Is it worth it? The only research-oriented (publics) schools I am thinking about applying to are VCU, UMB, and maybe UCSF with UConn. My GPA is low right now but I think by the time I apply I will have ~3.25-3.3, maybe 3.4 after academic update in Jan 2010.

At my VCU interview they said they were not heavy into research, and they did not even do a presentation about research at their school. That said, I applied with not even one minute of research. I got in at both VCU and UCSF and was offered an interview at UMB that I didn't attend. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine. Just be awesome in other ways.
