Hi! I need some advice on applying.

I currently have a 3.4 cgpa and a 3.3 sgpa and a 31 MCAT. I'm planning on applying to the lowest tier med schools and I'll be in an americorps program all year.

My problem is that I'm retaking the MCAT august 4th. I thought I could take it earlier but there's a lot of content and I still need to keep studying. I'm retaking because my advisor told me that the new MCAT would make a app more favorable and that a couple of schools will prefer it over the old MCAT.

My question is how do I go about applying? Should I just apply to lower tier med schools and if my score is higher, apply to other medical schools? Would it be too late at that point?

The DO cycle is longer, and so even an app submitted by Nov is not too late.

Your intention of going into AmeriCorps is very admirable. Your MCAT score is competitive and the problem is the GPA, not the MCAT.

If you're boning for the MD degree, I agree 100% with my learned colleague gonnif that it is best to apply when you have the best possible app, even if it means skipping an app cycle.

No, I think that this person is saying it is too late in the current cycle. Wait until next June and spend the coming year really working on a higher MCAT or maybe look at an alternate route-- check out the post Bac program at places like VCOM for example. Then you can skip retaking the MCAT if you get into that...

My recommendation letters haven't even come in yet? How could it be too late?

Applying now with a 31 would be far better than applying after Labor Day with whatever your new MCAT might be

Right that's what I was asking. So I should apply now to the schools I can, and if the score is better, I can apply to other schools after?

Don't plan on applying to any schools this year with the MCAT score from August. You won't get that score until September, so you wouldn't be able to add any schools based on the new MCAT score until September. Your GPA is not stellar, so you need the added advantage of applying preferably early, but at least around the time the average applicant is applying. Submitting your primary application to a school in September is late. If you add any schools that late, you probably won't be complete (with your secondary and every other piece of the application that is necessary) until late September or early October. By this point, a significant number of the interview spots are taken, and the schools will start being a whole lot more selective as they allocate the remaining interview seats.
