other classes. I spent almost 8 hours a day for the exam and I took it in late August. I still had a ton of pre december interviews. If you feel you can manage studying for DAT and taking classes at the same time then you can try to do that. If you're scared that you cant handle both its ok to wait.

Yeah, I would definitely treat studying the DAT like a full time job. I wouldn't want to be absorbing other material along with DAT stuff. I submitted aadsas application early September and got in 12/1 so early august is definitely fine.
